Masterless Men (1985) examines the nature of vagrancy in Tudor and Stuart England, an issue that many contemporary authorities regarded as their most serious social problems. It looks at why vagrancy was felt to be such a threat to the stability of the country, and the steps the authorities took to overcome the problem.

Urban Resettlements in the Global South - Lived Experiences of Housing and Infrastructure between Displacement and Relocation... Urban Resettlements in the Global South - Lived Experiences of Housing and Infrastructure between Displacement and Relocation (Hardcover)
Raffael Beier, Amandine Spire, Marie Bridonneau
R4,146 Discovery Miles 41 460 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Through the unique conceptualisation of 'urban resettlement', the book is a first attempt to conceptualise 'resettlement' in urban studies not only as an important dimension of ordinary city lives but also as a tool of government (for populations and places). The book will offer an interesting range of contributions combining destruction and production of urban space in the context of urban development. The unique selection of cases studies brings together empirical evidence on resettlement from three different continents (Africa, Asia, Latin America)

Type Tricks: User Design - Your Personal Guide to User Design (Paperback): Sofie Beier Type Tricks: User Design - Your Personal Guide to User Design (Paperback)
Sofie Beier
R398 Discovery Miles 3 980 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Type Tricks: User Design is a dissemination of the author's research into typeface legibility. What to consider when choosing fonts in difficult reading situations including signage, small point sizes, glance-like reading or scanning? But also what to look out for when designing for struggling readers, for example people with low-vision, elderly, children and people with dyslexia. This kind of research is normally communicated in scientific papers, which takes a long time to read and understand. In this book, all findings are presented in an illustrative and easily accessible way. The book has a small amount of text and lots of illustrations presenting more than 140 tips from evidence-based research.

Revolutionary Womanhood - Feminisms, Modernity, and the State in Nasser's Egypt (Hardcover): Laura Bier Revolutionary Womanhood - Feminisms, Modernity, and the State in Nasser's Egypt (Hardcover)
Laura Bier
R2,592 Discovery Miles 25 920 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The first major historical account of gender politics during the Nasser era, "Revolutionary Womanhood" analyzes feminism as a system of ideas and political practices, international in origin but local in iteration. Drawing connections between the secular nationalist projects that emerged in the 1950s and the gender politics of Islamism today, Laura Bier reveals how discussions about education, companionate marriage, and enlightened motherhood, as well as veiling, work, and other means of claiming public space created opportunities to reconsider the relationship between modernity, state feminism, and postcolonial state-building.
Bier highlights attempts by political elites under Nasser to transform Egyptian women into national subjects. These attempts to fashion a "new" yet authentically Egyptian woman both enabled and constrained women's notions of gender, liberation, and agency. Ultimately, Bier challenges the common assumption that these emerging feminisms were somehow not culturally or religiously authentic, and details their lasting impact on Egyptian womanhood today.

Social Thought in England, 1480-1730 - From Body Social to Worldly Wealth (Paperback): A.L. Beier Social Thought in England, 1480-1730 - From Body Social to Worldly Wealth (Paperback)
A.L. Beier
R1,537 Discovery Miles 15 370 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Authorities ranging from philosophers to politicians nowadays question the existence of concepts of society, whether in the present or the past. This book argues that social concepts most definitely existed in late medieval and early modern England, laying the foundations for modern models of society. The book analyzes social paradigms and how they changed in the period. A pervasive medieval model was the "body social," which imagined a society of three estates - the clergy, the nobility, and the commonalty - conjoined by interdependent functions, arranged in static hierarchies based upon birth, and rejecting wealth and championing poverty. Another model the book describes as "social humanist," that fundamentally questioned the body social, advancing merit over birth, mobility over stasis, and wealth over poverty. The theory of the body social was vigorously articulated between the 1480s and the 1550s. Parts of the old metaphor actually survived beyond 1550, but alternative models of social humanist thought challenged the body concept in the period, advancing a novel paradigm of merit, mobility, and wealth. The book's methodology focuses on the intellectual context of a variety of contemporary texts.

