Nested Political Coalitions - Nation, Regime, Program, Cabinet (Hardcover, Revised ed.): Terrence E. Cook Nested Political Coalitions - Nation, Regime, Program, Cabinet (Hardcover, Revised ed.)
Terrence E. Cook
R2,694 Discovery Miles 26 940 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Cook's principles of coalition politics are really rules of thumb followed by boundedly rational actors, and can predict much coalition politics behavior. Agents prefer to create marginally winning coalitions with like-minded groups in the expectation of receiving rewards commensurate with investments. Four distinct types of coalitions--country, regime, agenda, and cabinet--are explored, along with a thorough examination of current coalition literature. Normally nested, the broader coalitions give rise to narrower ones, revealing diminishing bases of support and duration. Also, barring political catastrophe, change in coalitions at the program or cabinet level usually do not harm, and may actually strengthen, the regime or country coalitions from which they arise.

Students and scholars in comparative politics and political theory will benefit from Cook's ability to rise above the usual divisions and limitations of sub-fields. A distinctive and refreshing mix of theory and empirical material, DEGREESINested Political Coalitions DEGREESR provides a sensible digest of diverse theoretical literatures, a good overview of coalition dynamics from one level to the next, and illustrates all this with breathtaking empirical coverage.

The Radar Evaluation Handbook (Hardcover): David K. Barton, Charles E. Cook The Radar Evaluation Handbook (Hardcover)
David K. Barton, Charles E. Cook
R4,298 Discovery Miles 42 980 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Blue Pelican Java (Hardcover): Charles E. Cook Blue Pelican Java (Hardcover)
Charles E. Cook
R1,187 Discovery Miles 11 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Blue Pelican Java" is a somewhat unusual high school computer science textbook. Most computer science texts will begin with a section on the history of computers followed with a flurry of definitions that are just "so many words" to the average student. The approach here is to first give the student some experience upon which to hang the definitions that come later. The usual practice of introducing classes and objects is deferred until the student has a firm grasp of the fundamentals (loops, decision structures, etc). Thus, the beginning student is not overwhelmed by the simultaneous introduction of OOPs and the fundamentals. The book includes plenty of exercises (many in "contest" form), programming projects, and a huge appendix.

Value Driven Product Planning and Systems Engineering (Hardcover, American Paperback): Harry E. Cook, Luke A Wissmann Value Driven Product Planning and Systems Engineering (Hardcover, American Paperback)
Harry E. Cook, Luke A Wissmann
R2,918 Discovery Miles 29 180 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Engineers and scientists often need to sell an innovative idea for a new product to top management. Those who occupy product planning positions also need to be constantly scanning ideas for improving value. The engineer as product planner must learn to think like its major competitor using customer value as a guide. This book provides essential support for engineers and scientists who are required to make realistic business cases for new product concepts.

Radar Signals - An Introduction to Theory and Application (Hardcover, New edition): Charles E. Cook, Marvin Bernfeld, Marvin... Radar Signals - An Introduction to Theory and Application (Hardcover, New edition)
Charles E. Cook, Marvin Bernfeld, Marvin Bernfield
R4,172 Discovery Miles 41 720 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Artech House is pleased to reissue this classic work, originally published in 1967 and still considered by many to be the definitive text on radar signal analysis and design. The book describes the fundamental signal processing techniques that enable radar engineers to "design in" desired characteristics to the radar signal.

Separation, Assimilation, or Accommodation - Contrasting Ethnic Minority Policies (Hardcover, New): Terrence E. Cook Separation, Assimilation, or Accommodation - Contrasting Ethnic Minority Policies (Hardcover, New)
Terrence E. Cook
R2,690 Discovery Miles 26 900 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Ethnic violence is rampant, but avoidable. Cook compares and contrasts all major options in ethnic minority policy, including forms of separation, assimilation, or accommodation typically favored by subordinate ethnic groups. Topics include segregation and genocide, emigrations and secessionist struggles, attempts at cultural annihilation, assimilating for individual or collective opportunities, accommodations as minimal concessions in such things as tolerance, special group rights or power-sharing, and accommodations as maximal demands on those same themes. Grounded in current concrete examples, Cook's analysis brings coherence to a confused and often lethal political problem.

