A proper grasp of the law of insolvency can be acquired only by reading and digesting a sizeable volume of case law. This text, designed to complement Hockly's Insolvency Law, allows students and practitioners to come to terms with a broad range of insolvency cases.
Anselm of Canterbury (1033-1109 CE), in his work Proslogion, originated the "ontological argument" for God's existence, famously arguing that "something than which nothing greater can be conceived," which he identifies with God, must actually exist, for otherwise something greater could indeed be conceived. Some commentators have claimed that although Anselm may not have been conscious of the fact, the Proslogion as well as his Reply to Gaunilo contains passages that constitute a second independent proof: a "modal ontological argument" that concerns the supposed logical necessity of God's existence. Other commentators disagree, countering that the alleged second argument does not stand on its own but presupposes the conclusion of the first. Anselm's Other Argument stakes an original claim in this debate, and takes it further. There is a second a priori argument in Anselm (specifically in the Reply), A. D. Smith contends, but it is not the modal argument past scholars have identified. This second argument surfaces in a number of forms, though always turning on certain deep, interrelated metaphysical issues. It is this form of argument that in fact underlies several of the passages which have been misconstrued as statements of the modal argument. In a book that combines historical research with rigorous philosophical analysis, Smith discusses this argument in detail, finally defending a modification of it that is implicit in Anselm. This "other argument" bears a striking resemblance to one that Duns Scotus would later employ.
For the last two centuries, nationalism has been a central feature of society and politics. Few ideologies can match its power and resonance, and no other political movement and symbolic language has such worldwide appeal and resilience. But nationalism is also a form of public culture and political religion, which draws on much older cultural and symbolic forms. Seeking to do justice to these different facets of nationalism, the second edition of this popular and respected overview has been revised and updated with contemporary developments and the latest scholarly work. It aims to provide a concise and accessible introduction to the core concepts and varieties of nationalist ideology; a clear analysis of the major competing paradigms and theories of nations and nationalism; a critical account of the often opposed histories and periodization of the nation and nationalism; and an assessment of the prospects of nationalism and its continued global power and persistence. Broad and comparative in scope, the book is strongly interdisciplinary, drawing on ideas and insights from history, political science, sociology and anthropology. The focus is theoretical, but it also includes a fresh examination of some of the main historical and contemporary empirical contributions to the literature on the subject. It will continue to be an invaluable resource for students of nationalism across the social sciences.
This report contains the results of a study undertaken by Associated Nuclear Services (ANS) for the Directorate General of Employment, Social Affairs and Education of the Commission of the European Communities (CEC). This study was entitled "Dynamics of Selected Toxic Materials in Man." vii 2 Summary This report presents results from the second phase of a study on the metabolism of selected actual and potential human carcin ogens. In the first phase of this work a comprehensive review of literature relating to the metabolism of these materials was under taken and pharmacokinetic models were proposed to represent that meta bolism. It was suggested that these models, and the reviews on which they were based, would provide information relevant to the development of monitoring programmes and in the interpretation of dose-response data. In the second phase of the study, attention has been concen trated on the implementation of the models proposed for the various substances reviewed, i.e. arsenic, beryllium, cadmium, lead, nickel, chromium, asbestos, benzene, vinyl chloride monomer, benzidine and its congeners, carbon tetrachloride and methyl iodide. However, this programme has been supplemented by an on-going review of the relevant literature on these substances and a detailed analysis of the applica bili ty of the pharmacokinetic models used for the organs of intake, i.e. the lung and gastrointestinal tract."
These volumes present the results of two studies undertaken for the Directorate General of Employment, Social Affairs and Education of the Commission of the European Communities. The aim was to review available data concerning the metabolism of a selection of toxic chemi cals in man and to develop mathematical models representing this meta bolism. Volume 1 is the report from the first study and presents re views of the data for each of the substances and proposes models for their metabolic behaviour. Volume 2 is the report of the second study and contains a review of new data relevant to the development of meta bolic models for each substance. The modelling of uptake and retention by the two major routes of uptake (the respiratory system and the gas trointestinal tract) is also reviewed. The implementation of the models in a computer code is described and results are presented illus trating organ concentrations and rates of excretion for typical regimes of exposure. vi 1 Foreword This report contains the results of a study undertaken by Associated Nuclear Services (ANS) for the Directorate General of Employment, Social Affairs and Education of the Commission of the European Communities (CEC). In a major contribution to the theory of perception, A. D. Smith presents a truly original defense of direct realism--the view that in perception we are directly aware of things in the physical world. "The Problem of Perception" offers two arguments against direct realism--one concerning illusion, and one concerning hallucination--that no current theory of perception can adequately rebut. Smith then develops a theory of perception that does succeed in answering these arguments; and because these arguments are the only two that present direct realism with serious problems arising from the nature of perception, direct realism emerges here for the first time as an ultimately tenable position within the philosophy of perception. At the heart of Smith's theory is a new way of drawing the distinction between perception and sensation, along with an unusual treatment of the nature of objects of hallucination. With in-depth reference to both the analytical and the phenomenological literature on perception, and with telling criticism of alternative views, Smith's groundbreaking work will be of value to philosophers of perception in both the analytical and the phenomenological tradition, as well as to psychologists of perception.

I am A. D. Smith, an auth-I'm sorry but I cannot disclose this information. I've taken a major chance in just revealing my name. They may be watching. They could be anywhere, even as you read this. But I must tell the story as it was told to me. Now would you believe... There are those among us who are not as they appear. Demons walk this earth as mortal men. They are persuading many to join their uprising. The Persuaded have infiltrated every sector of society. Doctors, lawyers, politicians. They all wear the Shadow, and they bear the Mark. But every few generations, God chooses Three to assist Him in battle. Some even say Jesus' inner circle-Peter, James, and John-were the first. The Three are bestowed extraordinary powers beyond belief. The power to See, the power to Hear, the power to Heal, and the power to Fight. They are The Assigned. Tre Turner, Zeek Myers, and Gloria Torres are three young strangers from completely different walks of life until sickness, death, and family secrets find a way to unite them. Their lives are turned upside down as they deal with personal calamity, burgeoning relationships, as well as their newfound Gifts. Will this new Three of Three rise beyond personal anguish and accept their calling as warriors? Or will doubt and temptation slowly consume them? This story must be told. We must-shhh, I hear footsteps approaching, possibly two men. I've said too much...
In this thought-provoking new book, Anthony Smith analyses key debates between historians and social scientists on the role of nations and nationalism in history.
In "The Antiquity of Nations," Anthony Smith provides a fresh
interpretation of the character of modern nations. Departing from
conventional wisdom, he argues the case for a deeper understanding
of their character, based on an ethno-symbolic analysis of the
myths, memories, symbols and traditions of pre-modern ethnic
communities. Building on his earlier work, the author seeks to
balance the undeniable novel components of the nation with its
ancient, rooted and persistent attributes.
In the first part, the author provides a sustained critique of
the theories of some of the main exponents of modernism, the
current orthodoxy in the study of nations and nationalism, tracing
its origins to the Eurocentric and evolutionist assumptions of
classical sociology. Part Two backs up this challenge through an
exploration of key historical and sociological issues. These
include the possibility of finding nations' in antiquity, the
impact of war on ethnicity at various periods of history, the
long-term routes to nationhood and their modern consequences, the
nature and functions of golden ages, and the impact of Romanticism
on nationalism. The result is a more rounded and penetrating
understanding of one of the most complex phenomena in the modern
world.
"The Antiquity of Nations" will be essential reading for all scholars of nationalism and for all students taking courses on nationalism and ethnicity.
