The recognition that cultural learning is an integral part of
foreign language learning is quickly taking hold among language
teachers. This book offers a practical introduction to the issues
by providing descriptions of classroom practice, of curriculum
innovation and of experimental courses. These are accompanied by
chapters on principles of methodology, on problems in assessing
cultural learning and on the implications for teacher education and
society at large. Michael Byram is the author of several books on
language learning and culture, including Cultural Studies in
Foreign Language Education (1988), and Investigating Cultural
Studies in Foreign Language Teaching (1991).
This book focuses on inter- and intracultural differences in
academic writing and ways of understanding. The example of primary
and lower secondary history textbooks has been chosen as a rich
source of cultural viewpoints, and in particular the topic of 'The
Romans' as part of a common European heritage. Textbooks (and their
related curricula) are examined in terms of their writing styles,
the kinds of skills demanded in pupil tasks and overall objectives.
Researchers working in different European countries: Austria,
England, France, Germany (2 different LC$nder), Ireland and Italy
present case-studies of 'The Romans' from their own country. It is
thus possible to track cultural differences closely, and the
intercultural expertise of the team also adds an informing
dimension here. The writing team came together for a conference in
February 2002 at the University of Bath to present and discuss
their research. The book can thus be said to build on an
interactive understanding of inter- and intracultural difference.

"Those who do not learn from the lessons of history are condemned
to repeat them." George Santayana's law of repetitive consequences
is applicable not only in the context of history, but also in
people's lives. It is the underlying theme of the novel Of
Tapestry, Time and Tears. Of Tapestry, Time and Tears is an epic
story of a woman's journey of painful self-discovery and her
participation in the historical events of the twentieth century-the
Depression, World War II, India's Partition, and ultimately, 9/11.
Edwina Kleberg is defined by her German and Irish immigrant parents
and her life in the Texas Hill Country during the Depression and
pre-war years of the 1930's. As a female writer in the
predominately male world of journalism, she is a unique observer to
the myriad of hateful global changes through her work as a war
correspondent in Italy, but meets an Indian soldier who not only
saves her life at the battle of Monte Cassino, but piques her
interest about India's impending break from British rule. Her
ultimate assignment takes her to 1946 India. Against the dramatic
backdrop of India's Independence and the violent cruelties of
Partition, Edwina commits a series of poor choices, including a
tragically poignant romance, all of which transforms her from a
naive egotistical young writer into a mature woman committed to
saving the orphans of Delhi. Upon her return to Texas, she is faced
with personal demons of loneliness, purposelessness, and alcoholism
which miraculously results in her greatest blessing-just as Baba,
her beloved sadhu predicted. Each of the characters woven through
the story mirrors the complexities of life and how we are
permanently affected by the historical era into which we are born.
From Rajil Chaudhary, an emotionally tortured man trapped between
the modern world of the west and the rigidity of India's culture,
Baba, the colorful sadhu, who guides Edwina through her problems
with his rich metaphorical lessons, Nikolai Petrov, the Russian
journalist who surreptitiously struggles against the Cold War,
Gordon Winchcomb, the hard-edged entrepreneur who secretly believes
in the noble magic of Don Quixote to Carl T. Bunch, the Texas
rancher hiding a painful secret behind his wild, alcohol-fueled
antics-all of the characters are fresh, psychologically complex,
and symbolic of life's difficult choices.
Freedom How the word rings People are captives in different ways;
all struggle for freedom. Virginia Carol Morgan was captured by a
daunting physical disability, cerebral palsy. Her speech and motor
abilities were all severely affected. Her loving family, especially
her mother, cared for her in the best way they knew how.
But it was only when Mrs. Morgan became too ill to care for her
that Carol, then in her forties, began the arduous path toward the
freedom of independent living. Carol wrote "My Friends Call Me
Carol" to encourage others to persevere physically and spiritually
against the odds. She tells of the problems she encountered in
hospitals when staff didn't have the time to understand her slurred
speech or to acknowledge Carol's intelligence.
Carol Morgan writes simply and compellingly about the help she
received from her family, from her religion, from other cerebral
palsy patients, and from the staff of programs that encouraged her
to learn the skills she needed to become relatively independent.
The result is a stirring story of determination and sheer grit that
inspires readers to tackle the problems that block the road to
"Freedom House."
Continuous professional development and career progression
within the teaching profession is now highly formalised and
regulated, with clear stages and levels of attainment from initial
teacher training through to full headship.
Written by two leading figures in teacher education, this volume
is designed for ambitious and career-minded teachers whether they
are just setting out or eyeing the next rung on the ladder. Morgan
and Neil pay particular attention to:
* the new post and induction
* personal strategies and collaboration
* middle and senior management
* performance management.
Teachers are faced with a complex set of options and
requirements which are comprehensively explored in this guide.
Further reading lists and stimulating questions at the end of each
chapter help the reader to reflect and go forward in their
development.
