I have always felt the hand of God. In 1991, God said, "You have a
book to write." For years, my flesh wrestled with the idea. In
1999, God sent me on a spiritual journey to Hawaii, "my heaven on
earth." In heaven, I walked and talked with God. The beautiful
rainbows reminded me of His promise and He reminded me of the book
I had to write. Uncertain what to write, I acknowledged Him and He
directed my path. I vividly recalled my childhood memories, so I
entitled the first attempt, "The Fruits of My Labor." However, my
faith was immediately tested when a thief burglarized my home and
stole the laptop that housed the book. The devil is a liar. God
said, "Someone stole your laptop, not your memories." I humbled
myself, started over and patiently waited on God. Through many
trials and tribulations, He never withdrew His hand. In 2007,
sixteen years after God said I had a book to write, I couldn't
sleep for "7" days straight. The last day of my test measured
perseverance. I experienced "hell on earth" like never before. I
called saints and family members to pray and fast with me until the
midnight hour. The battle lasted all day, and before midnight my
elder and minister came by and prayed with me. I slept that night.
The next morning God said, "Write" and I willingly obeyed His
voice. He revealed my past, present and future as I birthed the 7
Days in the Fire chapters in one day. Biblically the fire
symbolizes judgment; the number "7" speaks of completion,
finishing, and rest. My soul is at rest. God's outstretched hand
brought me out of the fire as pure gold.
This is a book about comparison in linguistics in general, rather
than "contrastive analysis" as a distinct branch of linguistics. It
addresses the question "Does the analytical apparatus used by
linguists allow comparisons to be made across languages?" Four
major domains are considered in turn: derivational morphology,
syntax, semantics & pragmatics, and discourse. Contributions
cover a broad spectrum of linguistic disciplines, ranging from
contrastive linguistics and linguistic typology to translation
studies and historical linguistics.

Distribution management is the first of a quintet of books
specially written for South African undergraduate marketing
students. The other books in the series deal with marketing
research, production management, pricing and integrated marketing
communications. The objective of the series is to place specific
marketing topics in perspective and it is the indigenous flavour of
examples and case studies that localise the content and enhance the
discussions. Distribution management was written to fulfil the
requirements of the modular system that is used by all the South
African universities. The text is easy to read and embraces the
full spectrum of distribution topics that are covered in
undergraduate studies at tertiary level.
Counterfactual reasoning is the process of evaluating conditional
claims about alternate possibilities and their consequences (i.e.,
"What If " statements). These alternatives can be either past
possibilities (e.g., "If the United States had not abolished the
Iraqi army in 2003, then the Iraqi insurgency would have been
significantly smaller in 2005") or future possibilities (e.g., "If
Iran had nuclear weapons, then it would provide this technology to
Hezbollah"). Counterfactuals are essential to intelligence analysis
because they are implicit in all strategic assessments. For, any
proposal about the appropriate response to a particular situation
(past or future) assumes that certain things would or might occur
if that response were made. However, at present, there is no
comprehensive system of counterfactual reasoning to establish if
these underlying assumptions are plausible. Such a system would
have immense potential for analytic transformation as it could
unite (or replace) a series of extant techniques of assessing
alternate possibilities, such as "What If " Analysis, "High
Impact/Low Probability" Analysis, and "Alternate Futures/Scenario"
Analysis. And, ultimately, counterfactual reasoning represents the
most ideal way to analyze possibilities, for it considers what
would or might happen if the possibility were to occur, rather than
attempting to determine if the possibility itself is probable. The
process of counterfactual reasoning has three stages. The first two
of these are somewhat counterintuitive and are easily ignored by
analysts. But, they are essential to structuring one's
counterfactual reasoning properly. First, one must establish the
particular way in which the alternate possibility comes to be
(i.e., develop its "back-story"). Second, one must evaluate the
events that occur between the time of the alternate possibility and
the time for which one is considering its consequences. And third,
one must examine the possible consequences of the alternate
possibility's back-story and the events that follow it. In doing
so, an analyst must connect their conclusion to the specific type
of strategic assessment the counterfactual will be used to support:
decision making under risk or decision making under uncertainty.

In The Grand Scribe's Records: Volume X, readers can follow Ssu-ma
Qian's depiction of the later years of the reign of Emperor Wu of
the Han (r. 140-87 BC). The volume begins with four chapters
describing the Han's attempts to subdue states north, east, south
and west of the empire. The subsequent long biography of Ssu-ma
Hsiang-ju (179-117) presents one of the era's major literary
figures who came to oppose the Emperor's expensive military
campaigns against these states. It is followed by an equally
extended portrayal of Liu An (d. 122), King of Huai-nan, who was
seen as an internal threat and forced to commit suicide. The final
chapters recount narratives of the ideal officials (all predating
the Han) and the Confucians the Emperor championed.
