A reissue of a comic and tragic play that asks just how much of our
life we could—or would—change if we got another chance. In this
play by Swiss playwright and novelist Max Frisch, a middle-aged
behavioral researcher Kürmann is given the opportunity to start
his life over at any point he chooses and change his decisions and
actions in matters both serious and mundane—He could save his
marriage, become politically active, take better care of his
health, or even change the color of his living room furniture.
Despite his intention to apply the wisdom he has acquired with age,
Kürmann finds himself inexorably trapped in the same decisions.
Ultimately proving fatal, Kürmann’s life game interrogates how
much of our own path is shaped by seemingly random factors and how
much is in fact predetermined by our own limited, conditioned
selves. The play’s central idea—that our lives are nothing but
a self-conscious play with imaginary identities—is brilliantly
captured in Biography’s dramaturgical form, setting up a theatre
rehearsal as the metaphor for the endless possibilities and
variables of the game of life. Frisch’s own revised, dramatically
heightened version of his play celebrates not only the theatre as a
form of self-expression but also the human condition in all its
potential and limitations as it showcases both comic and tragic
outcomes that define all our lives.
In Shakespeare's Medieval Craft, Kurt A. Schreyer explores the
relationship between Shakespeare s plays and a tradition of late
medieval English biblical drama known as mystery plays. Scholars of
English theater have long debated Shakespeare s connection to the
mystery play tradition, but Schreyer provides new perspective on
the subject by focusing on the Chester Banns, a sixteenth-century
proclamation announcing the annual performance of that city s cycle
of mystery plays. Through close study of the Banns, Schreyer
demonstrates the central importance of medieval stage objects as
vital and direct agents and not merely as precursors to the
Shakespearean stage.
As Schreyer shows, the Chester Banns serve as a paradigm for how
Shakespeare s theater might have reflected on and incorporated the
mystery play tradition, yet distinguished itself from it. For
instance, he demonstrates that certain material features of
Shakespeare s stage including the ass s head of A Midsummer Night s
Dream, the theatrical space of Purgatory in Hamlet, and the
knocking at the gate in the Porter scene of Macbeth were in fact
remnants of the earlier mysteries transformed to meet the
exigencies of the commercial London playhouses. Schreyer argues
that the ongoing agency of supposedly superseded theatrical objects
and practices reveal how the mystery plays shaped dramatic
production long after their demise. At the same time, these
medieval traditions help to reposition Shakespeare as more than a
writer of plays; he was a play-wright, a dramatic artisan who
forged new theatrical works by fitting poetry to the material
remnants of an older dramatic tradition."
This volume contains papers presented at the Fourth International
Altschul Sympo- sium, held June 27-29, 1996, at the University of
Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Saskatche- wan, Canada. The Altschul
Symposia Series are held in memory of Rudolf Altschul, a graduate
of the University of Prague and a pioneer in the fields of vascular
and nervous system biology. Dr. Altschul was head of the Department
of Anatomy at the University of Saskatchewan from 1955 to 1963. The
Altschul Symposia are made possible by an endow- ment left by Anni
Altschul, Dr. Altschul's wife, and by other contributions given by
the sponsors listed at the end of this Preface. The objective of
the Fourth Altschul Symposium, entitled Cell Biologv and Pathol-
ogv of Myelin: Evolving Biological Concepts and Therapeutic
Approaches, was to facili- tate the transfer of ideas on the
biology and pathology of myelin from the research laboratory to the
clinic by providing a forum for discussing the evolving biological
con- cepts regarding myelin function in health and disease.
In the last decade, there has been a burgeoning of activity in
the design and implementation of algorithms for algebraic geometric
computation. The workshop on Algorithms in Algebraic Geometry that
was held in the framework of the IMA Annual Program Year in
Applications of Algebraic Geometry by the Institute for Mathematics
and Its Applications on September 2006 is one tangible indication
of the interest. This volume of articles captures some of the
spirit of the IMA workshop.

Without an introduction, this volume of 19 papers plunges right
into the subject matter presented at the June 1998 symposium held
at Bayreuth U. in Bayreuth, Germany. A sampling of topics:
almost-lines and quasi-lines on projective manifolds, the
classification of K3 surfaces with nine cusps, simply connected
Godeaux surfaces, Kahlerian structures on symplectic reductions,
and A geometric proof of Ax' theorem. One paper is in untranslated
French. Includes an essay on Michael Schneider's scientific work
with a publications list (including his still standard reference on
vector bundles on projective spaces); a photograph and "alpine"
vita of Schneider (who died while sports-climbing in 1997); a list
of the eight symposium lectures; and a listing of the authors and
participants with contact information. Lacks an index.
The Bayreuth meeting on "Complex Algebraic Varieties" focussed on
the classification of algebraic varieties and topics such as vector
bundles, Hodge theory and hermitian differential geometry. Most of
the articles in this volume are closely related to talks given at
the conference: all are original, fully refereed research articles.

Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials in Construction (COST
Action NORM4Building) discusses the depletion of energy resources
and raw materials and its huge impact not only on the building
market, but also in the development of new synthetic building
materials, whereby the reuse of various (waste) residue streams
becomes a necessity. It is based on the outcome of COST Action TU
1301, where scientists, regulators, and representatives from
industry have come together to present new findings, sharing
knowledge, experiences, and technologies to stimulate research on
the reuse of residues containing enhanced concentrates of natural
radionuclides (NORM) in tailor-made building materials. Chapters
address legislative issues, measurement, and assessment of building
materials, physical and chemical aspects, from raw materials, to
residues with enhanced concentrations of natural radionuclides
(NORM), processes, building products containing NORM, and
end-of-life and reuse requirements.
Two Austrian-born designers have left their indelible mark on
California's residential architecture of the 1930s to 1960s:
Richard Neutra (1892-1970) and Rudolph M. Schindler (1887-1953)
combined modern form and inventive construction with new materials
to create a truly modern vision of living that remains
inspirational to the present day. This new book features twenty
famous and lesser known houses from that period, designed by the
two pioneers and other architects that were influenced by Neutra's
and Schindler's ideas. All are marked by highly economical use and
outstanding quality of space, a minimalist aesthetic, and by their
ideal adaption to climatic conditions. They are monuments of a
period as well as timeless models for contemporary and future
architecture. The images by photographer David Schreyer show the
buildings in their present state as a commodity of highest quality
that can be, and should be, altered to meet today's changed demands
to a living space. Andreas Nierhaus's texts, based on interviews,
explore the relationship of the present inhabitants to their homes
and what they mean to them. Together, the authors offer uniquely
intimate insights into a sophisticated way of life still too little
known outside California.
The Internet is a vast smorgasbord of information for human
resource professionals. However, many become overwhelmed with so
many Web sites proclaiming to be 'the best'. Here's the book that
cuts through the hype and provides assistance in locating some of
the best online resources. The HR field runs at a hectic pace, and
often clear, precise, and up-to-date answers are needed on a
moment's notice. Professionals must be able to quickly find the
most accurate data available online, without getting lost in the
abyss of materials available. They need to know where o find
different recruiting services, legal information, tips on salary
administration, and more.
The signs on the road to the new economy point to an all-out war
for talent. Organisations increasingly encounter difficulties in
recruiting and retaining top talent because they have yet to deal
with today's most critical human resource issues. To remain
competitive, you must create a talent powered company consisting of
highly motivated, skilled, and loyal employees. That's the central
message in this book. Two of America's leading recruitment
specialists cut through the clutter and confusion as they identify
the key human resource strategies for creating a talent powered
company. Focusing on five competencies for predicting success, they
dispel numerous myths and specify what HR professionals and hiring
managers need to do in order to energise their human resources and
productivity. They provide a critical examination of the latest in
effective recruitment methods, from the use of Internet recruiting
to developing employee referral programs.

This screenplay by Swiss playwright and novelist Max Frisch was
developed from an episode in his 1964 novel Gantenbein, or A
Wilderness of Mirrors. At the center of both works is Theo
Ehrismann, a man who cannot seem to change his life no matter how
many times he resolves to do so. Chance comes to Theo one day upon
returning from a trip abroad-he arrives home to read his own
obituary in the paper. He shows up just on time for his own funeral
and observes the attending mourners, and yet he is not able to
reveal himself to them, and especially not to his wife. "How does
one say that he is alive," wonders Theo. Life, as Frisch said, "is
the sum of events that happen by chance, and it always could as
well have turned out differently; there is not a single action or
omission that does not allow for variables in the future." Zurich
Transit presents Frisch at the height of his dramatic powers and
exemplifies his ardent believe in a dramaturgy of coincidence
rather than causality.
kraft- schlussig verbunden, also gespannt, z. B. DrehmeiBel,
Bohrer, Senker, Fraser, HobelmeiBel, StoBmeiBel und
Schleifscheiben. Zudem kenl).- zeichnet die Benennung
Werkzeugspanner folgerichtig und sinnfallig die ZugehOrigkeit
dieser Fertigungsmittel zur Gruppe der Spannzeuge. Fur
Betriebes wurden folgende Be- nennungen verwendet: DrehmeiBel,
BohrmeiBel usw. anstatt Drehstahl, Bohrstahl usw.; Drehmaschine
anstatt Drehbank; Tiefbohrmaschine an- statt Tieflochbohrmaschine;
Sackbohrung anstatt Sackloch.
kommentierte Einfuhrungsliteratur, Fachzeitschriften,
Internet-Adressen). Im Anhang werden die wichtigsten Begriffe in
einem Glossar zusammengestellt. Ein Sach- und Personenregister
sowie ein ausfuhrliches allgemeines Literaturverzeichnis runden das
Werk ab.
