The closest thing to a jazz piano "Bible" out there

Wed, 12 Oct 2016 | Review by: Cal H.

This book only has the most basic of prerequisites (ability to read music, knowledge of major and minor triads, and the circle of fifths), but contains all of the practical and theoretical knowledge to take your playing to a very high level. Everything is covered from the basic modes and voicings all the way through to quartal harmony, upper structures, etc. but at no point does anything feel too overwhelming, as new concepts are introduced slowly and each chapter builds on the knowledge and skill acquired in the last. Practicing with no other material except this book (and maybe a good "Fake Book") for an hour a day will take you from a novice level to a point where you can play gigs within about a year or so. Whether you're a pianist with only a passing interest in jazz, or whether you want to be the next Art Tatum, this book is as essential to your library as Hanon, as it contains a wealth of musical and historical knowledge.
