This book examines how the persistent and deepening casualization and precarity of acting work, coupled with market pressures, has affected the ways in which actors are trained in the US and UK. It reviews the existing state of training, looking at various theories of what the actor does, debates about casting, and the impact of reality television and social media. In the increasing effort to find ways to overcome the precarious labour market for actors and other performers, the traditional emphasis on theatrical character has been replaced by the celebration of the persona – a public image of the performer as a personal brand. As a result, a physiocratic elite, that literally incorporates the collective labour of cultural workers into the star or celebrity body, has formed. This book explores how the star or celebrity’s appearance and comportment are positioned as the rule of nature, formed and abiding outside capitalism as a mode of production. This book will be of interest to those studying theatre studies and performance, contemporary stardom and celebrity and the impact of technology on the formation of identity.
Peter Jackson's epic trilogy, the biggest film event of the 21st century, turned the best-selling book of the 20th century into a popular, critical and financial success all over again. This comprehensive collection draws together twenty-five essays on the making, the meaning and the reception of The Lord of the Rings. There is a section on the business of the 'event film', critical chapters on techniques and meanings ranging from music to spirituality, essays on the multimedia products associated with the films, observations on the trilogy's global audience, and an informative dossier of reviews, interviews, production details and box-office returns. More closely integrated, and more attuned to the global marketplace than the older blockbusters, the event film, with its attention-grabbing pitch for the status of news, will be one of the most influential media forms of the coming years. These meticulous essays combine with Peter Jackson's remarkable trilogy to form a unique entry to the study of 21st century media. -- .
Locating Migrating Media details the extent to which media productions, both televisual and cinematic, have sought out new and cheaper shot locations, creative staff, and financing around the world. The book contributes to debates about media globalization, focusing on the local impact of new sites of media production. The book's chapters also question the role that film and television industries and local and regional governments play in broader economic develop and tax incentive schemes. While metaphors of transportation, mobility, fluidity and change continue to serve as key concepts and frames for understanding contemporary media industries, products and processes, the essays in this book look to local spaces, neighborhoods, cultural workers and stories to ground the global that is, to interrogate the effect of media globalization before, during and after film and television shooting and onsite production. By locating migrating media, these chapters seek to determine the political, economic and cultural conditions that produce contemporary forms of televisual and cinematic storytelling, and how these processes affect the inhabitants, the "look" and the very geopolitical future of local communities, neighborhoods, cities and regions. The focus on relocated screen production highlights the act of film- and television-making, both aesthetically and economically. To locate migrating media is therefore to determine the political and cultural economies of globalized sets and stages, be they in new studios or on city streets or, perhaps most importantly, in our imaginations."

Airships played an important role in the US military early in the 20th century. After World War II the United States (US) military's interest in airships waned and airship operations terminated. This was due in part to advances in technology like fixed-wing aircraft. Over the next six decades, military capabilities and technologies continued to advance. These advances make the US military well suited to assist nations once disasters strike. As a result, the US receives numerous requests by foreign countries, federal agencies, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) for US military support during Foreign Humanitarian Assistance (FHA) operations. These operations are often complicated by limited or devastated infrastructure. Even though relief usually arrives within a day or two by air and within a week by ship, poor infrastructure can seriously delay the arrival of relief by any means, creating a gap in humanitarian assistance. Hybrid airships have the ability to surpass this limited infrastructure and deliver vital supplies directly where needed, quicker than before, and at a reduced cost. This research paper will explore the hybrid airship's suitability in support of future FHA operations. Topic: 11Air Force Fellows001 - Hybrid Airships:
Action/Adventure Mainstream Novel Jabe Rainwater never had any intention of battling the entire North American illegal drug trade all by himself. Even further from his mind is how he might bring that whole business to its knees -- until he is targeted for assassination and has to run for his life. Bad Medicine is the story of a reluctant but capable pueblo Indian, an ex-Navy Seal who has been framed and blackmailed into flying illegal drug shipments up from Columbia. The tale is set in modern times in the Yucatan, South Texas and New Mexico. Rainwater has to take back his home pueblo from a clandestine drug ring that is building a landing strip for huge transports on the reservation. In doing so, they are destroying the Indian culture and a way of life that has continued unaltered for 10,000 years. But, in reclaiming his home he has to bring down the mysterious "El Jefe," the man who personally controls the North American illegal narcotics coming up from South America. And, El Jefe is a very high official in the government of the United States. What's worse, he is building a war-chest for the upcoming Presidential election and is favored to win. In order to avert tragedy, his Tribe's as well as his own, Jabe has to employ all the "old-time savvy" he learned from his Grandfather Longrifle when he was a child on the reservation. The action moves like lightning from Texas to a fire-fight in the Yucatan jungle, a confrontation with the U.S. Navy, and then back to New Mexico and an international showdown between Superpowers -- Native American Homeland Security against U.S. nuclear muscle.
In an increasingly global market, the Hollywood film industry is evolving rapidly. Once a stand-alone entity, the Hollywood blockbuster is now integrated more closely than ever with the internet, computer games and news media. This growing synergy has given rise to a new phenomenon: the event film. As a work that transcends the boundaries and expectations of conventional film, Peter Jackson's epic trilogy "The Lord of the Rings" makes a perfect case study for this emerging phenomenon. In a carefully-structured collection of essays, the authors cover every aspect of the event film from its inception through to marketing of the finished product. The financial implications of planning and producing an event film are examined, with clear analyses of tax breaks and marketing strategies. Consideration is also given to the philosophical and social impact of event films, including effects on national identity and tourism in an age of globalization. The twenty-five contributors to this volume come from an eclectic range of backgrounds, but share a perspective grounded in Aotearoa, New Zealand, the land of Middle-earth. Their expertise in fields as diverse as business, communications, geography, music, film and media studies combines to provide a clear understanding of how 'creative industries' will figure in future economics. Studying the event film offers a unique entry point for studying twenty-first century media, and is essential reading for fans of The Lord of the Rings and for anyone interested in contemporary Hollywood as a global industrial and cultural phenomenon.
