This work develops a parallelist theory of word formation based on the notion of paradigmatic identity. Words related by morphology may be phonologically similar, beyond what is expected on the basis of their standard constituents, and achieving this similarity can lead to phonotactic violations. The standard generative analysis is that word formation is (sometimes) "cyclic", so the one word functions as an intermediate stage in the derivation of another. This allows phonology derived early to be preserved by a later cycle, producing surface violations of phonotactic constraints. The alternative theory elaborated here is that identity between related words is enforced directly by the grammar. "Cyclic effects" results when paradigmatic identity takes precedence over phonotactic restrictions. It is purposed that morphological derivation is mirrored by a phonological relation between the derived word and its base and that ranked and violable Optimality Theoretic constraints demand identity of these word pairs. Following an elaboration of the theoretical framework, case studies are presented to show how paradigmatic faithfulness can supersede phonotactics and force related words to be identical in featural content or prosodic organization. This study will be of particular interest to linguist working in phonology, morphology, and the interface between the two components.