The Problem of the Poor in Tudor and Early Stuart England (Hardcover): A.L. Beier The Problem of the Poor in Tudor and Early Stuart England (Hardcover)
A.L. Beier
R4,121 Discovery Miles 41 210 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This pamphlet examines recent research into the poor laws of Tudor and Stuart England. Dr Beier asks the question 'who were the poor?' and in answering it places the 'problem of the poor' in its historical context, examining it in relation to medieval provisions for dealing with poverty. He shows how far legislation was influenced by economic changes, by ideas about poverty and by the interests of the legislators themselves. Dr Beier evaluates the varying interpretations of the poor laws, from those who have seen them as an early 'welfare state' to those who have considered them to be the manifestation of a 'Protestant ethic'. The major poor-law statues are summarized in an appendix, and there is a useful bibliography.

Sufferers and Healers - The Experience of Illness in Seventeenth-Century England (Hardcover): Lucinda McCray Beier Sufferers and Healers - The Experience of Illness in Seventeenth-Century England (Hardcover)
Lucinda McCray Beier
R4,445 Discovery Miles 44 450 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Lucinda McCray Beier's remarkable book, first published in 1987, enters the world of illness in seventeenth-century England, exploring what it was like to be either a sufferer or a healer. A wide spectrum of healers existed, ranging between the housewife, with her simple herbal preparations, local cunning-folk and bonestters, travelling healers, and formally accredited surgeons and physicians. Basing her study upon personal accounts written by sufferers and healers, Beier examines the range of healers and therapies available, describes the disorders people suffered from, and indicates the various ways sufferers dealt with their ailments. She includes several case-studies of healers and sufferers, and looks in detail at the ways in which women's identities and duties were associated with childbirth, illness and healing. This title will be of interest to students of history.

Pedagogy at the End of the World - Weird Pedagogies for Unthought Educational Futures (1st ed. 2023): Jessie L. Beier Pedagogy at the End of the World - Weird Pedagogies for Unthought Educational Futures (1st ed. 2023)
Jessie L. Beier
R4,225 Discovery Miles 42 250 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book probes at the ways in which "end of the world" thinking has come to define and delimit pedagogical approaches in Anthropocene times. Chapters unfold through a series of speculative studies of educational futurity—sustainable futures, energy futures, working futures—each of which is positioned as an experimental site for probing the limits of pedagogical unthinkability so as to speculate, through concept creation, on unthought educational trajectories. Specifically, the book is oriented towards the creation of pedagogical concepts that work to problematize and resituate questions of educational futurity in relation to the planetary realities raised by today’s pressing extinction events. It is from this experimentation that a weird pedagogy emerges, that is, an experimental pedagogical anti-model, a speculative program for the unprogrammable that seeks to counter-actualize potentials of and for unthinking pedagogy at the (so-called) end of the world.

Jessie L. Beier, Jan Jagodzinski
R4,478 Discovery Miles 44 780 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book brings together a collection of multi-disciplinary voices to discuss, debate, and devise a series of ahuman pedagogical proposals that aim to address the challenging ecological, political, social, economic, and aesthetic milieu within which education is situated today. Attending to contemporary calls to decenter all-too-human educational research and practice, while also coming to terms with the limits and inheritances through which such calls are made possible in the first place, this book aims to interrogate, but also invent, what we are calling an ahuman pedagogy. Organized in three main sections — Conjuring an Ahuman Pedagogy, Machinic Re/distributions, and Non-pedagogies for Unthought Futures — this multi-disciplinary experiment in ahuman pedagogies for the age of the Anthropocene offers an experimental – albeit always speculative and incomplete – series of pedagogical proposals that work to unthink and counter-actualize educational futures-as-usual.

Translation and Style (Paperback, 2nd edition): Jean Boase-Beier Translation and Style (Paperback, 2nd edition)
Jean Boase-Beier
R1,206 Discovery Miles 12 060 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Style plays a major role in the translation of literary as well as non-literary texts, and Translation and Style offers an updated survey of this highly interdisciplinary area of translation studies. Jean Boase-Beier examines a variety of disciplines and theoretical approaches including stylistics, literary criticism, and narratology to investigate how we translate style. This revised and expanded edition of the 2006 book Stylistic Approaches to Translation offers new and accessible explanations on recent developments in the field, notably in the areas of Relevance Theory and cognitive stylistics. With many authentic examples to show how style affects translation, this book is an invaluable resource for both students and scholars working in translation studies and comparative literature.