Product Management - Value, quality, cost, price, profit and organization (Hardcover, 1997 ed.): Harry E. Cook Product Management - Value, quality, cost, price, profit and organization (Hardcover, 1997 ed.)
Harry E. Cook
R6,398 Discovery Miles 63 980 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This work develops a quantitative structured methodology for managing the development of new products for highly competitive markets. Particular attention has been given to integrating a number of experimental tools and concepts within a common framework including marketing research. Taguchi methods, value benchmarking, value engineering, total quality management, activity based costing, concurrent engineering, statistical quality control, systems engineering, and organization are often treated today as related but separate tools and concepts. The reader should gain an understanding of how these tools complement each other and when they can be used most effectively to aid product decision making.

The Least of These - Race, Law, and Religion in American Culture (Hardcover): Anthony E Cook The Least of These - Race, Law, and Religion in American Culture (Hardcover)
Anthony E Cook
R1,175 Discovery Miles 11 750 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

First published in 1997. Examining race, law, and religion in today's America, The Least of These highlights the power of these principles to both divide and unite, and promotes a new form of liberalism that incorporates the spiritual values long neglected by earlier progressive liberals. Relaunching the fundamental tenet of progressive liberalism-that a justly ordered society must protect the interests and promote opportunities for the least advantaged of its population-Anthony Cook argues for a revival of the progressive vision of American politics. While the affirmative action debates smolder around the country, Cook contends that the spiritual foundation of this liberal tenet must be unearthed and elaborated to fit our times before we can attempt to tackle the issues that the civil rights era has left unanswered. As the twentieth century closes, The Least of These provides a greater understanding of the roots of our ongoing socio-political struggles, and serves as an invaluable profile of progressive liberal politics from World War II to the present.

Inferencing is defined as 'the act of deriving logical conclusions from premises known or assumed to be true', and it is one of the most important processes necessary for successful comprehension during reading. This volume features contributions by distinguished researchers in cognitive psychology, educational psychology, and neuroscience on topics central to our understanding of the inferential process during reading. The chapters cover aspects of inferencing that range from the fundamental bottom-up processes that form the basis for an inference to occur, to the more strategic processes that transpire when a reader is engaged in literary understanding of a text. Basic activation mechanisms, word-level inferencing, methodological considerations, inference validation, causal inferencing, emotion, development of inferences processes as a skill, embodiment, contributions from neuroscience, and applications to naturalistic text are all covered as well as expository text, online learning materials, and literary immersion.

Representing Kink - Fringe Sexuality and Textuality in Literature, Digital Narrative, and Popular Culture (Paperback): Sara K.... Representing Kink - Fringe Sexuality and Textuality in Literature, Digital Narrative, and Popular Culture (Paperback)
Sara K. Howe, Susan E. Cook; Contributions by Bobby Derie, Antonnet Johnson, Jane M Kubiesa, …
R959 Discovery Miles 9 590 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Representing Kink raises awareness about non-normative texts and non-normative erotic practices and desires. It defines "kink" broadly, encompassing a range of "inappropriate" texts and understanding it in frequent reference to non-normative erotic fantasies and experiences. Kink is treated as both a set of practices as well as a category of texts at the nexus of subject and form. In addition to canonical texts that take up erotic and marginalized themes, the collection also studies forms that are themselves fringe and feature kink: taboo literature, self-published erotica, SM narratives, fan fiction, role-playing games, and other disavowed texts. The purpose of this study is to focus attention on the margins of an already marginalized subject, in order to highlight the extent to which non-normative textuality and eroticism both shape and are shaped by culture and context. It sheds light on a category of subjects that is at once mainstream in the form of texts such as Fifty Shades of Grey and yet nevertheless repeatedly disparaged and undertheorized. This book advocates for conversations about kinky texts that transcend dichotomous frameworks of good and bad, and normal and deviant--thinking instead in new, theoretically rigorous and flexible directions.

