Having always been in love with all things related to aviation
since childhood, Azharuddin Abdul Rahman's dream came true when he
was given a chance to enter the field of aircraft engineering.
Serving as Director-General for eleven years with the Department of
Civil Aviation (DCA), he had had many valuable experiences. However,
the two biggest tragedies that occurred in 2014, that of MH370 and
MH17, had the greatest impact on his life, and affected not just
the victims and their families, but the entire Malaysian aviation
industry.Azharuddin was directly involved in leading the search
missions of the tragic disappearance of MH370 on 8 March 2014, and
in a series of investigations concerning the downing of MH17 in
eastern Ukraine on 17 July of the same year.As Director-General,
Azharuddin faced a heavy burden in the aftermath of the twin
disasters, of which MH370 remains unsolved to the present day. No
one was prepared for the MH370 tragedy despite all the training
they had received. As for MH17, Azharuddin laments that the tragedy
may have been prevented had full information on the level of
conflict in Ukraine been made available during that time. In both
cases, all passengers and crew on board were killed. Both tragic
events marked a new history in the aviation industry, both in
Malaysia and in the international arena, causing new reforms to
burst into action to ensure similar incidents will not happen
again. In writing this book, Azharuddin draws from personal
experience, conducting his research with and around aviation
industry professionals, and drawing insights from others involved
in both incidents to present a full and raw take on the twin
disasters of the Malaysian aviation industry in 2014.

In its totality, this book explores subjects that are rarely
available in primary literature publications and brings diverging
fields together that are generally addressed separately in
specialty journals. The book argues that past school failures are
instructive. The author identifies the structural and emotional
triggers that make it difficult for educators' to overcome the
social constructs that control the progress of Black students,
reproduce inequities, subvert the socio-economic progress of the
nation, and threaten the legitimacy of the U.S. public school
system. One failure is informative; successive school failures are
chock-full of must avoid school policies and instructional
practices. The book analyzes the lessons learned from a list of
school-imposed policies that have molded and determined the
academic progress of Black students. The author argues that much
can be discerned from that which undermined the performance of
schoolteachers' and public school systems. The quantifiable
outcomes of past school practices can better inform educators and
future teachers and school leaders. The book carefully analyzes the
organic evolution of educators' social constructs that regenerated
inequities to reveal the road map for rebuilding genuinely
inclusive and equitable public school systems that serve the
interests of students and society. The book also provides in-depth
analysis of various disciplines that identify the best
methodologies to improve the teaching and learning of Black
students, homeless students, and all other students. The book aims
to offer a unique perspective by carefully unfolding the built in
school structures that obstruct the abilities of school
administrators and teachers to bridge the student achievement gaps
and meet the objectives of consecutive school reform initiatives.
The author's distinctive approach stimulates the thinking of the
entire field of education, and challenges accepted propositions
commonly assumed about African American students. In short, this
book offers a perspective that is rarely shared or understood by
educators and practitioners in the field of education.

Islamic religious teachers (asatizah) and scholars (ulama) play a
significant role in providing spiritual leadership for the
Singapore Malay/Muslim community. Lately, the group has been cast
under the spotlight over a range of issues, from underperformance
in the national examination, their ability to integrate into the
broader society, exposure to radical and conservative ideas such as
Salafism from the Middle East, and unemployment. Reaching for the
Crescent examines a growing segment within the group, namely
Islamic studies graduates, who obtained their degrees from
universities in the Middle East and neighbouring Malaysia and
Indonesia. It identifies factors that condition the proliferation
of Islamic studies graduates in Singapore, examine the dominant
religious institutions they attend, the nature of Islamic education
they received, and their challenges. It tackles the impact of their
religious education on the spiritual life and well-being of the
community. Based on qualitative and quantitative data collected,
the book calls for a rethinking of a prevailing discourse of
Arabization of Singapore Muslims and academic approaches that focus
on madrasah education and Islam through the security lens.

