This book provides a timely review of progress in the area of
primary plant metabolism, and in particular highlights the extent
to which molecular techniques now influence the investigation and
understanding of plant metabolism. The emphasis of the book is
centred on processes related to the dominant pathways of
carbohydrate production and utilisation, and is arranged to reflect
the current focus of researchers on three broadly overlapping areas
of investigation. -- The molecular architecture of selected enzymes
of primary metabolism;
-- The integration of metabolism between organelles, cells, tissues
and organs;
-- The manipulation of major pathways of carbohydrate metabolism.
Each of the contributors is an internationally recognised
researcher who presents a cogent summary of recent advances in the
field. The volume will be of particular value to undergraduates,
graduates and advanced researchers in plant biology, biotechnology
and biochemistry, as well as researchers in related areas of plant
physiology, crop production and horticulture who need to keep
abreast of current developments in the understanding of the
fundamental aspects of plant carbohydrate metabolism.
Global in scope and written by leading scholars in the field, the
Research Handbook on Mergers and Acquisitions is a modern-day
survey providing cutting edge analysis of the state of M&A
using history, theory, and empirical work, and also providing a
theoretical framework for future research and development in the
field. Its chapters explore the history of mergers and
acquisitions, considering the theory behind the structure of modern
transaction documentation. The authors also address other key
M&A issues, such as takeover defenses; judges and
practitioners' perspectives on litigation; the appraisal remedy and
other aspects of Federal and state law, as well as M&A
considerations in the structure of start-ups. The book's coverage
is novel as well as broad, broaching comparative issues and
shareholder activism in addition to more traditional areas. This
Research Handbook will be an invaluable resource for scholars,
practitioners, judges and legislators
The articles in this volume grew out of a 2019 workshop, held at
Johns Hopkins University, that was inspired by a belief that when
mathematicians take time to reflect on the social forces involved
in the production of mathematics, actionable insights result.
Topics range from mechanisms that lead to an inclusion-exclusion
dichotomy within mathematics to common pitfalls and better
alternatives to how mathematicians approach teaching, mentoring and
communicating mathematical ideas. This collection will be of
interest to students, faculty and administrators wishing to gain a
snapshot of the current state of professional norms within
mathematics and possible steps toward improvements.
Comprising essays specially commissioned for the volume, leading
scholars who have shaped the field of corporate law and governance
explore and critique developments in this vibrant and expanding
area and offer possible directions for future research. This
important addition to the Research Handbooks in Law and Economics
series provides insights into subjects such as the role of
directors, shareholders, creditors and employees; empirical studies
of litigation and shareholder activism; executive compensation;
corporate gatekeepers; comparative law; and behavioral approaches
to law and finance. Topics are organized within five sections:
corporate constituencies, insider governance, gatekeepers,
jurisdiction, and new theory. Taken as a whole, the volume serves
as an introduction for those new to the field and as a reference
for those unfamiliar with some of the topics discussed.
Authoritative and accessible, the Research Handbook on the
Economics of Corporate Law will be a valuable resource for
students, scholars, and practitioners of corporate law and
economics. Contributors: R.B. Ahdieh, V. Atanasov, S.M. Bainbridge,

Ralph J. Bunche (1904-1971), winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in
1950, was a key U.S. diplomat in the planning and creation of the
United Nations in 1945. In 1947 he was invited to join the
permanent UN Secretariat as director of the new Trusteeship
Department. In this position, Bunche played a key role in setting
up the trusteeship system that provided important impetus for
postwar decolonization ending European control of Africa as well as
an international framework for the oversight of the decolonization
process after the Second World War. Trustee for the Human Community
is the first volume to examine the totality of Bunche's unrivalled
role in the struggle for African independence both as a key
intellectual and an international diplomat and to illuminate it
from the broader African American perspective. These commissioned
essays examine the full range of Ralph Bunche's involvement in
Africa. The scholars explore sensitive political issues, such as
Bunche's role in the Congo and his views on the struggle in South
Africa. Trustee for the Human Community stands as a monument to the
profoundly important role of one of the greatest Americans in one
of the greatest political movements in the history of the twentieth
century. Contributors: David Anthony, Ralph A. Austen, Abena P. A.

