Science and Technology Policy in Interdependent Economies (Hardcover, 1994 ed.): David C. Mowery Science and Technology Policy in Interdependent Economies (Hardcover, 1994 ed.)
David C. Mowery
R4,614 Discovery Miles 46 140 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Economic policy debates have devoted increasing attention to the design and implementation of policies to aid the growth of high-technology firms and industries. In the United States this focus on technology policy' has been influenced by similar debates and policy experiments in other industrial economies, notably Japan and Western Europe. The domestic U.S. debate over support for technology development and national competitiveness has been hampered by two major conceptual flaws -- the demand for immediate economic results from basic research and considering national technology policies independent of developments in the international economy. This volume addresses these deficiencies in the analysis of technology policy by examining a number of issues faced by managers and public officials in industrial and industrializing economies that are now linked closely through international flows of goods, capital, and technology. The book lays out an analytical framework for the study of national policies towards technology and science. In addition, the book addresses the complex issues raised by interdependence among the public and private institutions governing the creation, commercialization, and adoption of new technology in different national economies. Finally, the book reviews the development of two global high-technology industries: aerospace and semiconductor components.

Innovation, Technology and Economic Change (Hardcover): Jan Fagerberg, David C. Mowery Innovation, Technology and Economic Change (Hardcover)
Jan Fagerberg, David C. Mowery
R12,716 Discovery Miles 127 160 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Several attempts have been made since the 1970s to collect key scholarly papers and document the progress of the field of innovation studies. The collection of papers covered by this new research review, most of which were published after the turn of the millennium, stands on the shoulders of these earlier volumes and seeks to provide a broad overview of recent progress in research on innovation and economic change. In their choice of papers, the editors address the characteristics of the field of innovation studies and its relationship to other areas of (social) science: innovation in firms; factors influencing firms' innovation performance; innovation systems; innovation and economic "catch-up" and, finally, policy issues for innovation.

This book describes and analyzes how seven major high-tech industries evolved in the United States, Japan, and Western Europe. The industries covered are machine tools, organic chemical products, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, computers, semiconductors, and software. In each of these industries, firms located in one or a very few countries became the clear technological and commercial leaders. In a number of cases, the locus of leadership changed, sometimes more than once, over the course of the histories studied. The focus of the book is on the key factors that supported the emergence of national leadership in each industry, and the reasons behind the shifts when they occurred. Special attention is given to the national policies that helped to create or sustain industrial leadership.

Public Universities and Regional Growth - Insights from the University of California (Paperback): Martin Kenney, David C. Mowery Public Universities and Regional Growth - Insights from the University of California (Paperback)
Martin Kenney, David C. Mowery
R845 Discovery Miles 8 450 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"Public Universities and Regional Growth" examines evolutions in research and innovation at six University of California campuses. Each chapter presents a deep, historical analysis that traces the dynamic interaction between particular campuses and regional firms in industries that range from biotechnology, scientific instruments, and semiconductors, to software, wine, and wireless technologies.
The book provides a uniquely comprehensive and cohesive look at the University of California's complex relationships with regional entrepreneurs. As a leading public institution, the UC is an examplar for other institutions of higher education at a time when the potential and value of these universities is under scrutiny. Any yet, by recent accounts, public research universities performed nearly 70% of all academic research and approximately 60% of federally funded R&D in the United States. Thoughtful and distinctive, "Public Universities and Regional Growth" illustrates the potential for universities to drive knowledge-based growth while revealing the California system as a uniquely powerful engine for innovation across its home state.

"This book addresses an important and timely topic which has garnered substantial interest among policymakers, academic analysts, and the broader scientific and technical community. It reflects over a decade of careful qualitative and quantitative research by these authors. This collection brings together their most interesting work in this important area." --Scott Stern, Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University
"This clear and succinct volume convincingly overturns the conventional wisdom about university-industry relations in science and technology. The authors muster extensive historical and contemporary empirical evidence to build a robust and nuanced conception of the transfer of knowledge between the two sectors. This work warrants close attention from academic administrators, research managers, and public policy-makers in the U.S. and abroad."--David M. Hart, Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University

The first digital electronic computer, the ENIAC, was over 100 feet long, with 18,000 simultaneously functioning vacuum tubes. Now virtually every business and home in America has its own compact PC. In 1903 the Wright brothers' airplane, held together with baling wire and glue, traveled a couple hundred yards. Today fleets of streamlined jets transport millions of people per day to cities worldwide. Between discovery and application, between invention and widespread use, there is a world of innovation, of tinkering and improvements and adaptations. This is the world David Mowery and Nathan Rosenberg map out in Paths of Innovation, a tour of the intersecting routes of the technological.

