England in modern times has always been a class-conscious society, but never more so than when democracy and the rise of working-class politics has threatened to overwhelm the social position of the middle and upper classes. This study of England in the first half of the 'real' 20th century shows just how deeply class consciousness - expressed as working-class militancy and assertiveness and middle-class attempts to maintain social distance - suffused every aspect of society between the wars and also in the period of 'war socialism' between 1942 and 1951. The language and imagery of class, the author claims, was present not only in how people defined their social position but also in the way they thought about education, religion, sexuality, sport and entertainment. A powerfully argued book, documented in fascinating detail. (Kirkus UK)
Ross McKibbin investigates the ways in which 'class culture' characterized English society and intruded into every aspect of life during the period from 1918 to the mid-1950s. He demonstrates the influence of social class within the mini cultures which together constitute society: families and family life, friends and neighbours, the workplace, schools and colleges, religion, sexuality, sport, music, film, radio; and examines how increasing Americanization affected these cultures.