The Solomon Narratives in the Context of the Hebrew Bible - Told and Retold (Hardcover): Sean E. Cook The Solomon Narratives in the Context of the Hebrew Bible - Told and Retold (Hardcover)
Sean E. Cook
R4,260 Discovery Miles 42 600 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book is concerned with ascertaining the value of having two versions of the same monarchic history of Israel within the Hebrew Bible (focusing on the books of Kings and Chronicles). It is furthermore concerned with how the book of Chronicles is read in relation to the book of Kings as Chronicles is so often considered to be a later rewritten text drawing upon an earlier version of the Masoretic Text of Samuel and Kings. The predominant scholarly approach to reading the book of Chronicles is to read it in light of how the Chronicler emended his source texts (additions, omissions, harmonizations). This approach has yielded great success in our understanding of the Chronicler's theology and rhetoric. However, Cook asserts, it has also failed to consider how the book of Chronicles can be read as an autonomous and coherent document. That is, a diachronic approach to reading Chronicles sometimes misses the theological and rhetorical features of the text in its final form. This book shows the great benefit of reading these narratives as autonomous and coherent by using the Solomon narratives as a case study. These narratives are first read individually, and then together, so as to ascertain their uniqueness vis-a-vis one another. Finally, Cook addresses questions related to the concordance of these narratives as well as their purposes within their respective larger literary contexts.

Reconstructing Adult Masculinities - Part-time Work in Contemporary Japan (Paperback): Emma E. Cook Reconstructing Adult Masculinities - Part-time Work in Contemporary Japan (Paperback)
Emma E. Cook
R1,496 Discovery Miles 14 960 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Over the past two decades, Japan's socioeconomic environment has undergone considerable changes prompted by both a long recession and the relaxation of particular labour laws in the 1990s and 2000s. Within this context, "freeters", part-time workers aged between fifteen and thirty-four who are not housewives or students, emerged into the public arena as a social problem. This book, drawing on six years of ethnographic research, takes the lives of male freeters as a lens to examine contemporary ideas and experiences of adult masculinities. It queries how notions of adulthood and masculinity are interwoven and how these ideals are changing in the face of large-scale employment shifts. Highlighting the continuing importance of productivity and labour in understandings of masculinities, it argues that men experience and practice multiple masculinities which are often contradictory, sometimes limiting, and change as they age and in interaction with others, and with social structures, institutions, and expectations. Providing a fascinating alternative to the stereotypical idea of the Japanese male as a salaryman, this book will be of huge interest to students and scholars of Japanese culture and society, social and cultural anthropology, gender and men's studies.

Genocide in Cambodia and Rwanda - New Perspectives (Hardcover): Susan E. Cook Genocide in Cambodia and Rwanda - New Perspectives (Hardcover)
Susan E. Cook
R3,900 Discovery Miles 39 000 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume deals with aspects of genocide in Rwandaand Cambodia that have been largely unexplored to date, including the impact of regional politics and the role played by social institutions in perpetrating genocide. Although the "story" of the Cambodian genocide of 1975-1979 and that of the Rwandan genocide of 1994 have been written about in detail, most have focused on how the genocides took place, what the ideas and motives were that led extremist factions to attempt to kill whole sections of their country's population, and who their victims were. This volume builds on our understanding of genocide in Cambodia and Rwanda by bringing new issues, sources, and approaches into focus. The chapters in this book are grouped so that a single theme^s explored in both the Cambodian and Rwandan contexts; their ordering is designed to facilitate comparative analysis. The first three chapters emphasize the importance of political discourse in the genocidal process. Chapters 4 and 5 examine social institutions and explore their role in the genocidal process. Chapters 6 and 7 describe the military trajectories of the genocidal regimes in Cambodia and Rwanda after their overthrow, showing that genocide and genocidal intents as a political program do not cease the moment the massacres subside. The final chapters deal with private and public efforts to memorialize the genocides in the months and years following the killing.Drawing on ten years of genocide studies at Yale, this excellent anthology assembles high-quality new research from a variety of continents, disciplines, and languages. It will be an important addition to ongoing research on genocide.

