Dies pragt das kollektive Gedachtnis. Die immerwahrende Prasens dieser Naturkrafte und steigende Opferzahlen haben die globale Bevolkerung sensibilisiert und auch die Wissenschaft richtet ihr Augenmerk zunehmend auf die Erforschung solcher Extremereignisse, auch unter historischen Gesichtspunkten. Schwierig erweist sich jedoch die Anwendung des Begriffes Naturkatastrophe auf Ereignisse in der mittelalterlichen Historiographie, da in der damaligen religiosen Vorstellung Naturgefahren als gottgegeben angesehen waren, wodurch die Natur selbst als unabhangige Gefahrenquelle nicht mehr in Betracht gezogen wurde. Auch das im Mittelalter Katastrophen implizierte Gottes Zorn/Strafe - Modell ist eine Sichtweise, die menschliches Handeln in die Verantwortung fur Schadensereignisse zieht und damit wieder den Blick auf die Gesellschaft lenkt. Daher widerspricht der Terminus naturlich" der religiosen Empfindung der mittelalterlichen Welt und Eingang in die Quellen fand nicht, was naturlich, sondern auffallend war, was wider den Lauf der Dinge, also unnaturlich" erschien. Aspekte dieser Arbeit sind daher neben den den Naturereignissen zugeordeten Katastrophen auch Phanomene, die in der mittelalterlichen Interpretation als solche aufgefasst wurden sowie ihre Wahrnehmung und Darstellung in der frankischen Historiographie des 8. und 9. Jahrhunderts.
