They weren't lying when they said the elevator business has its ups and downs-just ask Dean Ireland. He keeps getting the shaft, and though he's only looking for an easy buck and place to get some studying done when he takes a job as an elevator operator in Greenwich Village, before long he's unwittingly drawn into the complex personal lives of the strange people who live there. Whether it's the art-house snobs on four, the drunken super in a stupor, the herb-smoking doctor, the long-ago famous French singer, or the rent-controlled but controlling old women on six, Dean can't help becoming involved in their lives, lies and secrets, as well as those of some who live outside the building-Ricky, a counterfeit goods dealer who works on Eighth Street, and Nikki, a mysterious, exotic damsel whose disarming good looks mask a dark secret. With its irreverent tone and sharp, witty dialogue, Slidebox is the kind of novel you read in one sitting, and leaves you captivated long afterward.
"Gloryheads" is the alternately funny and tragic portrait of a smart-but-directionless young man named Dean Ireland and the band of beautiful losers he roams the streets of South Brooklyn with nightly; looking for love, sex, drugs...any momentary connection to be found. When Dean's girlfriend abruptly walks out, it triggers a series of upheavals that propel him headlong into a life he could've scarcely imagined just a few months before. Along with with his ever-present friend Lucas, Dean is ensnared by a world of street drugs and petty crime. Burning the candle at both ends while his life crashes down around him, Dean seeks solace in the arms of Echo, the girl he's convinced was sent from Heaven to save him. But she doesn't know his little secret. And he doesn't know her's. So it's only a matter of time before the drugs, the crime, and the lies conjure up a tsunami of bad karma that not only threatens to destroy the lives of Dean and those around him...it just might kill them altogether.
