How old are the manuscript titles of Latin poems from Antiquity and Late Antiquity? Why were they written, and who created them? With these questions, the author enters virgin philological territory. Her interest is directed at the organisation of ancient texts.She shows that, contrary to conventional wisdom, the headings which subdivide poetry collections and provide preliminary information for the reader were not invented by medieval scribes or early modern editors; their development can in fact be traced back to Classical and Late Antiquity. The headings in Latin poetry collections handed down through medieval mss. The headings in collections of Latin poetry handed down through medieval mss. (incl. Horace, Ovid, Martial, Commodian, Ausonius, Luxurius) are partly authentic, and were partly added in late Classical Antiquity. In their function and linguistic form, they can be compared with book titles and other structural textual devices such as tables of contents and chapter headings. The present study also deals with the development of these devices, which are important for the history of books and of reading habits.
Ennodius lived during the reign of the Ostrogothic King Theoderic. When he wrote his various works he was deacon in Milan, later becoming Bishop of Pavia. This study is an introduction to his life and works, and reveals how the deacon promoted the a ~worldlya (TM) culture of languages and rhetoric. Particular attention is paid to the letters which he sent to secular and ecclesiastic officials (including the Pope), as well as relatives. Among other things, he demanded that the Roman ruling classes crown their privileged position by dedicating themselves to cultural matters.

Musterbeispiele solcher Reden konnten der Unterhaltung eines grAAeren Publikums dienen. In dieser Form rA1/4ckten sie in die NAhe anderer Prunkreden, die z.B. der Feier einer besonderen Gelegenheit oder WA1/4rdigung einer zu ehrenden Person diesen sollten. Der vorliegende Sammelband dokumentiert den aktuellen Forschungsstand zu verschiedenen Mustern der "klangvollen Rede" von der Antike bis zur Neuzeit und ist somit ein Beitrag fA1/4r eine fAcherA1/4bergreifende Diskussion zum Gattungsbegriff der declamatio, aber auch zur Geschichte der Rhetorik insgesamt.
