The detection of cancer risk factors and their possible avoid ance
would most effectively contribute to the fight against cancer.
Research in these areas depends to a substantial degree on in vivo
experimental animal models and on epide miologic studies, including
data from cancer registries. When the Deutsches
Krebsforschungszentrum was founded in 1964, its division
"Mechanisms of Tumorigenesis" and a number of other divisions
became engaged in research on chemical carcinogenesis of the skin,
mainly using the mouse skin as an experimental model. Their
interest orig inated in part from investigations of the new and at
that time controversial pathogenic principle of conditional car
cinogens as represented by certain tumor promoters which are per se
noncarcinogenic. During the past 25 years, conditional carcinogens
in terms of tumor promoters were established as anew, nonclassical
category of cancer risk factors besides the classical solitary
carcinogens. In the course of this exciting period, scientists of
our center started cooperative programs with clinical dermato
logists of the University of Heidelberg at the Clinics of
Dermatology in Heidelberg and Mannheim, to extend the scope of
their investigations into clinical oncology and to contribute by
experimental approaches to solving problems in clinical oncology.
This led to a gradual shift from mere animal studies to the more
direct analyses of human tumors and opened up for us a new phase of
research.
Have you ever tried to give up smoking? Most smokers have. It is
even more difficult to avoid relapse - after days, weeks or even
years - and the long-term results of many stop smoking programmes
are disappointing. But this week-long programme can help you stop
smoking for good. Professor David F Marks uses techniques from
cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), which has been proven to be
effective by teaching you how to 're-program' your mind to not want
to smoke. You will no longer have to rely on willpower alone to
give up smoking. By becoming aware of your smoking triggers and
dealing with the thoughts and behaviours that lead you to smoke
automatically, over the course of a week you will gradually find
your cravings disappear altogether. You will learn: * Exercises and
strategies to help you regain control from your smoking automatic
pilot * Advice on relaxation and stress reduction * How to avoid
future relapses * Why alternative approaches such nicotine
replacement therapy or e-cigarettes are less effective * Tips on
healthy eating and exercise to manage weight Stop Smoking Now will
help you not only give up your habit, but help you to remain a
non-smoker for life. Overcoming self-help guides use clinically
proven techniques to treat long-standing and disabling conditions,
both psychological and physical. Many guides in the Overcoming
series are recommended under the Reading Well Books on Prescription
scheme. Series Editor: Professor Peter Cooper

The subject of the present study concerns the relationships between
men and women and the composition of household groups among the
lower Afro-American strata of the society of Curacao. The material
on which it is based was collected in Curacao in the course of a
15-month period of fieldwork in 1965 and 1966.
100 years after the most infamous shipwreck in history, imagine:
What If Titanic Didn't Sink? Perhaps no disaster in history has
endured the scrutiny reserved for the sinking of the RMS Titanic on
her maiden voyage on April 15, 1912. Yet nearly a century after the
disaster, there is perhaps one question that remains unanswered
about the legendary British steamship: What if Titanic didn't sink
and the rich and poor she carried had survived that terrible night?
Titanic was a marvel of luxury and innovation. But it was the names
on her passenger list that said it all. The British Liner's first
trek across the Atlantic was not just an adventure for the well to
do. It was a happening. The voyage was a gathering of pre-war power
and influence where deals were done, markets were made and futures
were set. Titanic was the world's greatest symbol of wealth and
success for the very fewest. For those who could afford the
enormous price of a first class stateroom, it was the place to be.
But after colliding with an iceberg while recklessly racing across
the North Atlantic, eminent Captain Edward J. Smith learns that his
ship is doomed -- unless he makes decisions that can save Titanic
and her remarkable cargo against all odds. Twenty years later,
Titanic has enjoyed a successful career and the privileged who
sailed on her maiden voyage have become the world's wealthiest
financiers and industrialists.. All have one thing in common: the
power to influence history. A new President, himself a Titanic
survivor, is slowly leading the United States out of economic
depression but international hostilities are building again and
another World War is inevitable. He reaches out to his fellow
Titanic survivors. Together, can they rewrite the course of
history? Or have they once again unwittingly boarded Titanic for
her final voyage?
September, 1938: An angry hurricane is racing across the Atlantic
as the fledgling US Weather Bureau scrambles to track the monster
storm. Inexplicably, the forecasters lose sight of the typhoon,
which unfathomably grows more powerful and takes direct aim at an
unsuspecting New England. Even as the deadly storm approaches, on
the wealthy Rhode Island summer retreat of Napatree Point, there is
another kind of evil lurking. With a trail of blood marking his
every eerie advance, a man of equally terrifying proportions is
being hunted by lawmen dedicated to stopping the crazed murderer's
killing spree since his escape days earlier from the State Prison
in Wethersfield, Connecticut. No one is safe from the threat of man
and nature as the insane killer and an epic hurricane descend
together on the unsuspecting beaches of the Rhode Island coastline,
bent on death and destruction.
