This book presents an institutional study located at the
intersection mathematics education and vocational education. Using
the concept of technology as a unifying theme, it presents a
critique of neoliberalist policies and their impact upon
curriculum, teachers' work, and the apparent
de-institutionalization of vocational education - with particular
reference to mathematics education and the consequences for adult
students as (potential) workers and citizens.
*Winner of the James S. Donnelly, Sr. Prize 2022* In Ireland, 2018,
a constitutional ban that equated the life of a woman to the life
of a fertilised embryo was overturned and abortion was finally
legalised. This victory for the Irish Repeal movement set the
country alight with euphoria. But, for some, the celebrations were
short-lived - the new legislation turned out to be one of the most
conservative in Europe. People still travel overseas for abortions
and services are not yet fully commissioned in Northern Ireland.
This book traces the history of the origins of the Eighth
Amendment, which was drawn up in fear of a tide of liberal reforms
across Europe. It draws out the lessons learned from the
groundbreaking campaign in 2018, which was the culmination of a
35-year-long reproductive rights movement and an inspiring example
of modern grassroots activism. It tells the story of the 'Repeal'
campaign through the lens of the activists who are still fighting
in a movement that is only just beginning.
The book presents a high-impact re-reading of core topics in the
Marx and Marxist debates including: value-theory, the
commodity-nature of money, complex or skilled labour, the
determination of the value of labour-power and the nature of
extraordinary surplus value. Drawing on this literature, the book
provides original and innovative insights into key controversies in
contemporary capitalism such as the increasingly intellectual
character of commodity-producing labour, the emergence of global
value chains, the relevance of ground-rent bearing commodities, and
the specific, uneven developmental dynamics of "resource-rich"
countries in the global process of capital accumulation.
Contributing to the renewed vitality of critical studies of the
economic works of Karl Marx, this book will be essential reading
for all those interested in contemporary debates within Marxism, as
well as readers of political economy, economics, development
studies and economic sociology.
This is the first book to explore adult mathematics education.
It aims to situate research and practice in adults learning
mathematics within the wider field of lifelong learning and
lifelong education. Topics covered include: mathematics and common
sense; statistical literacy and numeracy; new theories on learning
mathematics; mathematical competences for the workplace;
ethnomathematics; and the training of tutors
God is in the dock. Shall we convict him or forgive him? Shall we
replace the God of Scripture with another of our choosing, mock and
deride him, or ignore him? Shall we replace revelation with the
chaos of speculation? We perceive ourselves, rather than God, as
the center of the world and this universal condition leads to
conflict with others and with God. Maintaining our center causes
cheating, lying, litigation, divorce, wars, genocide, and human
misery. Western civilization is giving up trust in the promise of
God's mercy, justice, and forgiveness and replacing it with trust
in the goodness of man. Jesus warned us to beware the teaching of
the Sadducees and Pharisees. The Sadducees, who denied hope of
eternal life, are a rough equivalent of our modern day secularists
with their religious trust that this world is all there is.
Replacing God with trust in flawed human nature is a mark of
arrogance that even pagans would have characterized as hubris
evoking divine wrath. The Pharisee's yeast of self-righteousness is
a natural condition of us all. Even when cleansed it reappears in
every tradition rendering forgiveness and transformation a promise
only for those who think they have earned and deserve it. Such a
distortion of God's word is congenial to our self-as-center, but it
robs us sinners of the justice and mercy of a loving God. Following
Jesus's warning we have the opportunity to wipe away the Sadducee
arrogance and the Pharisee self-righteousness and discover anew the
supreme power and joy of the Christian faith.
These are the letters received and sent by Charles Henry Brown
between the years 1847 and 1864. As an aeronaut, Brown's lifelong
obsession with aerostation took him from his native Great Britain
to Australia. While his aeronautical endeavours met with only
limited success he was, however, determined to record his
contribution to the science, and from an early stage established a
vital correspondence with a number of leading figures in the world
of ballooning. The letters provide insights into the developing
field of aeronautics, and reveal the tensions, rivalries and
downright underhand conduct of some of the pioneers of aviation.
Brown's intention was to publish his collected correspondence, but
his failure to fully realise his own lifelong ambition as an
aeronaut of note led him in despair to take his life before he
achieved his objective of bringing the compiled correspondence to
print. The manuscript was later recovered by a relative and
deposited at the State Library of Victoria where it sat receiving
but scant attention until now.
This book explores community education in Ireland and argues that
neoliberalism has had a profound effect on community education.
Rather than retain its foundational characteristics of collective,
equality-led principles and practices, community education has lost
much of its independence and has been reshaped into spaces
characterised by labour-market activation, vocationalisation and
marketisation. These changes have often, though not always, run
contrary to the wishes of those involved in community education
creating enormous tensions for practitioners, course providers and
participants.
This is the essential English edition of the complete poems of the
eminent Japanese master of the haiku, Matsuo BashÅ. Â Matsuo
BashÅ (1644â1694) is arguably the greatest figure in the history
of Japanese literature and the master of the haiku. BashÅ: The
Complete Haiku of Matsuo BashŠoffers in English a full
picture of the haiku of BashÅ, 980 poems in all. Andrew
Fitzsimonsâ translation is the first to adhere strictly to form:
all of the poems are translated following the syllabic count of the
originals. This book also translates a number of BashÅâs
headnotes to poems ignored by previous English-language
translators. Â In Fitzsimonsâ beautiful rendering, BashÅ
is much more than a philosopher of the natural world and the
leading exponent of a refined Japanese sensibility. He is also a
poet of queer love and eroticism; of the city as well as the
country, the indoors and the outdoors, travel and staying put; of
lonesomeness as well as the desire to be alone. His poetry explores
the full range of social experience in Edo Japan as he moved among
friends and followers high and low, the elite and the demi-monde,
the less fortunate: poor farmers, abandoned children, disregarded
elders. BashÅ: The Complete Haiku of Matsuo BashÅ reveals how
this work speaks to our concerns today as much as it captures a
Japan emerging from the Middle Ages. For dedicated scholars and
those coming upon BashÅ for the first time, Fitzsimonsâ elegant
translationâwith an insightful introduction and helpful
notesâallows readers to enjoy these works in all their glory.
Â
This is the biography of a pioneer aeronaut, Charles Henry Brown,
whose life-long obsession with aerostation took him from his native
Great Britain to Australia and India. The story of his quest for
recognition is deeply researched, while being told in an
anti-generic mode - imagined dialogue, play scripts and speculative
interventions. To date Brown's story has not been told in any great
detail, and in the few instances where his achievements have been
noted the records are marred by inaccuracies. While the story is
prima facie an historical biography it also highlights the travail
and frustrations faced by the early aviation pioneers - in an age
of innovation and advancement they were viewed by many in the
scientific community, and the general public, as being no more than
providers of novelty entertainment. Brown never accepted this role
and had a greater vision of the future of aviation. Brown's story
also reflects the many interesting, and to us, peculiar aspects of
contemporary Victorian society.
This title was first published in 2002. Aiming to contribute to
feminist theory in the area of paid employment, this volume
demonstrates how the meanings attached to gender can form part of
the explanation for the persistence of gender segregation at work.
The author applies the Foucaultian concept of discourse to
occupational segregation to offer a new approach to the study of
gender segregation. An analysis is provided of gender in relation
to computer programming.
In this work the author traces his researches with Grotowski and
Strasberg, at the Old Vic in London, and in Nahuatlan and Tibetan
theatre to arrive at his design for a unique participatory theatre
form. The text also provides a practical guide to the author's
ritual/theatrical "actions" as well as supplying a philosophical
context for this work.
