This book, first published in 1986, is a major reference work for
the political discussions arising out of the 1985 Congress
revisions of US food and farm laws. It covers production,
distribution and consumption of food, analyses international as
well as domestic problems, and presents new ways forward.
Emphasising public policy and programmes, the book has chapters on
agricultural production; environmental and resource problems; food
marketing; domestic hunger and nutrition; and world hunger and
development.
"Mongolia is landlocked between its neighbors China and Russia in
the heart of Asia. For centuries after the disintegration of
Genghis Khan's empire it was ruled by one or the other, but in 1990
the Mongols embraced democracy. Now, after two centuries of Manchu
stagnation and seventy years of Soviet communism, they are
rebuilding their national heritage. Rarely in the news but making
progress toward a market economy, this resource-rich but
infrastructure-poor country is a land of pioneers, and its greatest
asset is the Mongol people, who are friendly, cooperative,
ambitious, and well educated. English is now the first foreign
language and the country's leaders are forging new partnerships
with international investors. Travelers from across the world are
drawn to the oland of blue skyo by its picturesque mountains and
lakes, flower-carpeted steppes and stony deserts, home to the snow
leopard, the wild horse and camel, and the Gobi bear. The broad
pasturelands, with herds of grazing livestock, and the traditional
lifestyle of the nomads contrast with the busy streets of the
capital Ulan Bator, a bustling metropolis of over one million
people, modern hotels, apartments, and shops, i
This book examines the vocational socialisation processes that
young people must undertake in order to be offered a full time
contract by an English professional football club. Aspiring young
footballers often make speculative decisions about career choice
during the years which Ginsberg described as the 'fantasy period'.
This work looks at early career choice and also the factors that
influence an aspiring elite performer. After surveying recent
developments within professional football at youth level, a case
study of an English football league club draws upon documents,
interviews, privileged insider observation, and a sustained
qualitative and ethnographic study of the socialisation process
into the incipient occupational culture. The findings identify the
conditions of habitus for a professional footballer, the changing
dimensions to social class within the game and the effects recent
changes have had on clubs and young players hoping to enter
professional football as a career. This book should interest sports
academics and parents wishing to gain an in-depth understanding of
the English professional game at youth level.
