This book presents close-readings of seven post-millennial comedic
films: Up in the Air, Tropic Thunder, JCVD, Winnebago Man, The
Trotsky, Be Kind Rewind, and Hamlet 2. It is a sequel to Stanley
Cavell's 1981 landmark study of the comedic genre, Pursuits of
Happiness, where he examines seven comedies of Hollywood's "Golden
Age." Khan puts forward the idea that comedies, once centred on the
conventional "happy ending," are no longer interested in detailing
the steps to any ending we might call happy. Instead, the agenda of
most culturally serious comedies today is to "spoof," to make all
that is fair foul. The seven films presented here risk a type of
cultural nihilism-spoofing for the sake of spoofing and nothing
else, indicative not of film's promise but its failure. By equating
the failure of film with the failed national politics of Canada (or
the failed politics of nationalism and community more generally),
this study shows that comedy has less to do with happiness and more
to do with the grotesque. The films analysed represent
hyper-realized forms of comic irony and move towards what theatre
knows as tragedy, or a tragic vision.
'Full of the compassion, humanity and mischievous sense of fun you
would expect from Dr Amir. This is a complete delight from a born
storyteller.' - Lorraine Kelly He’s the perfect catch (according
to his mother). Yousef is the golden child to his strict Pakistani
parents, overshadowing his younger sister, Rehana. As he finishes
his medical degree in London, Yousef’s life appears to be mapped
out for him: become a doctor, marry a suitable girl of his
parents’ choosing and, above all, make his family proud. Then
Yousef meets Jess. A fellow medical student, Jess presents a
complication to the plan. Suddenly, Yousef finds himself torn
between two worlds – keeping each a secret from the other. Then,
as graduation day looms, Yousef’s mother informs him that she’s
started looking for his wife . . . From Dr Amir Khan, How (Not) To
Have an Arranged Marriage is a timely, heartfelt novel which looks
at all aspects of modern arranged marriages. Praise for How (Not)
to Have an Arranged Marriage: 'Heartwarming, hilarious and
incredibly insightful. Writing with poignant honesty about the
messy nature of life, Dr. Amir Khan is definitely an author I’ll
be looking out for in the future.' - J F Murray, author of Fling
This book highlights and discusses recent developments that have
contributed to an improved understanding of observed mantle
heterogeneities and their relation to the thermo-chemical state of
Earth's mantle, which ultimately holds the key to unlocking the
secrets of the evolution of our planet. This series of topical
reviews and original contributions address 4 themes. Theme 1 covers
topics in geophysics, including global and regional seismic
tomography, electrical conductivity and seismic imaging of mantle
discontinuities and heterogeneities in the upper mantle, transition
zone and lower mantle. Theme 2 addresses geochemical views of the
mantle including lithospheric evolution from analysis of mantle
xenoliths, composition of the deep Earth and the effect of water on
subduction-zone processes. Theme 3 discusses geodynamical
perspectives on the global thermo-chemical structure of the deep
mantle. Theme 4 covers application of mineral physics data and
phase equilibrium computations to infer the regional-scale
thermo-chemical structure of the mantle.

Urdu is the official language of Pakistan and a widely spoken
language in India. Urdu is written in a modified Persian Arabic
script called "Abjad." This concise dictionary has approximately
13000 words and is designed in a one to one format. The Urdu
meanings are accompanied by its Romanization in English to help the
user with correct sounds. The dictionary is compiled by Amir Khan
and is available on Amazon, KTL Communications and from other major
book sellers.
English to Pashto & Pashto to English with Phonetics is a
concise dictionary that includes approx. 24000 words i.e. approx.
13000 words in English to Pashto and 11000 in the Pashto to English
section. A concept of one-on-one meaning has been followed and a
single meaning has been provided for majority of the words while
others have explanatory meanings. The Pashto to English section has
been arranged in left-to-right order of the Pashto alphabets
(instead of right-to-left) in order to facilitate the users.
Amir Khan is an experienced language professional with more than 9
years of language experience. Amir is certified by the American

Poverty is one of the major problems in the world. Currently over
one third of the population of Pakistan is living under the poverty
line. In Pakistan various economic empowerment programs have been
lunched to improve the socio economic profile of the peoples. The
current study was conducted in 2008-2009 to investigate the impact
of government poverty alleviation programs on the people of Peuchar
Valley, Swat. The random sampling techniques were adopted and two
hundred individuals and nine group questionnaires were filled from
key informed person of nine Villages. The study revealed that
majority of Peucharine tribes is illiterate, jobless and living
below poverty line. It has been concluded from the study that some
relationship found between government poverty alleviation programs
and socio economic status of the peoples which enhance and improve
the livelihood security of the area. The study suggested that there
are certain inadequacies and inequities in the Poverty reduction
programs and Zakat system which must be removed to improve the
socio economic conditions of local community in the Valley.
Environmental science is an important and special aspect of today's
educational system because it takes parts in almost all of the
processes of the universe especially our planet earth. The study of
environmental science helps toward understanding of how and why and
plays an important role in the moulding of this industrialized and
urbanized world. As we all know that today we are living in a very
complex world with complex legal and political issues surrounding
the environment. To assure an adequate supply of environmental
natural resources to meet broad needs of humans around the world,
the development of scientifically sound strategies for sustainable
environment development are critical. The main aim behind this book
is to make every one aware about the ongoing issues of environment
(our surroundings) and to preserve the quality of environment that
nourishes both the humans and other natural communities. To better
understand these issues, one also needs to know the essentials of
environmental science and it is only possible through a proper
reference.
Sentry Gun with face detection is a turret based weapon system,
that can neutralize targets with user control, within its range.
This model consists of mount with two servo motors for tilt and
pan, a target detector (a camera) and an airsoft-gun. There are
many ways to use a real sentry gun: anti-air defense, anti-vehicle
defense (at checkpoints) and anti-personnel defense. This system
falls under the third category. This device has an automatic toy
gun mounted on top of a mechanical assembly as a weapon which is
triggered by an electronic relay. The gun will have the ability to
move in the theta and pi directions (i.e. pan and tilt), which will
be controlled by two servo motors connected to Arduino Duemilanove
board. The camera is mounted on a gun and is used to get the real
time image and it will transfer it to a computer where an image
processing algorithm calculates the position of target. This
calculation is then sent to the Arduino board and then the motors
orient the gun at appropriate coordinates. Once the gun is pointed
towards the target, it is locked on it. The trigger mechanism is
controlled manually by a user sitting at the backhand.
Quadrotor is a rotorcraft with four vertically oriented propellers.
Two of the propellers spin in clockwise direction and the other two
in the counter clockwise direction. For a Quadrotor Helicopter a
stabilizing controller is always needed. In this book Artificial
Neural Networks based Control Methodology to stabilize the a
Quadrotor Helicopoter, has been explained. Firstly a mathematical
model of Quadrotor is developed. A simplified approach is adopted
using momentum theory, where the gyroscopic effect and air friction
on machine's body has been neglected, resulting in a simplified
model which is useful in designing a controller to stabilize the
machine in hover state. The proposed model is nonlinear since the
rotor dynamics are function of square of motor inputs. In the
controller designing, Direct Inverse Neural Network Control
methodology is employed. For that matter 16,8,4-MLP, 16,16,4-MLP
and 16,64,4-MLP are used to control the Quadrotor plant. There
performance is compared using simulation results. Direct Inverse
Control using 16,64,4-MLP gives the best performance amongst all
the other considered.
