This book provides a timely review of progress in the area of
primary plant metabolism, and in particular highlights the extent
to which molecular techniques now influence the investigation and
understanding of plant metabolism. The emphasis of the book is
centred on processes related to the dominant pathways of
carbohydrate production and utilisation, and is arranged to reflect
the current focus of researchers on three broadly overlapping areas
of investigation. -- The molecular architecture of selected enzymes
of primary metabolism;
-- The integration of metabolism between organelles, cells, tissues
and organs;
-- The manipulation of major pathways of carbohydrate metabolism.
Each of the contributors is an internationally recognised
researcher who presents a cogent summary of recent advances in the
field. The volume will be of particular value to undergraduates,
graduates and advanced researchers in plant biology, biotechnology
and biochemistry, as well as researchers in related areas of plant
physiology, crop production and horticulture who need to keep
abreast of current developments in the understanding of the
fundamental aspects of plant carbohydrate metabolism.
This book, which has only one very distant forerunner authored by
David A. Hills with David Nowell, represents a very big step that
is the quantification of these problems and represents the
twenty-five years' worth of work which have gone on at Oxford since
the first book on the subject. Fatigue (popularly 'metal fatigue')
is the primary failure mode of all machines, engines, transmissions
and indeed almost all mechanical devices. The propagation of cracks
is well understood and is treated in the subject Fracture
Mechanics. By contrast, the nucleation of cracks is very hard to
quantify and this remains the case with so-called 'free initiation'
and, to a lesser extent, at cracks nucleated from stress raising
features. But the third form of nucleation, where cracks start from
the edges of rubbing components, that is, at joints, is potentially
a very much better-defined environment, and therefore, the problem
is amendable to attack by applied mechanics and experiment. The
contents are of value both to those embarking on research on the
subject and to practitioner in industry.
Global in scope and written by leading scholars in the field, the
Research Handbook on Mergers and Acquisitions is a modern-day
survey providing cutting edge analysis of the state of M&A
using history, theory, and empirical work, and also providing a
theoretical framework for future research and development in the
field. Its chapters explore the history of mergers and
acquisitions, considering the theory behind the structure of modern
transaction documentation. The authors also address other key
M&A issues, such as takeover defenses; judges and
practitioners' perspectives on litigation; the appraisal remedy and
other aspects of Federal and state law, as well as M&A
considerations in the structure of start-ups. The book's coverage
is novel as well as broad, broaching comparative issues and
shareholder activism in addition to more traditional areas. This
Research Handbook will be an invaluable resource for scholars,
practitioners, judges and legislators
Comprising essays specially commissioned for the volume, leading
scholars who have shaped the field of corporate law and governance
explore and critique developments in this vibrant and expanding
area and offer possible directions for future research. This
important addition to the Research Handbooks in Law and Economics
series provides insights into subjects such as the role of
directors, shareholders, creditors and employees; empirical studies
of litigation and shareholder activism; executive compensation;
corporate gatekeepers; comparative law; and behavioral approaches
to law and finance. Topics are organized within five sections:
corporate constituencies, insider governance, gatekeepers,
jurisdiction, and new theory. Taken as a whole, the volume serves
as an introduction for those new to the field and as a reference
for those unfamiliar with some of the topics discussed.
Authoritative and accessible, the Research Handbook on the
Economics of Corporate Law will be a valuable resource for
students, scholars, and practitioners of corporate law and
economics. Contributors: R.B. Ahdieh, V. Atanasov, S.M. Bainbridge,

This book provides a broad survey of past and recent scholarship on
mergers and acquisitions. Seminal work on the history, rationales
and outcomes of mergers and acquisitions is followed by leading
articles on what M&A lawyers do. Major articles by prominent
authorities in the field explore how deals are done, defended and
terminated. The volume concludes with several eminent selections on
private equity deals and international issues. With an
authoritative original introduction by the editors, the book is a
valuable source of reference to the leading theoretical and
historical perspectives on the subject, and to the particulars of
deal-making. It will be of interest not only to scholars in law,
business and economics but also to lawyers and policymakers dealing
with mergers and acquisitions.
Scholarly analysis of corporate law in the United States has come
to be dominated by an economic approach. Professor Hill and
Professor McDonnell here draw together seminal articles which
represent major milestones along the road that economics has
traveled in coming to play this central role in corporate law
scholarship. The focus is on the analysis of corporate law, drawing
mainly upon legal scholarship and particularly on US scholarship,
which is the originator of the application of modern economic
analysis to corporate law and has had much influence in other
countries.Beginning with several of the key works on the economics
of the firm which have most heavily influenced legal scholarship,
the title explores the central legal role of the board of directors
and state competition for corporate charters. It further considers
the role of hostile takeovers and board defenses against them and
the effectiveness of shareholder suits and other agency mechanisms.

