For decades now, mainstream economics has lost contact with
reality. As early as 1974, the great Robert Solow made the
outlandish claim that 'the world can, in effect, get along without
natural resources'. The important thing, they said, was growth.
Growth would fix everything. Meanwhile, scientists were busy
confirming the direct link between increasing economic activity and
ecological upheaval. It didn't have to happen this way. Over the
past century, economists have created a number of powerful ways to
examine and predict the world, and they did not always consider the
environment outside the scope of their inquiry. In fact, in 1931
Harold Hotelling published a vitally important article which might
have changed history if only anyone had understood it. Through the
long battle to put a number on our world, Jones examines the series
of choices made by the dismal science over the last two centuries,
and lights the path for the new economic ideas we will need as we
step into the Anthropocene.
This book, featuring a truly interdisciplinary approach, provides
an overview of cutting-edge mathematical theories and techniques
that promise to play a central role in climate science. It brings
together some of the most interesting overview lectures given by
the invited speakers at an important workshop held in Rome in 2013
as a part of MPE2013 ("Mathematics of Planet Earth 2013"). The aim
of the workshop was to foster the interaction between climate
scientists and mathematicians active in various fields linked to
climate sciences, such as dynamical systems, partial differential
equations, control theory, stochastic systems, and numerical
analysis. Mathematics and statistics already play a central role in
this area. Likewise, computer science must have a say in the
efforts to simulate the Earth's environment on the unprecedented
scale of petabytes. In the context of such complexity, new
mathematical tools are needed to organize and simplify the
approach. The growing importance of data assimilation techniques
for climate modeling is amply illustrated in this volume, which
also identifies important future challenges.
This book posits the idea that networked learning is the one new
paradigm in learning theory that has resulted from the introduction
of digital and networked technologies. It sets out, in a single
volume, a critical review of the main ideas and then articulates
the case for adopting a networked learning perspective in a variety
of educational settings. This book fills a gap in the literature on
networked learning. Although there are several edited volumes in
the field there is no other monograph makes the academic case and
provides the academic context for networked learning. This volume
accomplishes three main goals. First, it assists researchers and
practitioners in acquainting themselves with the field. Second, it

mass spectrometry, and metalloprotein techniques, and the third

Techniques is intended to provide a basic understand ing for the
biochemist or biologist who needs to collaborate with spe cialists
in applying the techniques of modern physical chemistry to
biological macromolecules. The methods treated in this book fall
into four groups. Part One covers microscopy, which aims to
visualize individual molecules or complexes of several molecules.
Electron microscopy is the more familiar of these, while scanning
tunneling microscopy is a new and rapidly developing tool. Methods
for determining the shapes and sizes of molecules in solution are
described in Part Two, which includes chapters on X-ray and neutron

The three volumes in Methods in Molecular Biology covering Physical
Methods of Analysis (vol. 1, Spectroscopic Methods and Analyses:
NMR, Mass Spectrometry, and Metalloprotein Techniques; vol. 2,
Optical Spectroscopy and Macroscopic Techniques; vol. 3, Cryst-
lographic Methods and Techniques) differ from others in this series
in several ways. Each volume covers a group of techniques for the
char- terization of biological molecules and their interactions
that involve the application of modern techniques of physical
chemistry. These techniques by and large do not lend themselves to
the "hands-on" approach and cannot usually be carried out by the
molecular biologist alone, but most often require collaboration
with a specialist. The biologist or biochemist contemplating such a
collaboration may feel somewhat at a distance from the experimental
work and further isolated by the use of the jargons of analytical
and physical chemistry. Physical methods have been used in
molecular biology from the earliest days, from simple applications
of optical spectroscopy to the complexity of X-ray crystallography,
and the full range of these me- ods will be covered over the three
