Divided into three parts - Rationale and Extent of Agricultural
Diversification, Nature and Problems of Agricultural
Diversification, and Food and Livelihood Security through
Agricultural Diversification, this edited book examines various
aspects of agricultural diversification in Eastern India. In recent
years, Indian agriculture has been diversifying from cereals to
high-value crops and livestock products in accordance with the
changing consumption patterns. As such, it faces the challenges of
a new economic regime, besides the usual problems of rising
population, unemployment and poverty, declining investments in the
agriculture sector and degradation of natural resources. These
issues are discussed in the book in light of the significant
transformation in the economic structure of the Indian economy from
agriculture to non-agriculture (industry and services) and changing
cropping pattern from cereals to non-cereals, in accordance with
the changing consumption pattern. The book would be of interest to
teachers, researchers, policymakers, students and general readers
having an interest in agricultural development in India.

The book presents an analysis of the development, progress and
problem of West Bengal agriculture and the role of public action in
address that problem. The analysis is based on a broad view of
agricultural development on the WTO regime, focusing on constraints
to meet the requirement of obligations. West Bengal's success in
different policy periods since independence has been quite limited.
Recent diagnoses of this failure of policy have concentrated on the
counterproductive role of government regulation, and on the need
for economic incentives to accelerate the growth of agriculture.
The book argues that an assessment of West Bengal's failure to
eliminate the basic problems has to go beyond this limited focus,
and to take note of the role played in that failure by inadequate
public involvement in the promotion of basic infrastructure. Even
the fostering of fast and participatory agricultural growth
requires some basic infrastructural change, which is not addressed
by liberalization and economic incentives. Following on this, the
book considers the scope for public action to address these
problems and achieve a transformation of policy priorities.
This book provides an assorted set of reflections/lessons from the
"trenches" of Lean service and brings to fore leadership
challenges, new tools, and the known-unknowns (insights that very
few know but many in journey of Lean transformation need to know).
Lean has the ability to address a wide range of problems faced by
service companies, such as: complexity reduction, sales force
productivity enhancement, operations risk control, cost leadership,
combining scale with flexibility, service excellence and improving
employee morale and involvement. Many of the principles discussed
in the book are based on the author's first-hand experience in Lean
implementation.
