William the Conqueror may have triumphed at Hastings but he still had many battles to fight against the hostile English before he could finally stamp his authority on the land. Resistance fighters harried the Normans, sought alliances with the Scots and Danes, and generally did all they could to make William wish he had never crossed the Channel. Retired history teacher Peter Rex shows in a scholarly but readable way that William stamped down on the rebels with ruthless brutality, but five years were to pass before he could feel secure. Rex draws parallels between those long-ago English fighters and the French Resistance nearly 900 years later. Both were engaged in hit-and-run warfare against a mighty enemy and both were rooted out by the invaders and their quislings. This is an aspect of the Norman conquest that is often overlooked, but it shows that the English have never been an easily-defeated people. (Kirkus UK)
In 1066 the English were conquered by the infamous invader, William the Conqueror. However this is not the whole story--the English did not roll over and die before their suppressors; far from it. Peter Rex brings to life the resistance, from those who allied themselves with the new regime to those who went "underground" to subvert it such as Hereward the Wake and Edric the Wild. He examines William's pacification attempts, alongside his notorious "harrying" of the north.