Scholarly analysis of corporate law in the United States has come
to be dominated by an economic approach. Professor Hill and
Professor McDonnell here draw together seminal articles which
represent major milestones along the road that economics has
traveled in coming to play this central role in corporate law
scholarship. The focus is on the analysis of corporate law, drawing
mainly upon legal scholarship and particularly on US scholarship,
which is the originator of the application of modern economic
analysis to corporate law and has had much influence in other
countries.Beginning with several of the key works on the economics
of the firm which have most heavily influenced legal scholarship,
the title explores the central legal role of the board of directors
and state competition for corporate charters. It further considers
the role of hostile takeovers and board defenses against them and
the effectiveness of shareholder suits and other agency mechanisms.
31 articles, dating from 1931 to 2006 Contributors include: L.A.

This book, which has only one very distant forerunner authored by
David A. Hills with David Nowell, represents a very big step that
is the quantification of these problems and represents the
twenty-five years' worth of work which have gone on at Oxford since
the first book on the subject. Fatigue (popularly 'metal fatigue')
is the primary failure mode of all machines, engines, transmissions
and indeed almost all mechanical devices. The propagation of cracks
is well understood and is treated in the subject Fracture
Mechanics. By contrast, the nucleation of cracks is very hard to
quantify and this remains the case with so-called 'free initiation'
and, to a lesser extent, at cracks nucleated from stress raising
features. But the third form of nucleation, where cracks start from
the edges of rubbing components, that is, at joints, is potentially
a very much better-defined environment, and therefore, the problem
is amendable to attack by applied mechanics and experiment. The
contents are of value both to those embarking on research on the
subject and to practitioner in industry.
This book shows how living in a highly racialized society affects
health through multiple social contexts, including neighborhoods,
personal and family relationships, and the medical system.
Black-white disparities in health, illness, and mortality have been
widely documented, but most research has focused on single factors
that produce and perpetuate those disparities, such as individual
health behaviors and access to medical care. This is the first book
to offer a comprehensive perspective on health and sickness among
African Americans, starting with an examination of how race has
been historically constructed in the US and in the medical system
and the resilience of racial ideologies and practices. Racial
disparities in health reflect racial inequalities in living
conditions, incarceration rates, family systems, and opportunities.
These racial disparities often cut across social class boundaries
and have gender-specific consequences. Bringing together data from
existing quantitative and qualitative research with new archival
and interview data, this book advances research in the fields of
families, race-ethnicity, and medical sociology.
The Caraleigh neighborhood in south Raleigh was founded in 1892
with the opening of a cotton mill, fertilizer plant and workers'
town. The old textile complex, with its "immense" brick structures
continue to evoke a strong impression of a bygone period. The old
mill remains the community's focal point as of 2022, leading some
to worry that Caraleigh's modernized structure may conceal dark
secrets. After the Civil War, cotton mills were at the heart of the
South's frenzied pursuit of economic and psychological regeneration
between 1880 and 1915. As Raleigh's greatest textile venture,
Caraleigh itself was founded by a group of cotton investors. The
origins of Raleigh's north-south divide can be seen in the many
economic, psychological, social and political perils. While the
Downtown South project promises a bright future for Raleigh in
2022, a close examination of the city's economic and social
stratification in the past reveals the city's inequality, resulting
in an affluent north Raleigh and a pauperized "south Raleigh
ghetto." This work illuminates previously unrecognized aspects of
Raleigh's history, such as how an outskirts neighborhood shaped the
city's development during the twentieth century.

In the contemporary world, war rivals infectious disease as a
global cause of morbidity and mortality. Since the end of World War
II, there have been at least 160 wars around the world with as many
as 25 million (and probably many more) people killed, most of them
civilians. Directly or indirectly, war touches the lives of most
people on the planet, often with lasting and costly impact. Framed
by the holistic and ethnographically grounded theoretical
perspective of critical medical anthropology, and more broadly by
the political economy of health, this book of essays by leading
medical anthropologists and other health social scientists
carefully examines the global effects of war, the war industry, and
the international weapons trade on human health and well-being.
Further, this book goes beyond offering a lively and readable
account of a pressing health concern by critically analyzing the
political and economic forces driving the war machine to inflict
ever-increasing levels of social suffering and loss of life.
