Wealthy, popular Charlotte and quiet, working class Drew couldn’t
be more different, but both face a common enemy at Cooke’s
Academy in the form of the Stewards – an elite group of
students whose power to manipulate school culture is feared by
pupils and teachers alike. Drew, a newcomer to Cooke’s, must
navigate the strict codes of masculinity laid down by the Stewards
in order to have a hope of moving on to university, while Charlotte
dreams of speaking freely about the constraints and abuses of the
culture which is propelling her towards a life she’s not sure she
wants. Through drag art and poetry the unlikely pair follow a
dangerous trajectory which will lead them closer to one another and
further away from the paths laid out for them.
Historians and broadcasters Peter Snow and Ann MacMillan tell the
real stories of the most powerful men and women in British history.
Kings & Queens explores the lives, loves, triumphs and
disasters of a monarchy that is the envy of the world. Snow and
MacMillan offer a unique insight into those born to rule, whether
villains or heroes - from cruel King John and warrior-king Edward
III, to our own Elizabeth II: dutiful, discreet and the
longest-reigning queen in the world. This is the story of modern
civilization through the lens of those who have ruled.
'Highly readable . . . an intimate and varied account of
fascinating stories of people at war' History of War War Stories is
a fascinating account of ordinary men and women swept up in the
turbulence of war. These are the stories - many untold until now -
of thirty-four individuals who have pushed the boundaries of love,
bravery, suffering and terror beyond the imaginable. They span
three centuries and five continents. There is the courage of Edward
Seager who survived the Charge of the Light Brigade; the cunning of
Krystyna Skarbek, quick-thinking spy and saboteur during the Second
World War; the skullduggery of Benedict Arnold, who switched sides
in the American War of Independence and the compassion of Magdalene
de Lancey who tenderly nursed her dying husband at Waterloo. Told
with vivid narrative flair and full of unexpected insights, War
Stories moves effortlessly from tales of spies, escapes and
innovation to uplifting acts of humanity, celebrating men and women
whose wartime experiences are beyond compare.
'Be nice to the majority of people and they won't bother you much.
Don't get too involved. Have a laugh but keep your distance.'
These are the words 16-year-old Cariad lives by. She's just been placed
in yet another foster home, this time with an elderly Christian couple
in a small town off the coast of Northern Ireland.
Cariad knows how to play this game. She'll toe the line just enough
that her new foster parents don't ask what she gets up to when the sun
goes down, just enough that they leave her alone. It's easier that way.
But when a boy at school disappears - presumed dead - and no one seems
to care, it really bothers her. Then one night out walking on the
clifftops, she sees him and he asks her to keep his secret.
Don't get too involved. Have a laugh but keep your distance. These are
the words Cariad has lived by . . . until now.

Nollaig has survived life in Belfast with her alcoholic dad on
wits, courage and the gift of the gab. But now she's frightened:
not for herself, but for the baby she's secretly carrying. She
decides to run away. She finds refuge in the little-used crypt of a
local church. She plans to stay there until after Christmas, when
she'll be sixteen and free to leave home for good. The only person
she tells about her pregnancy, her plans, and her hiding place is
her best friend Stephen. He knows only too well how dangerous the
truth can be, if the truth marks you out as 'different'. When the
church's vicar discovers them, they think their time is up; but
they've discovered his little secret - and will use it against him
if he reveals theirs. Overlooked by an angel in the stained glass,
these three souls-in-hiding face the choice before them: a life
hidden in the safety of shadows, or a life lived freely, fully
fledged and in plain sight?
A fascinating account of ordinary men and women swept up in the
turbulence of conflict, War Stories tells the tales of thirty-four
individuals who have pushed the boundaries of love, bravery,
suffering, and terror beyond the imaginable. These stories span

Tilly is perched at the top of Belfast's largest crane. She likes to climb up high at night in order to feel free from a city which, despite the best PR, is still full of trouble and conflict. Eventually, she comes back down to discover her bike is missing and in its place is a boy named Brew. Wearing eyeliner and high-heeled boots, he offers her a drink from his flask of coffee before disappearing into the night. The next morning, Tilly's bike is returned, but tucked into the spoke of the wheel is a card with Brew's number on it.
As Tilly learns to trust Brew, he leads her into a world she never knew existed - a world of parties in abandoned houses, completing missions that involve break-ins, and risking everything just to help strangers in need; the world of The Unknowns. What Tilly doesn't anticipate is that they will also make her question everything she was brought up to believe in, and force her to make a choice that will stay with her for the rest of her life.
The Unknowns is a story about hope in a city where increasing numbers of young people are struggling to get by, a place where there is no trust in the political system, and where some people still dare to dream.
A spirited examination of world history, told through 50 key
documents, by two celebrated historians and journalists. With a
wealth of experience between them on political, social, cultural
and military history, and today's current affairs, Peter Snow and
Ann MacMillan are the perfect guides to appreciating the
significance of each document. Chapters are devoted to each of the
50 documents across the political, military, artistic, and
scientific spheres, and supported by additional contemporary
images. The documents themselves have been researched from the
collections of national archives, museums, libraries, and private
collections around the world. The authors explain their criteria
for selection and provide the pertinent details of each one, taking
us on a journey from the scripts of the earliest civilizations
through to momentous speeches and papers of today.
