Antioxidants have been touted as being so-called "anti-aging"
agents and many aggressive sales campaigns have been based on this
false premise. However, clear scientific evidence that antioxidants
can inhibit or delay aging is lacking. Nutritional and genetic
interventions to boost antioxidants have failed to increase the
life span of man. Correlations between antioxidant levels and rate
of aging are inconsistent and non-supportive. Questions remain as
to any role for antioxidants in delaying the aging process.
Actually, the theory upon which the antioxidants were studied was
the free radical theory of aging and/or the mitochondrial theory of
aging, both of which have been invalidated due to a lack of
reproducibility in scientific studies. Even worse, there is growing
evidence that excessive antioxidant overloading can cause
significant harm. Rest assured, the quest for healthy aging has
been fraught with outlandish scams and money-making schemes. In
fact, antioxidants have been shown to increase the risk of
age-associated diseases, such as cancer, heart disease, strokes and
overall mortality. Moreover, the free radical theory fails to
explain the well recognized, healthful benefits of exercise. Still,
sales of anti-aging agents continue to sky rocket. People want a
quick fix to aging or a "youth miracle pill" but such conjured-up
remedies do not exist. In short, there is no antioxidant "fountain
of youth." Moreover, antioxidant overkill likely interferes with
crucial prooxidant protection against pathogens (infections) and
cancer development. Additionally, antioxidant stacking can lead to
chronic fatigue and tiredness. Avoid being duped by clever
advertisers. Keep your money. Protect your health. Be safe and age
gracefully and happily.
