Drawing on extensive archival research and interviews, this book
delves into the rich world of Ghanaian fashion, demonstrating how,
over time, local dress styles and materials have been fused with
global trends to create innovative, high fashion garments that
reflect a distinctly Ghanaian cosmopolitanism. Ghana has a complex
and diverse fashion culture which was in evidence before
independence in 1957 and has continued to grow in reputation in the
postcolonial period. In this book, Christopher Richards reflects on
the contributions of the country's female fashion designers, who
have employed fashion to innovate existing, culturally relevant
dress styles, challenge gendered forms of dress, and make bold
statements regarding women's sexuality. Treated as artworks, the
book examines specific garments to illustrate the inherent
complexity of their design and how fashion is often embedded with a
blending of personal histories, cultural practices and global
inspirations. Reflecting in particular on the works of Laura
Quartey, Letitia Obeng, Juliana Kweifio-Okai, Beatrice Arthur and
Aisha Ayensu, this book makes an important and timely contribution
to art history, fashion studies, anthropology, history, women's
studies and African Studies.
Arts Collinwood is pleased to present, Das Wird Sich Alles Finden
everything will turn out alright] an exhibition of international
artists. The German title speaks to the origin of the exhibit. A
group of international artists were selected to take part in an
exhibition called The Berlin Project. The original call out stated:
'The aim of this exhibition is selecting artists who dedicate their
time to create original works who distinguish themselves through
technical quality, innovation and sensibility toward the detail.'
Weeks went by and the organizers disappeared without contacting the
artists or returning their fee. The artists were left without a
show. Frustrated but not defeated, the artists organized themselves
and set up a touring exhibition as a way of making things right.
The title translates as 'Everything Will Turn Out Alright', a
sentiment that runs though the project. A curatorial method of
picking up these disparate pieces has allowed the exhibition to
come together in new and unexpected ways that examine despondency,
closure, hope, and accomplishment. The artists included are: Kayde
Anobile, Patricia Casey, Yoonsuk Choi, Amanda Crozat, Niall Dooley,
Lesley Guy, Mark Keffer, Robert Lang, Krystel Marios, Jonathan
McFadden, Haroob Mullick, Lydia Panas, Julia Schmid, Mercedes
Teixido, Joshua Thompson and Margeret Withers.
Mieczkowski, Ernst Benkert, and Francis Hewitt formed the Anonima
Group in the 1960s, and together they developed strict methods of
creation and exploration of visual perception that continued to
inform Mieczkowski's work long after the group dissolved. The
exhibition will focus on the black and white works from this period
and Mieczkowski's return to this theme throughout his career.
Viewing his constructions, sculpture, and later paintings under the
microscope of a singular palette will allow for a uniformed
examination of his creative process. It will allow new discoveries
into how his thought process progressed, yet remained fixated on
geometric abstraction. The exhibition will introduce Mieczkowski's
color works as well, relating them to his black and white
compositions.
