The field of research on the paranormal has changed enormously in
the last 20 years. Examining experiences of ESP, psychokinesis,
precognition, ganzfeld, dissociative states, out-of-the-body
experiences, alien abductions and near-death experiences, David
Marks appraises the best available evidence to date on scientific
claims of the paranormal. Each chapter also provides a description
of the psychological processes that are likely to contribute to
these experiences, and to the high prevalence of paranormal
beliefs. Importantly, this book does not take a fixed sceptical or
'disbelieving' view of the phenomena but, as far as possible,
offers a neutral gaze which will equip readers to make up their own
minds, as well as providing them with the critical skills to defend
their conclusions.

The detection of cancer risk factors and their possible avoid ance
would most effectively contribute to the fight against cancer.
Research in these areas depends to a substantial degree on in vivo
experimental animal models and on epide miologic studies, including
data from cancer registries. When the Deutsches
Krebsforschungszentrum was founded in 1964, its division
"Mechanisms of Tumorigenesis" and a number of other divisions
became engaged in research on chemical carcinogenesis of the skin,
mainly using the mouse skin as an experimental model. Their
interest orig inated in part from investigations of the new and at
that time controversial pathogenic principle of conditional car
cinogens as represented by certain tumor promoters which are per se
noncarcinogenic. During the past 25 years, conditional carcinogens
in terms of tumor promoters were established as anew, nonclassical
category of cancer risk factors besides the classical solitary
carcinogens. In the course of this exciting period, scientists of
our center started cooperative programs with clinical dermato
logists of the University of Heidelberg at the Clinics of
Dermatology in Heidelberg and Mannheim, to extend the scope of
their investigations into clinical oncology and to contribute by
experimental approaches to solving problems in clinical oncology.
This led to a gradual shift from mere animal studies to the more
direct analyses of human tumors and opened up for us a new phase of
research.
Psychologists like to claim that Psychology is a science, yet,
until now, the discipline has lacked any real scientific laws, has
had no overarching scientific paradigm and has been blighted by
poor replicability of research, all of which have dogged the
discipline. Attempts to place Psychology under a single scientific
umbrella, e.g. Behaviourism, Cognitivism, Biological Science,
Social Science or Human Science, have all failed for a host of
reasons. This unique book presents a single paradigm for all of
Psychology within a framework of Natural Science. For example, it
employs as a model an organising principle known in another
scientific discipline for over a century, the principle of
Homeostasis. Findings across the entire discipline including
perception, learning, emotion, stress, addiction, well-being and
consciousness are all shown to be consistent with a new paradigm
based on this, and other principles drawn from natural science.

Health Psychology provides students with the tools they need to
evaluate and critically appraise theory and research before it can
be applied practically. Using the most up-to-date research
available, the sixth edition places an emphasis on the real-world
application of health psychology, demonstrating how theory learnt
in the classroom influences public policy. In this book, David
Marks, Michael Murray and Emee Vida Estacio take a holistic
approach to health psychology, giving equal weight to the
biological, psychological and social factors that impact health
behaviour, culture and change. The text presents students with an
accessible and comprehensive introduction to the field of health
psychology and the new edition contains a brand new chapter on
stress, a key topic in health psychology. It is also supported by
online resources for students and lecturers, including a range of
case studies taken from across the world.
