A collection of original articles by well-known feminists first
presented at the 1989 Conference of the British Sociological
Association. The collection makes a major contribution to our
understanding of the ways in which men control and subordinate
women in the domestic and the public sphere. The contributors
report on original research that demonstrates the ways in which men
exercise control over girls and women in their daily lives, in the
home, at school, at work and in the courts. Women are seen to
resent and challenge male power, but, the institutionalization of
male power is shown to mitigate against women taking control over
their own lives.
