This book exemplifies the high quality of thoughtful discussion
and debate that is possible on the issue of same-sex marriage.
Authors are paired to address and respond to a particular topic,
one in favor of state recognition of same-sex relationships, and
one in favor of limiting state recognition to those relationships
that have been traditionally recognized as marriages.
Proposals to legalize same-sex marriage evoke strong response
from those on both sides of the debate. Much has been written about
the legal policy issues over the legal recognition of same-sex
unions in the United States, yet there has been little dialogue and
exchange between participants in the debate. This book attempts to
open that dialogue, and to exemplify the high quality of thoughtful
discussion and debate that is possible. Authors are paired to
address and respond to a particular topic, one in favor of state
recognition of same-sex relationships and one in favor of limiting
state recognition to those relationships that have been
traditionally recognized as marriages.
This ideal introduction is designed to lead the reader through
the relevant issues, progressing from the general to the
particular. Debates are contextualized, offering comparative,
historical, and family-policy perspectives, asking fundamental
questions such as what is the purpose of a family, and what
interests, if any, that state has in promoting a particular type of
family over others. Issues of jurisprudence and political
philosophy are examined, addressing the public benefits of marriage
and equal treatment before the law, among other items. The
constitutionality of same-sex marriage or domestic partnership
policies is explored. Finally, this book covers the broad
implications when states--such as Vermont--legally recognize
same-sex unions, and the impact of international recognition of
same-sex marriage rights.
This book presents details of Masonic initiation rituals, along
with grips, passwords and regalia. Written in the 19th century,
Duncan's Ritual, as it is known, has been republished numerous
times. It includes the three basic degrees of the Ancient York
Rite, and four additional advanced degrees. There are over a
hundred illustrations; all reproduced here, which show important
details of the rituals, including gestures and symbolic pictures.
Duncan's Ritual is careful to note known variations where they
exist. This book will be of interest to beginning Masons who want a
roadmap of the craft, as well as experienced Masons who need a
review.
Tyler Perry has made over half a billion dollars through the
development of storylines about black women, black communities and
black religion. Yet, a text that responds to his efforts from the
perspective of these groups does not exist.
This edited volume in American constitutionalism places the Supreme
Court's declaration of same-sex marriage rights in U.S. v. Windsor
(2013) and Obergefell v. Hodges (2015) within the context of the
Court's developing understanding of the legal and social status of
marriage and the family. Leading scholars in the fields of
political science, law, and religion examine the roots of the
Court's affirmation of same-sex rights in a number of areas related
to marriage and the family including the right to marry, equality
and happiness in marriage, the right to privacy, freedom of
association, property rights, parental power, and reproductive
rights. Taken together, these essays evaluate the extent to which
the Court's recent marriage rulings both break with and derive from
the competing principles of American Constitutionalism.
This book provides a comprehensive introduction to latent variable
growth curve modeling (LGM) for analyzing repeated measures. It
presents the statistical basis for LGM and its various
methodological extensions, including a number of practical examples
of its use. It is designed to take advantage of the reader's
familiarity with analysis of variance and structural equation
modeling (SEM) in introducing LGM techniques. Sample data, syntax,
input and output, are provided for EQS, Amos, LISREL, and Mplus on
the book's CD. Throughout the book, the authors present a variety
of LGM techniques that are useful for many different research
designs, and numerous figures provide helpful diagrams of the
examples.
Updated throughout, the second edition features three new
chapters--growth modeling with ordered categorical variables,
growth mixture modeling, and pooled interrupted time series LGM
approaches. Following a new organization, the book now covers the
development of the LGM, followed by chapters on multiple-group
issues (analyzing growth in multiple populations, accelerated
designs, and multi-level longitudinal approaches), and then special
topics such as missing data models, LGM power and Monte Carlo
estimation, and latent growth interaction models. The model
specifications previously included in the appendices are now
available on the CD so the reader can more easily adapt the models
to their own research.
This practical guide is ideal for a wide range of social and
behavioral researchers interested in the measurement of change over
time, including social, developmental, organizational, educational,
consumer, personality and clinical psychologists, sociologists, and
quantitativemethodologists, as well as for a text on latent
variable growth curve modeling or as a supplement for a course on
multivariate statistics. A prerequisite of graduate level
statistics is recommended.

As video games have become an important economic and cultural
force, scholars are increasingly trying to better understand the
ways that engagement with games may drive learning, literacy, and
social participation in the twenty-first century. In this book, the
authors consider games and just as importantly, the social
interactions around games, not in terms of how they should be
managed or incorporated into existing educational structures, but
for what they tell us about the forms of learning and literacy that
are already instantiated within the use of these media. To this
end, this book delves deeply into James Paul Gee's (2004)
productive and influential concept of the affinity space - the
physical or virtual locations (or some combination of the two)
where people come together around a shared interest or "affinity."
By explicating how and why engaged fans of digital media do what
they do in online spaces, the authors cast a light, as Gee did, on
the promise of these media and the problems facing current
educational systems.

Modern day Malthusians warn that Malthus will ultimately be right:
the world will be less and less able to feed itself as populations
keep expanding and crop yields seem to have reached a peak. The
authors of this volume believe that this pessimism is misplaced,
and that there is in fact no worldwide food crisis. On the
contrary, they show that the world food situation has improved
dramatically over the past three decades: prices of agricultural
commodities are at their lowest level in history in real terms and
crop output is continuing to rise faster than population. This book
provides a much needed and reasoned view on a subject that is too
often treated emotionally. The important changes in the
international food economy are considered in historical context and
provide a basis for projections to 2010. The situation should
continue to improve and food should become cheaper than it is
today.
