Drawing on the biophysical sciences, public policy, geography,
economics, exploratory research and the behavioural sciences, this
book offers reviews and prescriptions for the future of ecological
economics, placing particular emphasis on complex sustainability
problems. The book is divided into three broad parts: challenges
and reviews, reorientations and openings, and frameworks and
applications. To begin, the authors illustrate the limitations of
ecological economics by highlighting the lack of theory and method,
the need for greater interdisciplinary co-operation and the
domination by economists from developed nations. They move on to
present strategies to address these shortcomings by focusing on
interdisciplinary methods and their theoretical basis, discussing
the future prospects for ecological economics, and addressing a
host of ecological economic issues from a variety of natural and
social science perspectives. They aim to challenge the notion of
ecological economics by addressing 'what it is', and asking 'what
it could be'. The book expands current thinking on ecological
economics by exploring existing avenues for integrative and
interdisciplinary research and discovering new overlaps with a
range of other disciplines. It will appeal to ecological and
environmental economists, and academics and researchers of the
social sciences, particularly environmental science and geography.

"The blue and white print has the night-time glow of a Joseph
Cornell ice-cube box or a Stan Brakhage film, the poppy glows
candescent but is gone. Anna Atkins' dirty fingernails are pressing
the damp skin of the poppy into cotton wadding and blotting paper
until the life has dried out of it..." Amateur botanist Anna Atkins
is now widely considered to be the first woman ever to have taken a
photograph. The introduction to one of her albums states that she
uses the photographic medium in order to "depict with the most
accuracy possible," and so assist other scientists. Yet visual
artist Annabel Dover's investigations led her to believe that
Atkins doctored and adulterated certain specimens, collaging
different sections of different plants together. In the subversive,
scrapbook narrative that follows both historic and imaginary
characters' stories are woven together: Henry James 'drowns' the
clothes of a friend post-suicide; Joe Orton's cleaning lady
considers the collaged wall in his bedsit; and Anna Atkins makes
the seaweed prints that will then appear in the first photographic
book to be published. A complex mixture of scientific observation
and tender, girlish enthusiasm Florilegia is above all else a
profound meditation on memory, loss, and our relationship to
images.

Intelligence agencies are reflections of the societies they serve.
No surprise, then, that modern spies and the agencies they work for
are fixated on the internet and electronic communications. These
same officials also struggle with notions of privacy,
appropriateness, national boundaries and the problem of
disinformation. They are citizens of both somewhere and nowhere,
serving a national public yet confronting spies who operate across
borders. These adversaries are utilising new technologies that
offer a transnational anonymity. Meanwhile, ordinary people are
keen to be protected from threats, but equally keen - basing their
understanding of intelligence on news and popular culture - to
avoid over-reach by authorities believed to have near-God-like
powers. This is the new operating environment for spies: a heady
mix of rapid technological development, identity politics,
plausible deniability, uncertainty and distrust of authority.
Hacker, Influencer, Faker, Spy explores both the challenges spies
face from these digital horizons, and the challenges citizens face
in understanding what spies do and how it impacts on them. Rob
Dover makes a radical case for overhauling intelligence to
capitalise on open-source information: shrinking the secret state,
whilst still supporting the functioning of modern governments in
the post-COVID age.
As demonstrated in New Orleans, the vast human and financial costs
of natural and human-induced disasters are often needlessly high as
a result of poor planning and response stemming from inadequate
disaster policy. This new handbook, from two top global authorities
in the field, shows how to construct a coherent, relevant and
effective policy framework. It is a vital read for all disaster
policy makers, planners, managers and governments. From the Asian
tsunami to hurricanes Katrina and Rita to the recent earthquake in
Pakistan, disasters both natural and human-induced are leading to
spiralling costs in terms of human lives, the destruction of homes,
businesses, public buildings and infrastructure and the resulting
financial and human crises that inevitably follow in the wake of
such catastrophes. Yet the failures in planning for, and responding
to, such disasters can often be traced to poor disaster policies
that are unsuited to the emerging scales of the problems they
confront and the lack of institutional capacity to implement plans
and manage disasters when they happen. This handbook, written by two
top authorities on disaster policy and management, seeks to
overcome this mismatch and to guide the examination and development
of a policy and institutional framework and associated strategies.
In particular, for the first time it brings together into a
coherent framework the insights of public policy, institutional
design and emergency and disaster management, stressing the cognate
nature of policy and institutional challenges between disasters and
sustainability. This is indispensable reading for all disaster
planners, policy makers and managers across the world seeking to
improve the quality, robustness and capacity of their disaster
management.
This book addresses all aspects of photodermatology by providing a
clear straightforward introduction to these diseases, their
investigation, diagnosis and management, including the use of
lasers. Each light sensitive disorder and each type of phototherapy
is supported by the principles of the underlying photophysics,
chemistry and biology. Doctors, nurses and technicians all have an
important role to play in the diagnosis of photodermatoses and in
the administration of phototherapy. This concise, richly
illustrated text provides them with valuable insights and a good
working overview of the light related areas of dermatology.
Elgar Research Agendas outline the future of research in a given
area. Leading scholars are given the space to explore their subject
in provocative ways, and map out the potential directions of
travel. They are relevant but also visionary. This Research Agenda
explores the academic field of intelligence studies and how it is
developing into an increasingly international and diverse area of
study. As more governments release records, and as new generations
of scholars engage with the topic from a range of perspectives, the
book considers how the field is becoming richer, wider, and more
global in scope. Featuring contributions by a diverse range of
leading intelligence scholars, it surveys a variety of core areas
in, and approaches to, the study of intelligence - including
technological perspectives, gender, deception, and the 'deep state'
- highlighting how intelligence will become a greater feature of
government and security in the future. Taking an interdisciplinary
approach, the book explores not only the established elements of
intelligence studies, but analyses the cutting edge of intelligence
research and proposes an agenda for the continued development of
the field. Offering concise and accessible discussions of
developing topics in intelligence studies, this Research Agenda
will be a useful guide for scholars and students of public policy,
international relations and security. It will also be of interest
to professionals engaged in research into security and intelligence
matters.
This book is truly interdisciplinary, it asks how researchers from
the humanities and natural sciences engage with and uncover the
past and how their present influences what they and how the past is
used for different purposes. This book informs students and
researchers from each of the disciplines about the ways and
pitfalls of each approach to inform their own research.
Contributions from historians, literary scholars, geologist,
cosmologists, evolutionary biologists, paleontologists and
paleoanthropologists are given equal weight and asked how they
engage with the past and present to offer, for the first time, a
forum for each discipline to learn from each other and to offer new
ideas of how the past can be engaged with from the present. The
Engaging with … series offers practical instruction alongside
theoretical standpoints to encourage an interdisciplinary
discussion of emerging areas of collaboration.