The Caraleigh neighborhood in south Raleigh was founded in 1892
with the opening of a cotton mill, fertilizer plant and workers'
town. The old textile complex, with its "immense" brick structures
continue to evoke a strong impression of a bygone period. The old
mill remains the community's focal point as of 2022, leading some
to worry that Caraleigh's modernized structure may conceal dark
secrets. After the Civil War, cotton mills were at the heart of the
South's frenzied pursuit of economic and psychological regeneration
between 1880 and 1915. As Raleigh's greatest textile venture,
Caraleigh itself was founded by a group of cotton investors. The
origins of Raleigh's north-south divide can be seen in the many
economic, psychological, social and political perils. While the
Downtown South project promises a bright future for Raleigh in
2022, a close examination of the city's economic and social
stratification in the past reveals the city's inequality, resulting
in an affluent north Raleigh and a pauperized "south Raleigh
ghetto." This work illuminates previously unrecognized aspects of
Raleigh's history, such as how an outskirts neighborhood shaped the
city's development during the twentieth century.

This book is about learning how to live the good life. Part
biography and part philosophical inquiry, it is a fresh, original
interpretation of the intellectual world of the largely forgotten,
eighteenth-century professor, Adam Ferguson. Although less
well-known today than his famous Scottish contemporaries, Adam
Smith and David Hume, Ferguson was considered their equal in the
18th century. The book shows how Ferguson, who grew up speaking
Gaelic and English, and spent a decade ministering to a Highlander
regiment, developed a distinctive, cross-cultural approach to moral
philosophy that is relevant for doing comparative ethics in today's
global village. The premise is that life in the twenty-first
century is plagued by a moral disorientation that has affinities
with the materialism, privatization, social fragmentation and
spiritual crises that were emerging in 18th-century, urban
Scotland. Like his peers in medical science, Ferguson pursued what
was then known as moral science with a particular concern to
diagnose and treat moral "dis-ease." The book contends that his
moral philosophy lectures became strikingly modern experiments in
recovering moral moorings-disclosing epitomes of moral dynamics,
investigating the use of moral terms in ordinary language, and
crafting moral principles, such as probity, which preserved
classical moral virtues but also incorporated the practical wisdom
of 'peoples of the mountains.' Although focused on re-discovering
Ferguson as a full-blown ethicist before his time, the book is also
intended as a primer for the reader's own quest for living a life
which is emblematic of ethical integrity The primary audience for
this book is philosophers, historians, religious studies scholars
who specialize in ethics, eighteenth-century English literature
scholars, and social scientists (anthropologists, sociologists and
political scientists) who focus on the eighteenth-century.

Sadly, efforts to end racial segregation and discrimination have
clearly not led to racial equality or a colorblind society. Rather,
African Americans have become increasingly class-polarized since
the civil rights era as the persistent racialization of American
society has perpetuated the wage gap between Blacks and Whites,
leading to increased rates of unemployment and underemployment
among African Americans. The significant minority of Black families
historically headed by single mothers became a statistical majority
during the twentieth century, and the tension in the gender
relations of Black men and women became a more prominent topic of
debate. This compelling and timely collection examines contemporary
family and workforce patterns and how they are continuing to shape
the quality of life for African Americans across the United States.
In Black Intimacies: A Gender Perspective on Families and
Relationships, Shirley A. Hill applies a gender lens to the
multiple systems of oppression that have shaped the lives of
African American women and men. She challenges the image of a
monolithic black population, a legacy of the civil rights movement
that she argues is impossible to sustain in the postmodern era.
Through a critique of intersectionality theory, Hill examines the
ways in which gender has affected experiences of intimacy, family
relationships, child rearing and motherhood for contemporary
African Americans. Drawing on ethnographic material, interviews,
and scholarly research, Hill's work rethinks the cultural and
historical definitions of black identity, and reconceptualizes the
various forms of oppression faced by black women. This book will be
useful to students and instructors of African American Studies,
Gender Studies, Sociology, Anthropology, Marriage and Family, and
Social Work.
