This book summarizes the latest
understanding of the impact of xenobiotics on the developmental and
reproductive processes of aquatic animals, particularly nektonic
forms, which comprise an important group of aquatic ecosystems.
Aquaculture is quickly becoming the largest contributor of fish
protein for human consumption. As the aquaculture business expands,
farmed fish will be exposed to more environmental toxins,
necessitating the use of chemical therapeutic drugs for fish.
This book brings together experts on the regulation of
environmental toxins and food chemicals from around the world, as
well as researchers looking into the metabolism and disposal of
foreign chemicals (xenobiotics) in fish species. The impact of
xenobiotics on reproductive and developmental biology of all living
forms has become of prime importance at the current time. As the
effect of these xenobiotics on aquatic animals is an emerging area
for research and development, several groups across the world are
working on these aspects, targeting different groups of fishes in
both marine and freshwater ecosystems. Â This collective work
highlights several key and updated recent aspects of different
types of xenobiotics entering aquatic ecosystems, impacts of these
agents on reproductive physiology, developmental biology, breeding
biology, hormonal imbalance, aquatic ecology, and pollution on the
aquatic ecosystem. The unique aggregation of different types of
stressors to aquatic animals under a single volume will be a useful
reference for readers, including scientists, teachers, students,
researchers and policymakers and those involved in aquaculture and
environment conservation.
This book is a rich resource of important information on coldwater
fish farming and coldwater fisheries management, including new
research and recent technological advances. It aims to provide an
understanding of the underlying mechanisms of coldwater physiology
of fishes, which is essential for effective fishery management and
for taking advantage of their vast potential application in
aquaculture. Coldwater Fisheries and Aquaculture Management:
Technology for Sustainable Food Production elaborates on key
aspects associated with reproductive biology and endocrinology of
coldwater fishes, such as gonadal development and maturation,
vitellogenesis, steroidogenesis, whole genome information of
fishes, transcriptomics, proteomics, and more. It also looks at
genetic modification of coldwater fishes, phytobiotic-based feed to
attain profitability in aquaculture, and the nutritional
requirements of coldwater fishes, such as plant-based proteins in
fish diets and feeding carbohydrates to fish. It also describes the
beneficial dietary nutrition of fish consumption by humans. Several
chapters address the various challenges to coldwater fish and
fishery management, such as fish bacterial diseases (along with
their immune components and defense mechanisms), unpredictable
nature of climate change on fish, water pollution, etc. The volume
also offers strategies on the sustainable management of fish that
include looking at pollution in freshwater ecosystems,
biotechnological interventions, predicting threats to fish from
climate change, and other factors. This volume will be of value to
those in fishery management and fish science as well as to marine
researchers, faculty and students, and other involved with
aquaculture science and management.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 9th International Workshop on Structural and Syntctic Pattern Recognition, SSPR 2002 and the 4th International Workshop on Statistical Techniques in Pattern Recognition, SPR 2002 held jointly in Windsor, Ontario, Canada in August 2002.The 45 revised full papers and 35 poster papers presented together with three invited papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 116 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on graphs, grammars, and languages; graphs, strings, and grammars; documents and OCR; image shape analysis and application; density estimation and distribution models; multi classifiers and fusion; feature extraction and selection; general methodology; and image shape analysis and application.
This book constitutes the joint refereed proceedings of the 8th
International Workshop on Structural and Syntactic Pattern
Recognition and the 3rd International Workshop on Statistical
Techniques in Pattern Recognition, SSPR 2000 and SPR 2000, held in
Alicante, Spain in August/September 2000. The 52 revised full
papers presented together with five invited papers and 35 posters
were carefully reviewed and selected from a total of 130
submissions. The book offers topical sections on hybrid and
combined methods, document image analysis, grammar and language
methods, structural matching, graph-based methods, shape analysis,
clustering and density estimation, object recognition, general
methodology, and feature extraction and selection.
