Rainbow of Desire is a handbook of exercises with a difference. It
is Augusto Boal's bold and brilliant statement about the
therapeutic ability of theatre to liberate individuals and change
lives. Now translated into English and comprehensively updated from
the French, Rainbow of Desire sets out the techniques which help us
`see' for the first time the oppressions we have internalised.
Boal, a Brazilian theatre director, writer and politician, has been
confronting oppression in various forms for over thirty years. His
belief that theatre is a means to create the future has inspired
hundreds of groups all over the world to use his techniques in a
multitude of settings. This, his latest work, includes such
exercises as: * The Cops in the Head and their anti-bodies * The
screen image * The image of the future we are afraid of * Image and
counter-image ....and many more. Rainbow of Desire will make
fascinating reading for those already familiar with Boal's work and
is also completely accessible to anyone new to Theatre of the
Oppressed techniques.

place, not least in such a clear, practical manner.
Augusto Boal's workshops and theatre exercises are renowned
throughout the world for their life-changing effects. At last this
major director, practitioner, and author of many books on community
theatre speaks out about the subjects most important to him a " the
practical work he does with diverse communities, the effects of
globalization, and the creative possibilities for all of us.
"Legislative Theatre" is the latest and most remarkable stage in
the unique Augusto Boal project. It is an attempt to use theatre in
a political context to create a truer form of democracy--a method
to engage the populace. It is an extraordinary experiment in the
potential of theatre to effect social change.
At the heart of Boal's method of Forum Theatre--which is already
used in diverse contexts--is the dual meaning of the verb "to act":
to perform and take action. In "Legislative Theatre" he takes one
stage further his concept of the "spect-actor," the spectator who
intervenes in an unresolved scenario on stage to try and break a
depicted cycle of oppression. As a politician in his native Rio de
Janeiro, Boal used Forum Theatre to involve the local populace in
generating relevant legislation and social change.
The book includes a full explanation of the genesis and principles
of legislative theatre, and a description of the process in
operation in Rio. Also included are Boal's essays, speeches and
lectures on Popular Theatre, Paolo Freire, cultural activism, the
point of playwrighting, and much else besides.

Moms doing curious and sometimes crazy stuff have dominated the
news for a few years now. It's like the girls gone wild have grown
up and starting having children. Maybe it can be blamed on women
taking on more roles of national leadership. Maybe it's because of
reality television. Maybe it is because we inherited the feminist
movement and don't know what the hell to do with it.
Nothing says Texas like a drive-thru liquor barn. If you've ever
driven through one you know it is floor to ceiling liquor. It is
like a museum. It's an awe inspiring collection of scotch, beer,
whiskey, brown liquor, blue liquor and creamy white liquor, hard
stuff, girly stuff and mixed drinks. The bartender came to my car
with a tray full of Styrofoam cups. Each had a sliver of clear tape
across the straw hole. I thought, Is he kidding? A piece of tape?
That slight piece of tape was apparently going to save my ass from
jail, should I have gotten pulled over by the police. Adrian

I was murdered once. True stories (and wild speculations) about the
lives and deaths of homeless people, uncovered by the UK's leading
homelessness theatre company Cardboard Citizens. A Jamaican boxer
known as The Entertainer, a Spanish stag party celebrating with
human calligraphy, a woman who said it with flowers, a Pole not
called Sam, Russian tourists, a Greek called Pericles. And death.
