Most writing on sociological method has been concerned with how accurate facts can be obtained and how theory can thereby be more rigorously tested. In The Discovery of Grounded Theory, Barney Glaser and Anselm Strauss address the equally Important enterprise of how the discovery of theory from data-systematically obtained and analyzed in social research-can be furthered. The discovery of theory from data-grounded theory-is a major task confronting sociology, for such a theory fits empirical situations, and is understandable to sociologists and laymen alike. Most important, it provides relevant predictions, explanations, interpretations, and applications. In Part I of the book, "Generation Theory by Comparative Analysis," the authors present a strategy whereby sociologists can facilitate the discovery of grounded theory, both substantive and formal. This strategy involves the systematic choice and study of several comparison groups. In Part II, The Flexible Use of Data," the generation of theory from qualitative, especially documentary, and quantitative data Is considered. In Part III, "Implications of Grounded Theory," Glaser and Strauss examine the credibility of grounded theory. The Discovery of Grounded Theory is directed toward improving social scientists' capacity for generating theory that will be relevant to their research. While aimed primarily at sociologists, it will be useful to anyone Interested In studying social phenomena-political, educational, economic, industrial- especially If their studies are based on qualitative data.
A basic introduction to the field, Social Psychology, Eighth Edition takes a critical, symbolic, interactionist approach and helps students understand the very nature of how individuals do things together in today?s society. The book has been significantly revised and takes into consideration a number of the recent turns in the field: the increased sense that American social psychology is deeply embedded in a world culture; that postmodernism has much to offer the study of the social world; and that new theories on sexuality, identity, deviance, and the body provide a fascinating viewpoint on the person within society. Now in paperback to be more affordable to students, Social Psychology, 8th Edition provides a distinctive alternative for the professor of social psychology.

One of the most brilliantly original of American pragmatists,
George Herbert Mead published surprisingly few major papers and not
a single book during his lifetime. Yet his influence on American
sociology and social psychology since World War II has been
exceedingly strong.
The third edition of this best-selling text continues to offer immensely practical advice and technical expertise to aid researchers in making sense of their collected data. Basics of Qualitative Research, Third Edition presents methods that enable researchers to analyze and interpret their data, and ultimately build theory from it. Highly accessible in their approach, authors Juliet Corbin and Anselm Strauss (late of the University of San Francisco and co-creator of grounded theory) provide a step-by-step guide to the research act-- from the formation of the research question through several approaches to coding and analysis, to reporting on the research. Full of definitions and illustrative examples, this highly accessible book concludes with chapters that present criteria for evaluating a study, as well as responses to common questions posed by students of qualitative research. Significantly revised, Basics of Qualitative Research remains a landmark volume in the study of qualitative methods.
Grounded theory methodology and procedure has become one of the most influential modes of carrying out qualitative research when generating theory is a principle aim of the researcher. While there is no shortage of monographs or papers on grounded theory, much of the literature is not accessible for relatively novice researchers. Grounded Theory in Practice, edited by the late Anselm Strauss and Juliet Corbin, presents a series of readings that emphasize different aspects of grounded theory methodology and methods. The selections are written by former students of Strauss and have been chosen for their accessibility and range. Strauss and Corbin provide commentaries for each paper that shed additional light and help make the book even more essential for researchers interested in the application of grounded theory.
