The highly anticipated sequel to Red Queen. 'Best thriller books of
2023 . . . What impresses is the brainy brio of Gómez-Jurado's
storytelling' - Sunday Times on Red Queen Antonia Scott has an
unusually gifted mind, able to see what others miss, able to solve
the crimes that baffle all others. The only thing she fears is
herself. Antonia is the lynchpin of the Red Queen project, created
to work behind the scenes to solve the most devious and dangerous
crimes. But she is unwilling to move past the last case, convinced
it’s related to a personal tragedy, until a series of deadly
events pulls her back in. In southern Spain, in the Costa del Sol,
a key mafia figure is found brutally murdered in his villa, his
pregnant wife, Lola Moreno, barely escapes an attempt to kill her
in a shopping mall and is on the run. A shipping container from St.
Petersburg arrives in port in Spain containing the corpses of nine
women, all who suffocated. Now Antonia, with the help of her helper
and protector, Jon Gutierrez, must track down this missing Lola.
But they aren’t the only ones on Lola’s trail – a dangerous
contract killer, known as the Black Wolf, is also on her trail. And
Antonia Scott, still plagued by her personal demons, must outwit,
out-maneuver, and, ultimately, face this terrible, mysterious
rival. The Black Wolf is getting closer and closer, and Antonia,
for the first time in her life, is feeling scared. 'An electrifying
serial-killer thriller . . . tops even The Girl with the Dragon
Tattoo as a thinking reader’s thriller, and Antonia Scott is like
a more sympathetic Lisbeth Salander' A.J. Finn, bestselling author

Pitter-patter, splutter-splatter, drizzle turns to roar. . . .
DOWNPOUR! But where do all those raindrops go? Dirty stormwater
runoff can cause big problems, polluting rivers, ponds, and
waterways. So this classroom plans and builds a rain garden,
collecting excess water in barrels, creating paths for waterflow
with stones and bricks, and planting native flowers and grasses
that help the water percolate and invite wildlife to feed and
pollinate. With Michelle Schaub’s lively, engaging storytelling,
and Blanca Gómez’s bright, beguiling illustrations, A Place for
Rain provides an upbeat and actionable approach to an important
environmental issue, and empowers readers with the tools to reduce
pollution, diminish flooding, and create a habitat for wildlife.
Informational backmatter includes instructions and resources for
readers to build their own rain garden.

What is it like to live in or visit Mexico? What makes Mexico's

of Mexican people.
This book seeks to address US public diplomacy strategies in Latin
America, of particular importance during the 1960s when the
leadership of the United States had been questioned after the Cuban
revolution. The implicit mandate was "No more Cubas" so that what
happened in the Caribbean country would not spread to other
countries. The actions of the United States towards its southern
neighbors in the first half of the twentieth century are quite well
known. In contrast, Latin American scenarios of the Cultural Cold
War have remained relatively less well known. The contributors and
editors of this volume examine various facets and means of action
used by the "U.S. machinery of persuasion" with the aim of
disseminating the virtues of its socioeconomic and political model,
including both public and private efforts, and the significance of
nonstate actors. Subjects examined include the impact of the theory
of modernization, anti-Americanism, the deployment of public
diplomacy in the region, the activities of the Congress for
Cultural Freedom and the Rockefeller Foundation, and the influence
of these efforts on sporting, artistic, and musical events. This
volume will be value to students and scholars alike interested in
Latin American history and history of the Americas.
This book presents a simple yet elegant introduction to classical
optics focused primarily on establishing fundamental concepts for
students new to the field. With examples demonstrating the use of
optics in a wide range of practical applications, it reflects the
pedagogical approach used by Prof. Mejía-Barbosa to teach his
Fundamentals of Optics course at the Universidad Nacional de
Colombia. This book will prove useful for undergraduate and
graduate students of physics, optical science and engineering, and
any other related science or engineering discipline that deals with
optics at some level. Readers are invited to study the fundamental
principles of optics and find pleasure in learning about this
fascinating and vibrant field.
This collection explores the relationships between acts of
translation and the movement of peoples across linguistic,
cultural, and physical borders, centering the voices of migrant
writers and translators in literatures and language cultures of the
Global South. To offer a counterpoint to existing scholarship, this
book examines translation practices as forms of both home-building
and un-homing for communities in migration. Drawing on scholarship
from translation studies as well as eco-criticism, decolonial
thought, and queer theory, the book’s three sections critically
reflect on different dimensions of the intersection of translation
and migration in a diverse range of literary genres and media. The
first part looks at self-translation, collaboration, and
co-creation as modes of expression born out of displacement and
exile. The second section considers radical strategies of literary
translation and the threats and opportunities they bring in
situations of detention and border policing. The final part looks
ahead to the ways in which translation can act as a powerful means
of fostering responsibility, solidarity, and community in building
an inclusive, multilingual public sphere even in the face of
climate crisis. This dynamic volume will be of particular interest
to students and scholars in translation studies, migration and
mobility studies, postcolonial studies, and comparative literature.