Technology and the Pursuit of Economic Growth (Paperback, Revised): David C. Mowery, Nathan Rosenberg Technology and the Pursuit of Economic Growth (Paperback, Revised)
David C. Mowery, Nathan Rosenberg
R1,248 Discovery Miles 12 480 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Technology's contribution to economic growth and competitiveness has been the subject of vigorous debate in recent years. This book demonstrates the importance of a historical perspective in understanding the role of technological innovation in the economy. The authors examine key episodes and institutions in the development of the U.S. research system and in the development of the research systems of other industrial economies. They argue that the large potential contributions of economics to the understanding of technology and economic growth have been constrained by the narrow theoretical framework employed within neoclassical economies. A richer framework, they believe, will support a more fruitful dialogue among economists, policymakers, and managers on the organization of public and private institutions for innovation. David Mowery is Associate Professor of Business and Public Policy at the School of Business Administration, University of California, Berkeley. Nathan S. Rosenberg is Fairleigh Dickinson Professor of Economics at Stanford University. He is the author of Inside the Black Box: Technology and Economics (CUP, 1983).

Since the early 1980s, universities in the United States have greatly expanded their patenting and licensing activities. The Congressional Joint Economic Committee, among other authorities, have argued that this surge contributed to the economic boom of the 1990s. And, many observers have attributed this trend to the Bayh-Dole Act of 1980. Using quantitative analysis and detailed case studies, this book tests that conventional wisdom and assesses the effects of the Act, examining the diverse channels through which commercialization has occurred over the 20th century and since the passage of the Act.

R2,112 Discovery Miles 21 120 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Although the computer software industry is growing rapidly and is of increasing importance for the international competitiveness of other high-technology industries and national economies, it has received surprisingly little attention from scholars. Data on employment, sales, and industry structure for the software industry are rare, and public statistical agencies do not provide reliable, internationally comparable data.
The International Computer Software Industry offers the first comprehensive, cross-national analysis of the origins, structure, and competitive strengths of the U.S., Japanese, British, Western European, and Russian computer software industries. In addition to chapters dealing with each of these industries, the volume examines in detail the role of U.S. government policy in supporting the emergence of the U.S. software industry, the interaction between software and hardware in technology commercialization, and the changing structure and influence of intellectual property rights within the industry.
This edited volume contains research conducted by a group of international experts in the software industry. It will be essential reading for managers and analysts in the software industry, along with scholars and students of technology and of the computer software industry.

The Oxford Handbook of Innovation (Hardcover): Jan Fagerberg, David C. Mowery, Richard R. Nelson The Oxford Handbook of Innovation (Hardcover)
Jan Fagerberg, David C. Mowery, Richard R. Nelson
R6,745 Discovery Miles 67 450 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This handbook looks to provide academics and students with a comprehensive and holistic understanding of the phenomenon of innovation.
Innovation spans a number of fields within the social sciences and humanities: Management, Economics, Geography, Sociology, Politics, Psychology, and History. Consequently, the rapidly increasing body of literature on innovation is characterized by a multitude of perspectives based on, or cutting across, existing disciplines and specializations. Scholars of innovation can come from such diverse starting points that much of this literature can be missed, and so constructive dialogues missed.
The editors of The Oxford Handbook of Innovation have carefully selected and designed twenty-one contributions from leading academic experts within their particular field, each focusing on a specific aspect of innovation. These have been organized into four main sections, the first of which looks at the creation of innovations, with particular focus on firms and networks. Section Two provides an account of the wider systematic setting influencing innovation and the role of institutions and organizations in this context. Section Three explores some of the diversity in the working of innovation over time and across different sectors of the economy, and Section Four focuses on the consequences of innovation with respect to economic growth, international competitiveness, and employment.
An introductory overview, concluding remarks, and guide to further reading for each chapter, make this handbook a key introduction and vital reference work for researchers, academics, and advanced students of innovation.
