This study of Yasunari Kawabata, Japan's first Nobel laureate for
literature and the most widely known for his novels Snow Country
(1960) and Sound of the Mountain (1970), aims both to reinforce the
extraordinary phenomenon of scholarly neglect of one of Japan's
20th-century, though highly controversial, literary giants and to
demonstrate the fact that Kawabata's ultimate recognition in the
West is entirely warranted.
