What is the point of introducing and executing a policy, programme or project in the lifecycle of an organisation if no forethought has been given to how the success, failure or progressof the exercise will be periodically examined? Both private and public sector organisations need to be responsive to the expectations of their internal and external stakeholders to demonstrate that their performance not only yields the desired results in terms of the "bottom line" but also that those results have integrity, i.e. what was planned is reflected in their processes and in what was eventually achieved. Monitoring and evaluation of policies, programmes and projects examines the key concepts and practices involved in performance tracking and evaluation. Monitoring and evaluation of policies, programmes and projects has drawn from the diverse experiences and expertise of the authors as well as from practical insights gained from practitioners and teaching students at various training courses, nationally and internationally. The balance between theory and practice makes it easy to understand and apply in the workplace, for the achievement of improved results. In this second edition, chapters have been expanded and re-focused to address emerging trends, and new chapters have been added to address institutionalising monitoring and evaluation to make it more participatory. Monitoring and evaluation of policies, programmes and projects remains both a conceptual text and an academic resource for university students, particularly those in management and public administration, as well as a reference work for practitioners and decision-makers in public and private sector organisations.

The need for results delivery in private and public sector organisations has increased, with stakeholders putting substantial pressure on organisations to demonstrate good performance in an environment with limited operational resources. In effect, organisations are being expected to deliver better results with fewer resources. By employing the appropriate tools and techniques of monitoring and evaluation, organisations can be better equipped to ensure that "what is planned" becomes "what is achieved". Monitoring and evaluation of policies, programmes and projects explains key concepts and practices involved in performance tracking and assessment. Monitoring and evaluation of policies, programmes and projects has drawn from the diverse experiences and expertise of the authors in public and private sector management of organisations, as well as practical insights gained from practitioners and students at various training courses, nationally and internationally. The balance between the more abstract, theoretical underpinnings of the subject and its practical aspects makes it easy to follow and incorporate. Contents include the following: Conceptual models of the policy process; the fundamentals and practical steps of policy monitoring and evaluation; the result-based management approach; tools and techniques for monitoring and evaluation; the use of research of policies, programmes and projects.

A nickelodeon screening a Charlie Chaplin silent classic, the downtown arthouse cinemas that made Antonioni and Cassavetes household names, the modern suburban megaplex and its sold-out Friday night blockbuster: "how" American and global audiences have viewed movies is as rich a part of cinematic history as "what" we've seen on the silver screen. "Going to the Movies" considers the implications of this social and cultural history through an analysis of the diverse historical and geographical circumstances in which audiences have viewed American cinema. Featuring a distinguished group of film scholars--including Richard Abel, Annette Kuhn, Jane Gaines, and Thomas Doherty--whose interests range broadly across time and place, this volume analyzes the role of movie theatres in local communities, the links between film and other entertainment media, non-theatrical exhibition, and trends arising from the globalization of audiences. Emphasizing moviegoing outside of the northeastern United States, as well as the complexities of race in relation to cinema attendance, "Going to the Movies "appeals to the global citizen of cinema--locating the moviegoing experience in its appeal to the heart and mind of the audience, whether it's located in a South African shanty town or the screening room of a Hollywood production lot.

In Lamentations, we read of the unbearable grief experienced by a group of believers. Leslie Allen suggests the book can be read as the script of a liturgy performed to help the people of God come to terms with the fall of Jerusalem and the national catastrophe it entailed. It reveals God's sometimes hidden support for those who grieve and for their caregivers.
In this unique commentary on Lamentations, respected Old Testament scholar and volunteer hospital chaplain Leslie Allen appropriates this oft-neglected book of the Bible to deal with a universal issue. Incorporating stories of pastoral encounters with hospital patients, Allen integrates Scripture and pastoral care to present a biblical model for helping those coping with grief. The book includes a foreword by Nicholas Wolterstorff, author of "Lament for a Son."

This collection of essays on the philosophy of religion and its future brings together accomplished thinkers across several related fields, from comparative philosophy to analytic and continental philosophy of religion and beyond. Contributing authors address pressing questions including: Where does philosophy stand in relation to religion and the study of religion in the 21st century? How ought the philosophy of religion to interact with religious studies and theology to make for fruitful interdisciplinary engagement? And what does philosophy uniquely have to offer to the broad discourse on religion in the modern world? Through exploring these questions and more, the authors' goal is not that of meeting the philosophical future, but of forging it. Readers will enter a vivid conversation through engaging essays which demonstrate the importance of disciplinary openness and show that we do not need to sacrifice depth in order to achieve breadth. Modernity and postmodernity come together in a constantly evolving discussion that moves the philosophy of religion forward, while keeping an eye toward the experience accumulated in past centuries. This book will interest students of philosophy, theology, religious studies, and other fields that wonder about the place of philosophy and religion in today's world. It also has much to offer advanced scholars in these fields, through its breadth and forward thinking.

The Industrial Revolution: A Very Short Introduction (Paperback): Robert C. Allen The Industrial Revolution: A Very Short Introduction (Paperback)
Robert C. Allen
R275 R222 Discovery Miles 2 220 Save R53 (19%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

The 'Industrial Revolution' was a pivotal point in British history that occurred between the mid-eighteenth and mid-nineteenth centuries and led to far reaching transformations of society. With the advent of revolutionary manufacturing technology productivity boomed. Machines were used to spin and weave cloth, steam engines were used to provide reliable power, and industry was fed by the construction of the first railways, a great network of arteries feeding the factories. Cities grew as people shifted from agriculture to industry and commerce. Hand in hand with the growth of cities came rising levels of pollution and disease. Many people lost their jobs to the new machinery, whilst working conditions in the factories were grim and pay was low. As the middle classes prospered, social unrest ran through the working classes, and the exploitation of workers led to the growth of trade unions and protest movements. In this Very Short Introduction, Robert C. Allen analyzes the key features of the Industrial Revolution in Britain, and the spread of industrialization to other countries. He considers the factors that combined to enable industrialization at this time, including Britain's position as a global commercial empire, and discusses the changes in technology and business organization, and their impact on different social classes and groups. Introducing the 'winners' and the 'losers' of the Industrial Revolution, he looks at how the changes were reflected in evolving government policies, and what contribution these made to the economic transformation. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly.