Childhood and the Production of Security (Paperback): J. Marshall Beier Childhood and the Production of Security (Paperback)
J. Marshall Beier
R947 Discovery Miles 9 470 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Responding to security scholars' puzzling dearth of attention to children and childhoods, the contributors to this volume reveal the ways in which they not only are already present in security discourses but are actually indispensable to them and to the political projects they make possible. From zones of conflict to everyday life contexts in the (post)industrial Global North, dominant ideas about childhood work to regulate the constitution of political subjects whilst variously enabling and foreclosing a wide range of political possibilities. Whether on the battlefields of Syria, in the halls of the UN, or the conceptual musings of disciplinary Security Studies, claims about or ostensibly on behalf of children are ubiquitous. Recognizing children as engaged political subjects, however, challenges us to bring a sustained critical gaze to the discursive and semiotic deployments of children and childhood in projects not of their making as well as to the ways in which power circulates through and around them. This book was originally published as a special issue of Critical Studies on Security.

Risk in Extreme Environments - Preparing, Avoiding, Mitigating, and Managing (Hardcover): Vicki M. Bier Risk in Extreme Environments - Preparing, Avoiding, Mitigating, and Managing (Hardcover)
Vicki M. Bier
R4,589 Discovery Miles 45 890 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Risk in Extreme Environments presents a wide-ranging discussion of approaches for assessing and managing extreme risks. Extreme events are not only severe, but also outside the normal range of experience of the system in question, and can include environmental catastrophe; engineering failure; financial or business meltdown; and nuclear or other extreme terrorism. The book focuses on synthesizing research results in a way that provides insights useful to decision makers, and enables them to ask probing questions about the risks faced by their organizations, identify creative solutions, and minimize the neglect of extreme risks that can come from a focus on mundane or ordinary management challenges. The book details case studies on nuclear power, infectious diseases, and global catastrophic risks, in addition to sections on risk assessment, risk management, and risk perceptions. Since effective management benefits from an interdisciplinary perspective, the chapter authors include experts in economics, engineering, geography, law, political science, psychology, sociology, and science in addition to risk analysis. Risk in Extreme Environments is an accessible and valuable resource for risk managers and other decision makers responsible for large complex business and government decisions, while also providing enough detail and references to be informative for risk analysts interested in learning more about technical aspects of the various methods.

William R. Biers
R4,123 Discovery Miles 41 230 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The museums of the world are full of statues and other artefacts of the Greeks and the Romans. All are given a date. But how are these dates arrived at. What is the evidence? This study provides the student with an introduction and explanation of the ways scholars date the archaeological remains of classical antiquity. Specific examples from architecture, sculpture, and painting are presented, and the differnt methods of dating them are explained. These are supplemented with many original photographs and drawings. Old, and not so old problems in chronology are thus investigated and new theories reviewed from a fresh perspective.

The Practices of Literary Translation - Constraints and Creativity (Hardcover): Jean Boase-Beier, Michael Holman The Practices of Literary Translation - Constraints and Creativity (Hardcover)
Jean Boase-Beier, Michael Holman
R4,136 Discovery Miles 41 360 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In their introduction to this collection of essays, the editors argue that constraints can be seen as a source of literary creativity, and given that translation is even more constrained than 'original' literary production, it thus has the potential to be even more creative too. The ten essays that follow outline ways in which translators and translations are constrained by poetic form, personal histories, state control, public morality, and the non-availability of comparable target language subcodes, and how translator creativity may-or may not-overcome these constraints. Topics covered are: Baudelaire's translation practices; bowdlerism in translations of Voltaire, Boccaccio and Shakespeare, among others; Leyris's translations of Gerard Manley Hopkins; ideology in English-Arabic translation; the translation of censored Greek poet Rhea Galanaki; theatre translation; Nabokov and translation; gay translation; Moratin's translation of Hamlet; and state control of translation production in Nazi Germany. The essays are mostly highly readable, and often entertaining.
