Investigations into Calabar beans (the dried ripe seeds of
Physostigma venenosum) and their alkaloidal components compose a
classical scientific journey throughout some one-and-a-half
centuries and not only represent a fascinating aspect of the
history of medicine but which is, moreover, still ongoing at the
forefront of chemical and medical discovery. Those in particular
involving its major such component, l-physostigmine, have led to an
understanding of some of the fundamental mechanisms occurring in
physiology, pharmacology and biochemistry and, either actually or
potentially (by providing a template and thereby acting as a
“lead compoundâ€) have provided a useful treatment for a variety
of neurological disorders associated with irregularities in
cholinergic transmission in which augmentation of cholinergic
activity has proved to be beneficial.
Amusement is an emotion with power. It has the power to make us
laugh, but it can also have a power over us (for good or for ill)
to control our attention or memory. Amusement can empower our
resistance to oppression, or it can itself become an oppressive
force. Our amusement can make others feel shame. Amusement even has
the power to affect (and be affected by) out moral assessment of
others. This volume offers twelve essays from leading and emerging
scholars that explore the moral quagmire that is the emotion of
amusement. It is a collection that considers the moral psychology
of amusement from a range of perspectives, going as far back as
ancient Chinese and Greek philosophy up to the most current
psychological and sociological findings.
This book introduces an approach to active system control design
and development to improve the properties of our technological
systems. It extends concepts of control and data accumulation by
explaining how the system model should be organized to improve the
properties of the system under consideration. The authors define
these properties as reliability, performance and energy-efficiency,
and self-adaption. They describe how they bridge the gap between
data accumulation and analysis in terms of interpolation with the
real physical models when data used for interpretation of the
system conditions. The authors introduce a principle of active
system control and safety - an approach that explains what a model
of a system should have, making computer systems more efficient, a
crucial new concern in application domains such as safety critical,
embedded and low-power autonomous systems like transport,
healthcare, and other dynamic systems with moving substances and
elements. On a theoretical level, this book further extends the
concept of fault tolerance, introducing a system level of design
for improving overall efficiency. On a practical level it
illustrates how active system approach might help our systems be
self-evolving.

The Financial Stability Oversight Council (FSOC) was created by the
Dodd-Frank Act(DFA) in 2010 as part of a comprehensive reform of
banking and securities market regulators. The council is charged
with monitoring systemic risk in the financial system and
coordinating several federal financial regulators. The FSOC is
expected to facilitate communication among existing financial
regulators intending to identify sources of financial instability
that cross agency regulatory jurisdiction, or that reside in gaps
in the financial regulatory framework. This book describes the
mission, membership, and scope of the FSOC with its focus on
establishing a framework for mitigating systemic risk.
