Joseph 1. Kockelmans Pennsylvania State University In July of 1999, Prof. Dr. Thomas M. Seebohm turned 65 years old, and thus en tered mandatory retirement. His friends, colleagues, and former students thought that it would be fitting to celebrate the event of his retirement with a volume of essays in his honor, in order to render homage to a great human being, an outstanding and dedicated teacher, a highly regarded philosopher and scholar, but above all a dear friend and colleague. When the editors thought about a unifying theme for the anthology, they finally settled on the research interests of Professor Seebohm; in their view the vast do main of his competence and interests would leave all participants the freedom to select a topic of their own choice that would nonetheless lie within this large realm as well as within the area of their own research interests. Professor Seebohm's research interests encompass work in Phenomenology, Hermeneutics, German Idealism (Kant in particular), History of Philosophy, Phi losophy of the formal sciences (of Logic in particular), Philosophy of History, Methodology and Philosophy of the Human Sciences, (including Psychology and Sociology), History of 19th Century British Empiricism (Mill), American Pragma tism, Analytic Philosophy, Philosophy of Law and Practical Philosophy, the devel opment of the history of philosophy in Eastern Europe, especially in the Middle Ages, but also in the nineteenth century."
Landscape modelling integrates the differing perspectives of the many disciplines that deal with the landscape. It is motivated not only by the desire for scientific understanding, but also by the real-time demands of 21st century postindustrial society, which include the twin imperatives of stabilizing damaged ecosystems on the one hand, and finding effective ways to use the landscape on the other. The discipline has the specific goal of designing and assessing future scenarios of landscape development, while not losing sight of its past history, both ecological and socio-cultural. This book encompasses the interrelated disciplines of geography, landscape ecology and geoinformatics, and by drawing on their theories and methodologies introduces the concept of a living landscape with human action an inseparable part of its evolution. It offers researchers and decision-makers a number of ideas on how our landscape can best be utilized. The content reflects the need for sustainable landscape development, at the same time as considering long-term continuity as a major condition which enables us to maintain the diversity and multifunctionality of landscapes at regional and macro-regional scales. Employing advanced terminology and methods, this book provides specific results especially for scientists and landscape professionals.
Few deny that in the Muslim world religion and law are intimately
linked. However, local legal realities mean that Islamic law is
often pushed out of the picture by customary law, which is usually
tribal, and by state law. The three may at times produce similar or
identical rulings and it is thus often difficult to identify which
is at work under such circumstances. When the different legal
systems clash, problems start to emerge. "Shattering Tradition"
concentrates on customary law, which is the least investigated of
the three and considers the ruptures and potential for conflict in
Muslim law as well as the continuities and interactions. This
groundbreaking series of empirical case studies investigates the
varying ways in which different forms of law interrelate and it
analyzes how the tensions between them are resolved in local
settings.
The Oxford Handbook of Deaf Studies in Literacy brings together state-of-the-art research on literacy learning among deaf and hard of hearing learners (DHH). With contributions from experts in the field, this volume covers topics such as the importance of language and cognition, phonological or orthographic awareness, morphosyntactic and vocabulary understanding, reading comprehension and classroom engagement, written language, and learning among challenged populations. Avoiding sweeping generalizations about DHH readers that overlook varied experiences, this volume takes a nuanced approach, providing readers with the research to help DHH students gain competence in reading comprehension.
This book provides a brief geology, tectonic structure and metallogeny of Mongolia, central part of the giant Central Asian Orogenic Belt, and broad overview of major metallic (copper, gold, rare metals and rare earths, iron, lead and zinc, silver and platinum group), non-metallic (phosphorite and fluorspar) and fuel (uranium and coal) mineral deposits and occurrences, covering their tectonic position, metallogeny and deposit types, geological characteristics and origin, including newly found deposits and occurrences based on authors research data and a large information obtained during geological exploration work. The book is intended for professional economic geologists, for earth science students and practicing geologists.
Economic Thought Since Keynes provides a concise overview of changing economic thought in the latter part of the twentieth century. Part 1 gives an analysis of topics including: * Keynes and the General Theory, * the triumph of interventionism, * the neoclassical synthesis, * the resurgence of liberalism. Part 11 gives a concise biography of the 150 most influential economists since Keynes. This invaluable book will be a useful reference tool for anyone teaching or studying economics.
This book presents a comprehensive and self-contained treatment of the authors' newly developed scalable algorithms for the solutions of multibody contact problems of linear elasticity. The brand new feature of these algorithms is theoretically supported numerical scalability and parallel scalability demonstrated on problems discretized by billions of degrees of freedom. The theory supports solving multibody frictionless contact problems, contact problems with possibly orthotropic Tresca's friction, and transient contact problems. It covers BEM discretization, jumping coefficients, floating bodies, mortar non-penetration conditions, etc. The exposition is divided into four parts, the first of which reviews appropriate facets of linear algebra, optimization, and analysis. The most important algorithms and optimality results are presented in the third part of the volume. The presentation is complete, including continuous formulation, discretization, decomposition, optimality results, and numerical experiments. The final part includes extensions to contact shape optimization, plasticity, and HPC implementation. Graduate students and researchers in mechanical engineering, computational engineering, and applied mathematics, will find this book of great value and interest.
Focusing on women's pelvic health through yoga therapy, this evidence-based resource covers the intersections of biomechanics, self-study through yoga philosophy, emotional resilience, pain science and dynamic strategies for pelvic embodiment. Integrating pedagogical frameworks that differentiate yoga therapy from pelvic floor physical therapy, the book demonstrates how they can work together by including somatic education and case studies. It also covers breath patterns, mental constructs and conditioning, and baseline body awareness - taking the practitioner through the journey of self-assessment, building the therapeutic relationship and ongoing embodied practice. Looking at the individual rather than pelvic health as a sole diagnosis, Yoga Therapy for the Whole Woman is an invaluable guide for yoga teachers, yoga therapists, movement and fitness professionals and healthcare professionals working with women with pelvic floor challenges.
Quadratic programming (QP) is one advanced mathematical technique that allows for the optimization of a quadratic function in several variables in the presence of linear constraints. This book presents recently developed algorithms for solving large QP problems and focuses on algorithms which are, in a sense optimal, i.e., they can solve important classes of problems at a cost proportional to the number of unknowns. For each algorithm presented, the book details its classical predecessor, describes its drawbacks, introduces modifications that improve its performance, and demonstrates these improvements through numerical experiments. This self-contained monograph can serve as an introductory text on quadratic programming for graduate students and researchers. Additionally, since the solution of many nonlinear problems can be reduced to the solution of a sequence of QP problems, it can also be used as a convenient introduction to nonlinear programming.

Judgment, Imagination, and Politics brings together for the first time leading essays on the nature of judgment. Drawing from themes in Kant's Critique of Judgment and Hannah Arendt's discussion of judgment from Lectures on Kant's Political Philosophy, these essays deal with: the role of imagination in judgment; judgment as a distinct human faculty; the nature of judgment in law and politics; and the many puzzles that arise from the 'enlarged mentality, ' the capacity to consider the perspectives of others that aren't in Kant treated as essential to judgment