This book addresses heated issues in Integrated Content and
Language in Higher Education (ICLHE) teacher training with specific
emphasis on case studies that will contribute to inform future
ICLHE teacher training research and practice. One of the most
significant phenomena concerning language in higher education in
modern time has been the rise of content subjects taught in an
additional language, English being the chosen language in most of
the cases. The implementation and teaching of Integrated Content
and Language in Higher Education (ICLHE) or English as Medium of
Instruction (EMI) is a multifaceted, dynamic process that cannot be
considered in isolation. Indeed, there are a multitude of
interrelated factors that pivot on situating the learner in the
centre of the learning process and which directly shape ICLHE
teacher training. This is why training lecturers to teach learners
in an additional language in Higher Education has been considered a
challenge for the profession as numerous publications demonstrate.
This book brings together the innovative work of different
researchers around the world on how universities, researchers and
practitioners are facing and developing Integrating Content and
Language in Higher Education (ICHLE) teacher training. All in all,
the different contributions reflect different issues that play a
fundamental role in the design of effective ICLHE professional
development and provide data and reflections that will hopefully
contribute to inform future ICLHE teacher training programmes.
Teacher Professional Development for the Integration of Content and
Language in Higher Education will be an important resource for
academics, researchers, and advanced students of Education and
Teacher Training Research and Practice. The chapters included in
this book were originally published as a special issue of
Innovation in Language Learning and Teaching.
Popular Music in Spanish Cinema analyses the aesthetics and
stylistic development of soundtracks from national productions,
considering how political instability and cultural diversity in
Spain determined the ways of making art and managing culture. As a
pioneering study in this field, the chronologically structured
approach of this book provides readers with a complete overview of
Spanish music and connects it to the complex historical events that
conditioned Spanish culture throughout the 20th century to the
present day, from the Second Republic, the Spanish Civil war, and
the dictatorship through to democracy. The book enables an
understanding of the relationships between the recording and film
production industries, the construction of collective imagination,
the formulation of new stereotypes, semiotic meanings within film
music and the musical exchanges between national and international
cinema. This volume is an essential read for students and academics
in the field of musicology, ethnomusicology and history as well as
those interested in the study of diverse musical styles such as
copla, zarzuela, flamenco, jazz, foxtrot, pop and rock and how they
have been used in Spanish films throughout history.