Hedges and field margins are important wildlife habitats and
deliver a range of ecosystem services, and their value is
increasingly recognised by ecologists. This book reviews and
assesses the current state of research on hedgerows and associated
field margins. With the intensification of agriculture in the
second half of the last century, field sizes were increased by
amalgamation and the rooting out of hedges, synthetic pesticide and
inorganic fertiliser use increased, and traditional methods of
hedge management were largely abandoned. The book is split into two
main sections. The first deals with definitions, current and
historic management, the impact of pesticides, the decline in hedge
stock and condition, and new approaches to hedge evaluation using
remote sensing techniques. The second section explores the
pollination and biological pest control benefits provided by hedges
and field margins and examines the ecology of some of the major
groups that are found in hedgerows and field margins: butterflies
and moths, carabid beetles, mammals, and birds. A case study on
birds and invertebrates from a research farm managed as a
commercial enterprise, but which attempts to farm with wildlife in
mind, brings these themes together. A final chapter introduces the
neglected area of hedges in the urban environment. The book will be
of great interest to advanced students, researchers and
professionals in ecology, agriculture, wildlife conservation,
natural history, landscape, environmental and land management.
Identifying "lessons learned" is not new -- the military has
been doing it for decades. However, members of the worldwide
intelligence community have been slow to extract wider lessons
gathered from the past and apply them to contemporary challenges.
"Learning from the Secret Past" is a collection of ten carefully
selected cases from post-World War II British intelligence history.
Some of the cases include the Malayan Emergency, the Cuban Missile
Crisis, Northern Ireland, and the lead up to the Iraq War. Each
case acommpanied by authentic documents, illuminates important
lessons that today's intelligence officers and policymakers -- in
Britain and elsewhere -- should heed.
Written by former and current intelligence officers,
high-ranking government officials, and scholars, the case studies
in this book detail intelligence successes and failures, discuss
effective structuring of the intelligence community, examine the
effective use of intelligence in counterinsurgency, explore the
ethical dilemmas and practical gains of interrogation, and
highlight the value of human intelligence and the dangers of the
politicization of intelligence. The lessons learned from this book
stress the value of past experience and point the way toward
running effective intelligence agencies in a democratic
society.
Scholars and professionals worldwide who specialize in
intelligence, defense and security studies, and international
relations will find this book to be extremely valuable.

"The gates to brilliance are surrounded by a cloud of sweat and
tears." That is what Olympic dressage rider and coach Robert
Dover's mentor, the revered Swedish equestrian Colonel Bengt
Ljungquist, told him. It is a lesson that stuck-only with great
passion and determination can one achieve success, and just maybe,
happiness, too. In a fascinating book that reads like a potent
elixir, three parts memoir and one part inspirational
self-improvement guide, readers are ushered through 16 "gates to
brilliance"-keys that Dover discovered as he made his way through
his own life, from gawky, horse-crazy child to influential Olympic
coach and entrepreneur. Sharing deeply personal stories that were
fundamental to his evolution, Dover is candid about the path he
took on his way to becoming one of the most successful equestrians
in the world. Readers learn about abuse he suffered as a child, and
his formative years as the only Jewish kid on Grand Bahama Island.
He writes frankly about his father's alcoholism, his parents'
divorce, and his unwavering devotion to his mother. The book delves
into his fear of coming out, explores love and loss, and examines
the perfectionist tendencies that have at times held Dover back,
while at others, have helped him rise to all new heights. In
addition, readers hear stories from the barns, arenas, and show
grounds where Dover built his career, from his days as a wild Pony
Clubber to his struggles in Germany under the tutelage of some of
Europe's great riding masters. We meet the horses and people he
partnered with along the way as he offers a glimpse behind the
curtain at the pomp and politics of international equestrian
competition. Throughout, Dover's dedication to self-betterment and
belief in living a life with purpose stands front and centre,
softened by his humour and willingness to cast a critical eye on
himself. With countless moments of searing honesty bound to
fundamental life lessons from which he hopes we can all learn,
Dover assures us the road to success is there for the taking. The
ultimate goal, though, is to emerge on the other side of whatever
comes next a brighter, more compassionate, happier person-that is
brilliance.

