The first comprehensive scrutiny of the theories associated with new materialisms including speculative realism, new materialism, Object-oriented ontology and actor-network theory. One of the most influential trends in the humanities and social sciences in the last decades, new materialisms embody a critique of modernity and a pledge to regain immediate reality by focusing on the materiality of the world – human and nonhuman – rather than a post-structuralist focus upon texts. Against New Materialisms examines the theoretical and practical problems connected with discarding modernity and the human subject from a number of interdisciplinary angles: ontology and phenomenology to political theory, mythology and ecology. With contributions from international scholars, including Markus Gabriel, Andrew Cole, and Dipesh Chakrabarty, the essays here challenge the capacity of new materialisms to provide solutions to current international crises, whilst also calling into question what the desire for such theories can tell us about the global situation today.
Passing Through is a memoir from my earliest memories until the present day. I describes how I feel about my adoption, the people who adopted me and my extended family. There are stories and anecdotes about my education, military experience, my career in corporate finance and accounting and my life. Writing this has helped me come to terms with my adoption and make sense out of my life. My goals are that persons who have been adopted will find my stories useful and that corporate finance professionals will enjoy reading some of my deal stories, and that veterans will enjoy my war stories.
Upcoming applications of genetic engineering in farm animals include higher yields, leaner meat, or disease resistance. The proceedings cover an analysis of the state of the art of the technology and its applications, an introduction to the specific application zoopharming (a method to produce biopharmaceuticals in transgenic livestock), including an analysis of the market for biopharmaceuticals. In addition an assessment of ethical aspects of livestock biotechnology and considerations regarding animal welfare implications are covered. The study is addressed to science, industry and politics.
The area of animal counting has historically been the subject of a long and colorful debate, but only more recently have systematic, more rigorous experimental efforts to evaluate numerical abilities in animals been undertaken. This volume contains chapters from investigators in a range of disciplines with interests in comparative cognition. The studies described characterize the emergence of number-related abilities in rats, pigeons, chimpanzees, and humans, bringing together -- for the first time in one volume -- the rich diversity of cognitive capabilities demonstrated throughout many species. The data and theoretical perspectives shared will likely serve to provoke much thought and discussion among comparative psychologists and fuel new research and interest in the field of animal cognition.
The coaching profession is growing and innovating. According to the International Coaching Federation (ICF), coaching earns over $3 Billion per year with over 100,000 practitioners of coaching. This book is for both practitioners and scholars of executive coaching. Coaching is an exciting and powerful skillset that allows individuals to empower others and helps individuals to generate awareness that opens the door for great levels of success. The approach of this book is to look at the theoretical framework of coaching as it applies to the actual practice of coaching others and groups. It is important to ground practice in theory and research to bring together the researched framework to help to inform the approach. There is an old proverb that states: "Theory is when you know everything but nothing works. Practice is when everything works but no one knows why." The approach of this book will enable the student with the theory, the processes and the skills to coach in a way that works and to be able to understand the why behind the success as well as make it replicable.
An Evidence-based Guide to College and University Teaching outlines a definition of "model teaching" based on research evidence and accepted best practices in high education. Teachers at all levels of skill and experience can benefit from clear, objective guidelines for defining and measuring quality teaching. To fulfil this need, this book outlines six fundamental areas of teaching competency-model teaching characteristics-and provides detailed definitions of each characteristic. The authors define these essential characteristics as training, course content, the assessment process, instructional methods, syllabus construction, and the use of student evaluations. This guide outlines through research and supplemental evidence how each characteristic can be used toward tenure, promotion, teaching portfolios, and general professional development. Additional features include a self-assessment tool that corresponds to the model teaching characteristics, case studies illustrating common teaching problems, and lists of "must reads" about college teaching. An Evidence-based Guide to College and University Teaching describes how college faculty from all disciplines and at all levels of their career - from graduate students to late-career faculty - can use the model teaching characteristics to evaluate, guide, and improve their teaching. The book is additionally useful for teachers, trainers, and administrators responsible for promoting excellence in college teaching.

This illustrated practical guide covers the many facets of small animal point of care ultrasound (POCUS) using clinical cases commonly seen in practice. It details specific point of care ultrasound techniques, views, interpretations, pitfalls and knowledge gaps, highlighting the utility initial and serial point of care ultrasound for both diagnostic and patient management purposes. Divided into seven sections, the book covers ultrasound of the pleural space and lungs, heart and abdomen, as well as the Caudal Vena Cava Collapsibility Index (CVC-CI), miscellaneous and advanced cases. Authored by leading authorities in the field, this guide recognizes the strengths of POCUS in screening and monitoring while also highlighting the limitations of using it as a sole diagnostic tool. Focusing on commonly asked questions and applications, the authors take a binary question approach to veterinary POCUS, which has been shown to decrease errors in human POCUS. This full-colour handbook is the ideal reference for small animal and mixed practitioners, including general veterinary practitioners, emergency veterinarians, interns, residents and veterinary students.

The start of a love affair: 'I kicked off my shoes and prepared to climb in stocking feet, aware of an enormous sense of occasion as I laid hands on the rock and stepped up on the first rounded hold. It was not a hard climb but that was unimportant. I felt instinctively at home and at the finish experienced such a surge of happy elation that I knew then I was committed to climbing.' Martin Boysen's passion for crags and mountains springs from his deep love of nature and a strong sense of adventure. From his early days on rock as a Kent schoolboy after the war, he was soon among the most gifted climbers of his or any generation, famed for his silky technique. Boysen made a huge contribution to British rock climbing, especially in North Wales; he discovered Gogarth in the 1960s and climbed some of the best new routes of his era: Nexus on Dinas Mot, The Skull on Cyrn Las and the magisterial Capital Punishment on Ogwen's Suicide Wall. For more than two decades, Boysen was also one of Britain's leading mountaineers. A crucial member of Sir Chris Bonington's team that climbed the South Face of Annapurna in 1970, Boysen was also part of Bonington's second summit team on the South West face of Everest. In 1976 he made the first ascent of Trango Tower with Joe Brown. Along the way, Boysen climbed with some of the most important figures in the history of the sport, not just stars like Bonington and Brown, but those who make climbing so rich and intriguing, like Nea Morin and the brilliant but doomed Gary Hemming. He joined Hamish MacInnes hunting gold in Ecuador, doubled for Clint Eastwood on the North Face of the Eiger and worked on director Fred Zinnemann's last movie. Wry, laconic and self-deprecating, Martin Boysen's Hanging On is an insider's account of British climbing's golden age.

Originating from papers presented at an international colloquium, the 18 articles in this volume reflect the different aspects of modality: general, lexical, temporal and modal. There is no one single definition or methodological approach to the study of modality. This is borne out by the range of these articles, with perspectives extending from different manifestation forms of modality to its different implications or values (alethic, deontic, epistemic, radical, etc.) and from modality in specific genres to contrastive and historical perspectives on the phenomenon.
