Historically osteoporosis has been treated by surgical
intervention, however, with the increased awareness of the role of
oestrogen in bone loss during the menopause and the availability of
hormone replacement therapy, the treatment strategy has become one
of prevention. The shift in understanding of the disease as well as
the availability of new treatments has meant that gynaecologists
and endocrinologists together with rheumatologists are now involved
in the diagnosis of osteoporosis. This has created a need for not
only a clear definition of osteoporosis, but also a comprehensive
reference on the disease. This book is aimed to combat low
understanding of epidemiology of the disease among clinicians.