It is clear that the transition to ecologically sustainable
patterns of development requires significant institutional change,
yet we face a paradox. Although institutions are the primary means
of driving reform, they are themselves a root cause of
unsustainable development and a barrier to positive change. This
volume moves beyond the current debate by advancing our
understanding of the nature of institutional change, the features
of more appropriate institutional settings, and the manner in which
change can be enabled. Institutional Change for Sustainable
Development presents a flexible, accessible, yet robust conceptual
framework for comprehending institutional dimensions of
sustainability, emphasising the complexity of institutional
systems, and highlighting the interdependence between policy
learning and institutional change. This framework is applied and
developed through the analysis of five significant arenas of
institutional and policy change: environmental policy in the EU;
New Zealand's landmark Resource Management Act; strategic
environmental assessment; emerging National Councils for
Sustainable Development; and transformative property rights
instruments. From these explorations, key principles for
institutional change are identified, including the institutional
accommodation of a sustainability discourse, the interdependence of
normative and institutional change; reiteration and learning;
integration in policy and practice; subsidiarity; and legal change.
Institutional Change for Sustainable Development will be of
interest to researchers, policymakers and practitioners concerned
with sustainability, resource management and environmental policy.

The phenomenon of Europeanization has become a topic that is
constantly under debate. This critical volume examines
Europeanization through examples of British defence policy, the
European Security and Defence Policy, the legal arms trade and the
decision to go to war in Iraq in 2003. Drawing on examples from
Austria and France, as well as unveiling the role of the Prime
Minister and his close confidants in driving through this
controversial defence policy, Robert Dover provides an original and
engaging contemporaneous account of Europeanization. Academics,
post-graduate researchers and analysts concerned with British
foreign and defence policy and those interested in European defence
policy more generally, will all find this study a must read.
A broad and comprehensive exploration of the role of the ecological
sciences in sustainability for undergraduates. The urgent quest for
more sustainable patterns of development has placed new and
difficult demands on both scientists and policy makers as they seek
to establish more informed and effective policy processes and
management regimes in the the face of pervasive uncertainty.
Written by an international group of authors from a range of
disciplines - ecology, geography, law, policy analysis and others -
the chapters explore issues of scientific legitimacy, public
participation, non-governmental organisations, inter-sectoral
communication and pragmatic public policy across a wide range of
ecosystem management contexts.
Disasters both natural and human-induced are leading to spiralling
costs in terms of human lives, lost livelihoods and damaged assets
and businesses. Yet these consequences and the financial and human
crises that follow catastrophes can often be traced to policies
unsuited to the emerging scales of the problems they confront, and
the lack of institutional capacity to implement planning and
prevention or to manage disasters. This book seeks to overcome this
mismatch and to guide development of a policy and institutional
framework. For the first time it brings together into a coherent
framework the insights of public policy, institutional design and
emergency and disaster management.
A collection of essays -- early seminal works as well as
freshinterpretations -- on the famous German expressionist
film,Metropolis. Fritz Lang's classic 1927 film Metropolis has
justifiably become an icon for the complexities of Weimar culture.
Among the important general issues it also raises are the relation
between ideology and art, the status and authorship of the film
text in the entertainment market, the city, the construction of
gender, the relation between the human body and the machine in
modernity, and the relation between mass and high culture. This
volume provides abroad range of materials and resources for the
study of Lang's film, including both well-known, previously
published critical essays and contributions appearing for the first
time here. The editors provide a two-part introductionthat
furnishes context for what follows: Bachmann's part deals with the
genesis, production, and contemporary reception of the film, while
Minden's defines the problems posed by the text and reviews
thesolutions to these problemsas proposed by later generations of
critics. The first part of the book proper includes selected
contemporaryreviews, commentary by Fritz Lang and others involved
in the making ofthe film, and extracts from Thea von Harbou's
original novel. In the second part, eight modern scholars provide
fresh essays on the genesis, promotion, and reception of the film.
Approximately half of the material in the volume has never before
appeared in print. The volume will appealto students of German,
film, cultural and intellectual history, and social theory. Michael
Minden is University Lecturer in German at Cambridge University and
a fellow of Jesus College. Holger Bachmann received hisPh.D. from
Cambridge on Arthur Schnitzler and film.