While much focus has been placed on Black Lives Matter activism in
response to police and civilian murders of Black men and women, the
contributors argue that Black activism in this era has addressed a
broader range of issues in a wide array of settings, both on the
street and inside institutions and communities. This Era of Black
Activism includes chapters on this era of Black activism from
2000-2022. It describes how previous activism has influenced this
generation, while showing innovations in political approaches,
leadership and organizational formations, and the use of social and
other media for movement purposes. Topics include the innovations
of #BlackLives Matter as a movement; the Florida activist group
Dream Defenders; policing and discrepancies in reporting on
Ferguson; the role of citizen cameras in Black activism; social
media for Black community coping and well-being; BIPOC Gay Power
activism vs. Gay Pride; academic activism by Black and White
professors; corporate responses to #BLM; #MeToo and healing within
the Black community; Black health activism and the Covid pandemic;
and bridging activism and policy for a new social contract. It also
offers an additional bibliography on Black activism for
environmental justice, athlete anti-racist activism, and the role
of the Black Church in this era.
Drawing on the work of contributors from a variety provinces,
institutions, and disciplines, Social and Solidarity Economy in
Cuba examines the role of Social and Solidarity Economics (SSE)
amidst national change in Cuba. The contributors examine a variety
of topics, including public–private relations, production chains,
gender roles, vulnerable groups, social participation, social
balance, and the training of stakeholders. Depicting both
challenges and opportunities, this book makes a strong and
sustained case for solidary and socially responsible practices in
Cuba.
The book presents various investigation into 20th century European
dictatorships, with its focus on Franco`s dictatorship and the
Spanish Civil War. Francisco Franco’s dictatorship in Spain
(1936/39-1975/78) was a modern form of authoritarianism, with a
strong totalitarian period, like many other dictatorships of the
time. Francoism occupies a place in history alongside other
different dictatorships of its age, and a comparative analysis
might prove to be a powerful tool in order to understand how, in
the middle of the 20th century, such a repressive and authoritarian
form of political control emerged. One of the most forgotten
fascisms, which at the same time was influenced by and influenced
other dictatorships, there are many aspects of the transnational
connections of Francoism that remain under-researched. Following
this methodology, Thus, an attempt is made to situate Francoism in
the context of the other dictatorships of the time, in an attempt
to transcend explanations centered on the nation. The chapters
cover groundbreaking topics such as the Spanish civil war as one of
the first total wars or Spanish fascism in context as one of the
main European totalitarianisms. The chapters always have more than
one dimension: they speak of interrelation, entanglement,
collaboration, diffusion, in general, put the different
dictatorships (essentially: Francoism, diverse Fascisms and
Communism) in context and comparison.

This book provides a theoretical framework for empirically
examining the impact of violence on marginalized peoples across the
lifespan. With anti-Black racism uniquely impacting Black
women and girls who are sexually victimized, a unifying,
empirically testable framework with a critical race perspective to
examine Black women and girls' experiences of sexual violence is
warranted. Dr. Jennifer M. Gómez created cultural betrayal
trauma theory (CBTT) to expand the limiting assumption in the
dominant theoretical and methodological literature on the impact of
violence that traumas, such as rape, are solely interpersonal. In
CBTT, Dr. Gómez builds on Black feminist scholarship, ethnic
minority trauma psychology, and betrayal trauma theory to provide a
theoretical framework for examining the impact of violence on
marginalized peoples across the lifespan. The Cultural Betrayal of
Black Women and Girls is the first book to use the CBTT research to
contribute to academic and national discussions regarding
anti-Black racism and sexual abuse. Using CBTT as a foundation,
this book incorporates transdisciplinary scholarship on racism,
intersectional oppression and intersectionality, sexual abuse
against Black women and girls, cultural competency and critical
consciousness in therapy, and healing in the community into a
single resource for understanding and addressing oppression and
sexual abuse on individual, institutional, and societal levels.

In 2017, less than three weeks after Salvador Gómez-Colón’s
fifteenth birthday, Puerto Rico was struck by a historic Category 4
hurricane. Residents were completely caught in the dark; news about
Hurricane Maria broke only two days before it made landfall.
Salvador and his family fared better than most, but many in his
community were left with destroyed homes and little access to basic
resources. Unable to ignore this suffering, Salvador put his good
fortune to good use, starting a fund-raising campaign that would
bring solar-powered lamps and hand-powered washing machines to
thousands of families in need. This Spanish-language edition of
Salvador’s propulsive first-person narrative brings a compelling
story of determination, compassion, and hope to a wider audience.
