Handbook of Women Biblical Interpreters - A Historical and Biographical Guide (Paperback): Marion Ann Taylor, Agnes Choi Handbook of Women Biblical Interpreters - A Historical and Biographical Guide (Paperback)
Marion Ann Taylor, Agnes Choi
R1,205 Discovery Miles 12 050 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Word Guild 2012 Canadian Christian Writing Award Honorable Mention, The Grace Irwin Prize (2013) 2012 Book of the Year Award, Foreword Magazine The history of women interpreters of the Bible is a neglected area of study. Marion Taylor presents a one-volume reference tool that introduces readers to a wide array of women interpreters of the Bible from the entire history of Christianity. Her research has implications for understanding biblical interpretation--especially the history of interpretation--and influencing contemporary study of women and the Bible. Contributions by 130 top scholars introduce foremothers of the faith who address issues of interpretation that continue to be relevant to faith communities today, such as women's roles in the church and synagogue and the idea of religious feminism. Women's interpretations also raise awareness about differences in the ways women and men may read the Scriptures in light of differences in their life experiences. This handbook will prove useful to ministers as well as to students of the Bible, who will be inspired, provoked, and challenged by the women introduced here. The volume will also provide a foundation for further detailed research and analysis. Interpreters include Elizabeth Rice Achtemeier, Saint Birgitta of Sweden, Catherine Mumford Booth, Anne Bradstreet, Catherine of Siena, Clare of Assisi, Egeria, Elizabeth I, Hildegard, Julian of Norwich, Therese of Lisieux, Marcella, Henrietta C. Mears, Florence Nightingale, Phoebe Palmer, Faltonia Betitia Proba, Pandita Ramabai, Christina Georgina Rossetti, Dorothy Leigh Sayers, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Harriet Beecher Stowe, St. Teresa of Avila, Sojourner Truth, and Susanna Wesley.

Patricia Ann Taylor
R582 Discovery Miles 5 820 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

ARRIVING IN AMERICA - DESTINATION THE SOUTH captures Taylor's twenty-five year journey in unearthing the buried history of her maternal and paternal family, trekking the paths of her ancestors, before Emancipation (1863). This journey took her back several generations, from the North, South, East and West regions of Africa, to the thirteen colonies of the United States, and the Southern states of Louisiana and Mississippi. This emotion-filled journey travels down an intricate paper trail of federal, state, and local records combined with a collection of oral interviews that enabled Taylor to methodically place together her family puzzle, in five informative chapters. Lovers of sweeping generational epics will find much to rejoice in here. This is a personal saga, but one played out against the broad canvas of American History. Taylor chronicles the lives of her relatives who were once enslaved. She points out the contributions of European immigrants, with the labor of slaves that made this such a great nation. Taylor discusses intermarriages and intermixing between blacks and Indians, the mulatto children of the master, and how her enslaved family may have obtained their surnames. This book focuses on many unanswered questions, and leave the reader with a burning desire to begin their own journey. ARRIVING IN AMERICA - DESTINATION THE SOUTH is written in a narrative style to inspire, entice and propel readers into the fascinating world of genealogy and historical discoveries.

At The Breakers - A Novel (Paperback): Mary Ann Taylor-Hall At The Breakers - A Novel (Paperback)
Mary Ann Taylor-Hall
R547 Discovery Miles 5 470 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

In her novel At The Breakers, Mary Ann Taylor-Hall presents Jo Sinclair, a longtime single mother of four children. Fleeing an abusive relationship after a shocking attack, Jo finds herself in Sea Cove, New Jersey, in front of The Breakers, a salty old hotel in the process of renovation. Impulsively, she negotiates a job painting the guest rooms and settles in with her youngest child, thirteen-year-old Nick. As each room is transformed under brush and roller, Jo finds a way to renovate herself, reclaiming a promising life derailed by pregnancy and a forced marriage at age fourteen. At The Breakers is a deeply felt and beautifully written novel about forgiveness and reconciliation. In Jo's words, she is "trying to find the right way to live" as a long-suffering woman who is put through the fire and emerges with a chance at a full, rich life for herself and her children, if only she has the faith to take it.

Practical Hints to Young Females - On the Duties of a Wife, a Mother, and a Mistress of a Family (Paperback): Ann Taylor Practical Hints to Young Females - On the Duties of a Wife, a Mother, and a Mistress of a Family (Paperback)
Ann Taylor
R642 Discovery Miles 6 420 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Displaying her intellectual and literary abilities from a young age, 'Mrs Taylor of Ongar' (1757 1830) enjoyed writing all her life. She had eleven children, of whom six (four of them writers) survived to adulthood. Her published works began with advice books for her own daughters, produced when increasing deafness made ordinary conversation difficult for her. Given the difficulty of providing advice equally appropriate to girls at all levels of society, this 1815 work is addressed to 'females in the middle ranks'. It is assumed that a girl's aspiration, as well as her destiny, is to be a wife and mother: conduct towards the husband, and the rearing of children, are of prime importance. But there is also a chapter for the husband, pointing out his reciprocal duties to his wife as an equal partner in their relationship. The book offers fascinating insights into the middle-class ideal of domestic happiness."

This book, published in 1818, follows her earlier works for young women with a guide to conduct and 'reciprocal duties' within the family. Stern warnings and cautionary tales are given to show the importance of duty to and respect for parents by children, but the parental duties of care in rearing and especially in education are emphasised. Early discipline, lovingly applied, is seen as the key to successful parenting, and its absence is deemed disastrous. Like Ann Taylor's Practical Hints to Young Females (also reissued in this series), the book offers fascinating insights into the middle-class ideal of domestic happiness."

The Development of Old English (Paperback): Don Ringe, Ann Taylor The Development of Old English (Paperback)
Don Ringe, Ann Taylor
R1,447 Discovery Miles 14 470 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book, the second volume in A Linguistic History of English, describes the development of Old English from Proto-Germanic. Like Volume I, it is an internal history of the structure of English that combines traditional historical linguistics, modern syntactic theory, the study of languages in contact, and the variationist approach to language change. The first part of the book considers the development of Northwest and West Germanic, and the northern dialects of the latter, with particular reference to phonological and morphological phenomena. Later chapters present a detailed account of changes in the Old English sound system, inflectional system, and syntax. The book aims to make the findings of traditional historical linguistics accessible to scholars and students in other subdisciplines, and also to adopt approaches from contemporary theoretical linguistics in such a way that they are accessible to a wide range of historical linguists.
