The Life and Death of Mahatma Gandhi (Hardcover, New edition)

Payne piles trifle upon tidbit with respect to Gandhi's twenty-eight years abroad, his relations with his wife and sons, his death, funeral, and the assassins' fate.... Then there were his meetings with Mussolini and Charlie Chaplin, and his (quite revealing) thoughts on life insurance. Payne has less of substance to report about Gandhi's dealings with the British or other Indian leaders. In its treatment of his socio-economic outlook, the book is excelled by even a mediocre study like Moon's Gandhi and Modern India (1969). And it never approaches the level of Ashe's Gandhi: A Study in Revolution (1968) illuminating his religious views and temperament. Payne fails to make us understand how Gandhi ever achieved such power, partly because he neglects to describe colonial India itself. Moreover, his comments about Gandhi's character are Surpassingly sloppy. He drops the thread of Gandhi's preoccupation with "courage"; he dwells tiresomely on the anti-sexual theme without reaching any conclusions. He contradicts himself, showing how Gandhi took sides, to say the least, in three wars, yet invoking his unqualified non-violent stand; he dwells on Gandhi's concern for demonstrations without casualties, then attributes "a characteristic indifference to the consequences of his action." The book is very long, and one wonders whether most readers wouldn't do better to devote the time to Gandhi's own voluminous works plus a shorter, sharper biography. (Kirkus Reviews)
