Labour Disrupted exposes the precariousness of union organisation and how labour movements have had to respond to the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic. It addresses issues related to the fourth industrial revolution on the working class, and the challenges of skills development and inclusiveness.

Labour Disrupted reflects on the past and the future of labour, primarily in South Africa but also globally. It focuses on how South Africa’s lockdown during the Covid-19 pandemic further exposed key contradictions and challenges that labour movements face.

The contributions include a diverse range of topics currently engaged with by those actively engaged in the field of labour movement. Essays by academics and activists tackle thorny issues: from redefining democracy in South Africa, to experiences of inclusiveness (or lack thereof) in workplace environments by women, young people, migrant workers, LGBTI people and people living with disabilities. The volume addresses contemporary issues related to the use of technology and the impact of the fourth industrial revolution on the youth and the working class, and the challenges of skills development and restructuring in the workplace.

'n Sterk bewustheid van die geskiedenis van Suid-Afrika kenmerk die gedigte in Retoer, Bezuidenhout se debuutbundel. Die bree verloop van die geskiedenis kry 'n persoonlike kleur deur die bytrek van sy eie voorgeslagte en deur die aanvaarding van 'n lotsverbondenheid met sowel die voorgeslagte as tydgenote, die wat “in Angola en in Wimpy Bars moes vrek”. In talle gedigte is reise ter sprake: reise in die verlede soos die van die Europese immigrante na die land, die reise van die Voortrekkers die binneland in, van mynwerkers na Johannesburg, van lattelanders na groot stede; ook die van dienspligtiges na die buurland Namibie en van emigrante na lande soos Kanada en Australie. Telkens word daar egter teruggekeer na die twee groot stede Pretoria en Johannesburg. Bezuidenhout slaag daarin om die moeisaamheid, somberheid en selfs uitsigloosheid van 'n kleinburgerlike bestaan in die stad te verwoord, maar bowenal om die menslike gesig van die stede ook na vore te bring. Die gedigte in die vyf afdelings van Retoer is oop en toeganklik en roep 'n wereld op wat vir die meeste Afrikaanse lesers herkenbaar behoort te wees.

Labour Beyond Cosatu is the fourth volume in the series Taking Democracy Seriously - a ground-breaking, textured and nuanced study on workers and democracy - which was established in the 1990s. The series looks at members of trade unions affiliated to the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) and provides a rich database of trade union members and research conducted over the past twenty years. It is one of the very few such resources available to researchers anywhere in the world. Labour Beyond Cosatu paints a complex picture. The 12 chapters of the volume explore various rebellions and conflicts in the trade union sector, starting with the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and rivalries between Cosatu affiliates. Unpacking the conflicts between state-sector and private-sector workers, contributors look at the impact of generational and educational shifts, seen by some commentators as proof that Cosatu is now 'middle class'. Aan die een kant is daar die groter ruimte van die Suid-Afrikaanse stad en platteland, en aan die ander kant die intieme ruimte van die huis, veral die kombuis, gevul met verskillende toestelle. In albei hierdie ruimtes is verandering aan die werk. Die slopende werking van die geskiedenis bring verval, afsondering en verlatenheid in stad en dorp mee; in die kombuis is die verandering geheimsinniger, soms meer sinister, en wonder die spreker oor die sameswerings van huishoudelike toestelle teen hulle gebruikers (“Kombuiskomplot”). In die gedig “Muizenberg, renovator’s dream” word die verandering wat die geskiedenis meebring, gesien as die “ewige ritme van bou en verval”, daarenteen is die prosesse in die huis, afkoeling, reiniging, en voorbereiding van maaltye iets baie meer basies, maar noodsaaklik, soos die digter in “You’ll always find me in the kitchen at parties” aanvoer: “Die geskiedenis, liewe vriende,/word selde in fabrieke vervaardig,/soos enige digter wat haar sous werd is weet:/In kombuise word dit opgekook.”
