This volume brings together a range of celebrated and less familiar
translations of Ovid's Metamorphoses produced in English between
1480 and 1625, beginning with the story of Narcissus from Caxton's
manuscript translation of the Metamorphoses and ending with George
Sandys's version of Callisto's tale. The volume as a whole reflects
the complex (and shifting) variety of Ovid's early modern
reception. These poems, some of them republished here for the first
time, help extend and enrich our understanding of Ovid's influence
on early modern literature. All texts have been fully modernised
and annotated, rendering them accessible to students and general

This volume examines the dynamics of socio-political order in
post-colonial states across the Pacific Islands region and West
Africa in order to elaborate on the processes and practices of

post-liberal conceptualisations of peacebuilding, this book

institutions involved in the provision of peace, security and

A new interpretation of Celtic Christianity, supported by images of
Christ taken from manuscripts, metalwork and sculpture, and showing
how it departed from continental practice largely due to a
differing perception and application of Pelagianism. Christ in
Celtic Christianity gives a new interpretation of the nature of
Christianity in Celtic Britain and Ireland from the fifth to the
tenth century. The written and visual evidence on which the authors
base their argument includes images of Christ created in and for
this milieu, taken from manuscripts, metalwork and sculpture and
reproduced in this study. The authors challenge the received
opinion that Celtic Christians were in unity with Romein all
matters except the method of Easter reckoning and the shape of the
clerical tonsure. They find, on the contrary, that the strain of
the Pelagian heresy which rooted itself in Britain in the early
fifth century influenced the theology and practice of the Celtic
monastic Churches on both sides of the Irish Sea for several
hundred years, creating a theological spectrum quite distinct from

Following the development of the German Lied after the nineteenth
century - when it was widely known as the setting of Romantic
poetry to music - this book explores the changing artistic scene in
the early twentieth century, as rapid social, economic and
environmental changes affected German cultural production. The Lied
then faced not only a crisis of identity, but also a threat to its
survival. This book considers the literary and musical ideas that
both challenged and complemented each other as new directions in
songwriting were developed across the modern period. The composers
selected for their relevance in Lieder composition during this time
illustrate not only the diversity of their musical thought but also
a changing approach to the relationship between the poetic text and
its musical counterpart. Hans Pfitzner represents the determination
to maintain established tradition; subsequently, a chronological
progression through the individuality of Paul Hindemith and social
integrity of Hanns Eisler leads to the point where transformation
of the genre can be said to have begun, with Arnold Schoenberg.
With the Lieder of Alban Berg and Anton Webern, the genre arrived
at a point of convergence with the ideals of German modernism. This
study offers new insights into the cultural significance of German
songwriting in the first part of the twentieth century.
