National and European Foreign Policy explores the processes of interaction between the national and the European levels in foreign policy making in European Union states. The volume also assesses the mutual influence which the Member States exert on each other, independent of the EU institutions, thus tracing the extent to which Member State foreign policies are being Europeanized into more convergent, coordinated policies. With chapters examining France, Germany, Italy, UK, Denmark, Greece, Spain, Finland, Poland and Slovenia, the overarching questions the volume addresses centre on the nature of the relationship between the foreign policies of the Member States and 'European' foreign policy. Engaging with 'Europeanization' with theoretical rigour, the contributors to this volume examine the EU's impact on the foreign policies of Member States old and new, the impact of the Member States on the EU's external relations, and the influence of the Member States on each other's foreign policies. Providing interesting detail on changes in foreign policy thinking and national policies using the concept of Europeanization, National and European Foreign Policy will be of interest to students and scholars of European politics and policy formation, foreign policy and International Relations.
This book examines issues of identity; positionality; community; value and relevance, to explore where transnational higher education is headed and what form it may take moving forwards. Transnational higher education has traditionally been viewed through the lens of access. Now, the authors argue, higher education must think more closely about impact and legacy as changing patterns of student recruitment, reduced options for mobility and the need to establish value for money will be at the heart of the next stage of evolution. Drawing on international case studies from Europe, the Middle East and Central Asia, the book outlines the past, present and future of higher education working across national boundaries, and the extent to which this represents the globalisation of the university sector. The book opens with an analysis of the role of the university in both local and global contexts, moving on to explore policy and collaboration and then looking at emerging trends and activity in international higher education. The final section draws directly from students, to give their perspective and understanding of the core themes throughout the book. This volume will have a wide readership amongst higher education scholars, undergraduate and postgraduate students and policy makers.
Using analysis and review of international case studies and emerging models, Lamie and Hill’s edited book explores the very nature of a university and discusses growth, sustainability, and risk as universities navigate their role, value and purpose. As universities continue to emerge from the pandemic, there is new room to critically reflect on the role of higher education, both locally and abroad, and how it impacts a sense of place, identity, and engagement within their communities. The authors contribute their unique perspectives to explore these themes and advise on how a university can best benefit the well-being and development of its students, staff and the local community. To what extent are universities shaped by their environment? How does this provide them a fixed sense of identity or a launching pad to expand beyond their immediate location? Such questions are examined along with the constraints and opportunities open to HEIs as they navigate the waters of international higher education and their impact on communities around the world. This deeply reflective text will appeal to researchers and students in higher education, as well as policymakers interested in the future of international higher education.
This book is the very first to collect together the key official
documents tracing the development of European foreign policy from
the end of the Second World War to the present day. It
contains:
A Nation of Change and Novelty (1990) ranges broadly over the political and literary terrain of the seventeenth century, examining the importance of the English Revolution as a decisive event in English and European history. It emphasises the historical significance of the English Revolution, exploring not only its causes but also its long term consequences, basing both in a broad social context and viewing it as a necessary condition of England's having nurtured the first Industrial Revolution.

There is increasing interest in the Asian arena; both as a home for the delivery of international higher education and as a breeding ground for a new brand of sustainable domestic and international growth. Academics are increasingly turning to Asia and Asian Education in order to better understand and predict the emerging trends of global education and this book will serve to provide a forum for debate of this nature. The book provides an insight into the interplay of Asian and European education, identifies the key areas for further development and firmly grounds the approach as one of conversation and dialogue, rather than one-sided dictation. It also highlights the critical issues within the development of international education, discusses the value and challenges of existing TNE practices as a mechanism to respond to the emerging Asian needs and provides an insight into the future direction of education in the Asian century.
Five years ago observers might have doubted that national foreign policies would continue to be of importance: it seemed inevitable that collective European positions were becoming ever more common and effective. Now the pendulum has swung back with a vengeance. The European responses to the prospect of war with Iraq in 1990-91, and to the war in the Balkans, have made what happens in the national capitals seem divisive. This work is a timely survey of the interplay between the European Union's Common Foreign and Security Policy and the long-established national foreign policies of the Union's member-states. The book contains a chapter on each country in the Union as well as a chapter on the United States in its role as the "13th seat at the table". There is also a chapter on the European Commission, whose role in the external relations of the Community grew steadily during the 1980s.
Over the last thirty years, practitioners of international
relations have shown increasing interest in the academic study of
the subject and likewise academics have been drawn more and more
into involvement in government policy making.

This book explores the impacts of transnational education (TNE) from the perspectives of institutions and countries that primarily act as hosts. The authors describe and analyse TNE across a wide geographical area comprised of both established and emerging TNE host countries, from Europe to Southeast Asia to less-discussed countries such as Nepal and Uzbekistan. Complementing the 2018 volume Exporting Transnational Education: Institutional Practice, Policy and National Goals, the book is organised into three principal themes: the impacts of TNE on capacity building, the sustainability of such developments, and the impacts on the student experience in host countries. As TNE is a dynamic and fast-moving area of international higher education, this book will appeal to scholars and administrators of international and transnational education.
First published in 1961, this graphic depiction of a turbulent era in English history examines ordinary men and women as well as kings and queens. The author argues that the Civil War was driven by the conflict between the old feudal lites and the growing merchant classes. Society and the State are dissected alongside other aspects such as Protestantism and the rise of capitalism and the questioning of hitherto unassailable authorities such as the church and the law.

In this, the last book published during his lifetime, renowned historian of the English Revolution Christopher Hill uses the literary culture of the seventeenth century to explore the immense social changes of the period as well as the expressions of liberty, the law and the hero-worship of the outlaw defiance. As well as chapters on gypsies and vagabonds, Hill analyzes class, religion and the shift away from the importance of the church after the Reformation. Liberty against the Law is a late classic of Hill's work and essential reading for anyone interested in the history and politics of the seventeenth-century.

English summary: This volume documents the seventh theological conference as part of the Meissen Process involving the Church of England and the Evangelical Church in Germany. In this conference which was held in Salisbury/England in 2011, the theological work, to which both churches have pledged their efforts, focused on the missionary dimension of ecclesiology with the goal of finding common approaches for Christian witness in Europe's process of transformation. The twelve essays representing academia and church leadership consider the meaning of mission in Anglican and Protestant ecclesiology and introduce current debates and new models for missionary work in both churches. From a historical perspective, the essays recall main themes within the history of mission from early Christianity to late antiquity. They also present basic reflections concerning the theology of mission in the context of the ecumenical movement. This book draws on real-world case studies to highlight key challenges and support the crafting of relevant and contextual responses. There is increasing pressure on academics and teaching staff to provide high-quality teaching and delivery in English. More than an edited volume, it offers a true dialogue on emerging trends in EMI, making it of considerable value to practitioners, students and policymakers alike. By analyzing established and emerging models of EMI delivery, the book presents a review and assessment of how universities can respond to student expectations and build internal capacities so as to offer better learning experiences. |
