Practical Immunopathology of the Skin (Hardcover, 2002 ed.): Bruce R. Smoller Practical Immunopathology of the Skin (Hardcover, 2002 ed.)
Bruce R. Smoller
R4,239 Discovery Miles 42 390 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Bruce R. Smoller, md, concisely reviews for practitioners and students alike the science of immunopathology, its many basic laboratory tools, and their multiple diagnostic uses in actual clinical case studies. The author presents in an easily digestible form a dictionary of antibody probes, summarizing for each antibody the targeted antigen and its cellular function, its diagnostic utility, and, when available, its sensitivities and specificities for identifying various neoplasms. Real clinical cases from the author's practice demonstrate the benefits of immunopathology.

It is a pleasure to introduce this new book, Clinical and Pathological Aspects of Skin Diseases in Endocrine, Metabolic, Nutritional, and Deposition Disease, edited by two of my friends and respected colleagues, Franco Rongioletti and Bruce R. Smoller. In fact, I was very ent- siastic when I learned that they were preparing this work. Although endocrine, metabolic, w, and deposition diseases are regularly included in general textbooks of dermatology and d- matopathology, one gains the general impression that these topics receive little emphasis and are mainly included for completeness. The prospect of having all of this information in one volume, lovingly described and detailed by experts in the feld, should be of great interest not only to dermatologists, pathologists, and dermatopathologists but also to internists and en- crinologists, who may well gain a different perspective on these disorders. As a derma- pathologist, I am also pleased that this project has been organized and undertaken by two distinguished authorities in cutaneous pathology. This assures a close integration of histo- thology and other laboratory techniques with the clinical aspects of these disorders, which will make it possible - perhaps for the frst time - to view these conditions in a truly comprehensive way. So I invite you, the reader, to open this volume and dig in; be prepared for an eye-catching, intellectually stimulating, and ultimately rewarding experience! Charlottesville, VA James W. Epidermal Cell Tumors: The Basics will serve as an effective and efficient handbook for the student of dermatopathology, and as a practical bench reference for the practicing diagnostician who desires rapid access to criteria that are useful in differentiating histologically similar entities. The reader will be able to focus upon a single histologic observation, i.e., inflammatory conditions without epidermal changes, and use this as a starting point from which to build a differential diagnosis based upon pattern recognition. As each entity is addressed, there will be a concise discussion of the basic clinical findings and epidemiologic associations. This will be followed by a histologic description, highlighting areas that serve to discriminate between the entity under discussion and similar ones. Any immunologic studies that might augment the diagnostic sensitivity or specificity will be discussed. The chapters are thematically based and consist of essential bullet points arranged in organized outlines allowing for easy access and direct comparison between entities. The salient histologic features are depicted with abundant high quality, full-color photomicrographs placed immediately adjacent to the appropriate histologic bullet points. This volume will serve as an effective and efficient handbook for the student of dermatopathology, and as a practical bench reference for the practicing diagnostician who desires rapid access to criteria that are useful in differentiating histologically similar entities. The elaborate pictorial documentation will also enable the book to serve as an atlas of the commonest dermatologic disorders.

In recent years new, obscure or poorly known dermatological disorders have been described and better defined, with emphasis on clinical, histopathological and etiopathogenetic features. Familiarity with these new, emerging or revisited clinical entities is fundamental, and recognizing them with their differential diagnosis has important implications in clinical practice for better patient management. This book offers an in-depth discussion of the clinical and pathologic features of newly described or less well-known and revisited cutaneous disorders. It provides clinical findings, as well as the histologic, immunologic, and molecular features of these diseases in addition to therapeutic notes. The first section of the book covers cutaneous diseases that lack any systemic implications, such as circumscribed palmoplantar hypokeratosis, necrotizing infundibular crystalline folliculitis, and dermal hyperneury, amongst others. The second section offers coverage on cutaneous diseases with systemic implications, such as AESOP-POEMS syndrome, lipoatrophic panniculitis of children, and obesity associated with lymphedematous mucinosis. Each chapter describes an entity, along with an atlas of clinical manifestations that will serve as a "bed-side" clinical reference, followed by a series of photomicrographs depicting the histologic changes. Chapters also offer recent updates on molecular tools helpful in attaining the diagnosis as well as therapeutic recommendations based upon the more recent acquisitions. New and Emerging Entities in Dermatology and Dermatopathology is a must-have reference for the practicing dermatopathologist, internists, general pathologist reviewing skin biopsies, general dermatologists, family practitioners and nurse practitioners, geneticists, immunologists and other health care providers that care for patients with skin conditions.
