The short stories vary in size from one page to thirty pages as the reader is taken on rides of the author's imagination. Brought back to face reality through the Author's Notes, and quotes from the Bible, Savage's goal is to force the reader to desire to learn the truth as taught in the Bible as opposed to the many untruths taught in a world of unbelievers where Christians are viewed as weirdos.
Setting out to correct the inadequacies of many written accounts of slavery, teacher and social activist Octavia Albert added her own incisive commentary to the personal narratives of former slaves. Her early interviews, like many antebellum slave narratives, depict cruel punishments, divided families, and debilitating labour. The Schomburg Library of Nineteenth-Century Black Women Writers General Editor: HENRY LOUIS GATES, JR.