Education in the New Millennium - Not Like Your Grandmother's Schoolhouse (Paperback, New): Michael F. Shaughnessy Education in the New Millennium - Not Like Your Grandmother's Schoolhouse (Paperback, New)
Michael F. Shaughnessy; Contributions by Cheryl Wright, Ruth E Cook, Virginia J. Mahan, Michael S. Nystul, …
R1,824 Discovery Miles 18 240 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Education in the New Millennium details- for parents, taxpayers, and politicians, and those concerned about education- the intricacies and complexities of "education" in America. Author Michael F. Shaughnessy documents a number of different forms of education in the U.S., by dividing "education" into a number of groups, including gifted education, special education, vocational education, and bilingual education. Educators are now dealing with various educational programs such as mentoring, guidance, and creativity programs, and are increasingly confronted with students with a number of "exceptionalities," such as health problems and emotional and behavioral disorders. In order to understand the complexity of education and in order to ensure that "no child is left behind," all involved in education should be aware of the truly complex problems facing teachers, administrators, and educational personnel in America. This book can help with this crucial understanding.

Wendy E. Cook
R553 Discovery Miles 5 530 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Through her daughter's illness, Wendy Cook began to study the deep aspects of nutrition, and particularly the effects of different foods on human health and consciousness. In Foodwise she presents a cornucopia of ideas, advice and commentary, informed by the work of Rudolf Steiner. Cook relates human evolution to changes in consciousness and the consumption of different foods, considering among other topics the importance of agricultural methods, the nature of the human being, the significance of grasses and grains, the mystery of human digestion and the question of vegetarianism. She also analyzes the nutritional (or otherwise) qualities of carbohydrates, minerals, fats and oils, milk and dairy products, herbs and spices, salt and sweeteners, stimulants, legumes, the nightshade family, bread, water and dietary supplements. She ends this comprehensive survey of nutrition with practical tips on cooking, planning menus, children's food and sharing meals--and some mouth-watering recipes!

John Sculley In the short history of personal computing, the task of the software programmer has been one of the least recognized-but one of the most significant-in the industry. In addition to defining the prob lems, and presenting the solutions, the software programmer is con fronted with the challenge of having to predict what combination of ideas and technologies will move the industry forward in the most compelling way. Even though we've seen the development of tremendous applications in a surprisingly short period of time, the most difficult problems often surface when we try to elevate a suc cessful local idea to the international arena. In the case of Apple Computer, these challenges become especially profound when you consider that Apple sells Macintosh not just in the United States, but in Japan, China, the Middle East, Africa, East ern Europe, and even to the United Nations itself. Of course, this means that the personal computer must work everywhere around the world. But more significantly, it also means that the software must reflect the uniqueness of a given culture, its language, morals, and even its sense of humor. To step away from a narrowly-defined, nationally-based paradigm for software development, programmers, management, and entire corporations must learn to recognize what elements of an interface, problem solving technique, documentation illustration, package de sign, and advertisement are local, and which elements are appro priate for global markets."

Avian Desert Predators (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1997): William E. Cook Avian Desert Predators (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1997)
William E. Cook
R2,744 Discovery Miles 27 440 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Birds are not particularly well suited to desert life. Unlike mammals, they are generally active during the day and do not usually go underground to escape the intense desert heat. Among the few types of birds that have successfully invaded the desert ecosystem are the predators. Many species of hawks, owls, roadrunners, vultures, and shrikes survive very well in deserts. What attributes make this group especially suited to desert life? How have they augmented their abilities to cope with the harsh constraints imposed by the desert habitat? These are among the issues explored in this new volume, which brings together much of the current research on adaptations of avian desert predators.