Abdul-Rahman Mustafa offers a deft new translation of a large
extract from the book I'lam al Muwaqqi'in 'An Rabb al 'Alamin, by
the thirteenth-century Islamic scholar, Ibn Qayyim al Jawziyya. The
I'lam comprises an extensive discussion of the subject of taqlid,
or legal imitation. It is one of the most comprehensive treatments
of Islamic legal theory and even today serves as a manual for
mujtahids and muftis. In the portion of the I'lam Mustafa has
translated, Ibn Qayyim introduces the nature of taqlid and divides
it into several categories. He then provides an account of a debate
between a critic of the view that taqlid of a particular school or
a scholar is a religious duty and this critic's interlocutor. Among
the topics discussed are the different kinds of taqlid, the
differences between taqlid and ittibi', the infallibility of
religious scholars, the grounds on which one legal opinion might be
preferred over another, and whether or not laymen can be expected
to perform ijtihad. Ibn Qayyim's legal theory is a formidable
reformulation of traditionalist Hanbalism, a legal-theological
tradition that has always maintained a distinctive character in
Islamic history and that is now growing more influential due to
modern interest in the Wahhabi movement and in Ibn Taymiyya, whose
legal and theological thought was edited and refined by his
student, Ibn Qayyim. In his introduction to the translation,
Mustafa critically reviews the scholarship on taqlid and outlines
Ibn Qayyim's legal theory and the importance of taqlid within it.
Taqlid continues to generate controversy amongst educated Muslims
and particularly academics, as Salafi interpretations of Islam,
which are generally 'anti-taqlid,' come into conflict with the
generally 'pro-taqlid' stance of traditional schools such as the
Hanafis. Mustafa's translation of a classic account of Islamic
legal theory and strong critique of the dominant legal culture are
timely contributions to an increasingly heated debate.
The Nature of Tyranny was written and published at the dawn of the
twentieth century by Abdul Rahman Al-Kawakibi, one of the
pioneering thinkers of the Arab world. More than a century later,
another Arab awakening exploded, led by a new generation of youth
who chanted Al-Kawakibi's words in revolutionary cries from Aleppo,
his hometown, to Cairo's Tahrir Square. Today this seminal text
appears in English for the first time, with a foreword from Leon T.
Goldsmith offering an overview of Al-Kawakibi's intellectual
contributions. The first chapter of the text provides a definition
of tyranny, presenting it as akin to a sickness or malaise that
seeps into all classes of society, leaving behind decay. The
following seven chapters apply this conception of tyranny to what
Al-Kawakibi sees as society's crucial elements: religion,
knowledge, honour, economy, ethics and progress. Having laid a
theoretical framework for understanding the centrality of tyranny,
its characteristics and its devastating effects, Al-Kawakibi
concludes by setting forth a brief programme for remedying the
'disease' of tyranny. The final chapter outlines another book in
which he had planned to elaborate upon his ideas-but, ultimately,
his fate arrived too soon.

This volume contains the proceedings of the Arizona School of
Analysis and Mathematical Physics, held from March 5-9, 2018, at
the University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona. A main goal of this
school was to introduce graduate students and postdocs to exciting
topics of current research that are both influenced by physical
intuition and require the use of cutting-edge mathematics. The
articles in this volume reflect recent progress and innovative
techniques developed within mathematical physics. Two works
investigate spectral gaps of quantum spin systems. Specifically,
Abdul-Rahman, Lemm, Lucia, Nachtergaele, and Young consider
decorated AKLT models, and Lemm demonstrates a finite-size
criterion for $D$-dimensional models. Bachmann, De Roeck, and Fraas
summarize a recent proof of the adiabatic theorem, while Bachmann,
Bols, De Roeck, and Fraas discuss linear response for interacting
Hall insulators. Models on general graphs are the topic of the
articles by Fischbacher, on higher spin XXZ, and by Latushkin and
Sukhtaiev, on an index theorem for Schrodinger operators.
Probabilistic applications are the focus of the articles by DeMuse
and Yin, on exponential random graphs, by Saenz, on KPZ
universality, and by Stolz, on disordered quantum spin chains. In
all, the diversity represented here is a testament to the
enthusiasm this rich field of mathematical physics generates.
