The Irish philosopher Edmund Burke described Spain as 'a great whale stranded on the shores of Europe', and it has always seemed slightly apart from the rest of the continent; partly because of the Islamic period that split it apart long ago, then because of the north/south divide and the social diversity that embraces both the dreadfully poor Castilian peasantry and the rich landowners of Andalusia and Extremadura. Writing a comprehensive and coherent history is such a difficult task that it may be that the publishers are right in supposing that the best way forward is to commission not one, but nine different writers from six different universities to deal with different aspects of the country. Although the book lacks homogeneity, each section is admirably definitive within its own terms (while naturally the styles are individual). The section on the Christian re-conquest which ended in 1492 is especially good, while Sebastian Balfour is particularly even-handed in his examination of the years between 1931 and the present day. Not perhaps an 'entertaining' book, but one which anyone interested in Spain and its history can't possibly ignore. (Kirkus UK)
From Roman times to the present day, Spain has occupied a significant role in the evolution of our Western world. In this one volume, under the editorship of Sir Raymond Carr, leading scholars present an overview of the political, economic, social, and intellectual factors which have shaped Spanish history over the last two thousand years.
