From 1807, when the first Protestant missionary arrived in China,
to the 1920s, when a new phase of growth began, thousands of
missionaries and Chinese Christians laboured, often under very
adverse conditions, to lay the groundwork for a solid, healthy, and
self-sustaining Chinese church. Following an Introduction that sets
the scene and surveys the entire period, 'Builders of the Chinese
Church' contains the stories of nine leading pioneers: seven
Western missionaries and two Chinese. Here we meet Robert Morrison,
the heroic translator; Liang Fa, the first Chinese evangelist;
missionary-scholar James Legge; J. Hudson Taylor, founder of the
China Inland Mission; converted opium addict Pastor Hsi, Overcomer
of Demons; Griffith John and Jonathan Goforth, both indefatigable
preachers; and the idealistic advocates of education and reform,
W.A.P. Martin and Timothy Richard. Readers will be inspired by
their courage, devotion, and sheer perseverance in arduous work,
and will gain a better understanding of the origins of the two
'branches' of today's Chinese Protestantism.
Christ the King unfolds the many ways in which the Gospel of
Matthew presents Jesus as not only King of the Jews, but the one to
whom all authority in heaven and earth has been given. Brief
meditations on virtually every verse in Matthew portray Jesus as
both God and man, and as teacher, healer, and liberator from
demons, sin, and death. Drawing almost entirely on Matthew s Gospel
for his interpretation of each passage, the author also shows how
Christ calls His people to follow Him faithfully, regardless of the
cost. Christ the King is ideal for personal enrichment or group
study.
About the Contributor(s): G. Wright Doyle is Director of Global
China Center and English editor of the Biographical Dictionary of
Chinese Christianity (www.bdcconline.net). He is author of
Christianity in America: Triumph and Tragedy (2013); Reaching
Chinese Worldwide (2013); Christ the King: Meditations on Matthew
(2011); Carl Henry: Theologian for All Seasons (2010); and coauthor
of China: Ancient Culture, Modern Society (2009).
Reaching Chinese Worldwide introduces the many ways in which
Christians may communicate the truth and love of God in Christ to
Chinese around the world. Drawing upon four decades of reading and
experience, the author first lays a biblical foundation for
cross-cultural witness, then briefly explores the various facets of
ministry among Chinese: Preparation, Presence, Proclamation, Points
of Contact, "Perfection" of Believers, Participation in the Body of
Christ, Performance of Good Works, and Partnering with God. This
nearly comprehensive survey contains both fundamental principles
and practical suggestions useful for all those wanting to make a
Christian impact on China.
As the authors point out, China has arrived, big time. To ignore
the Chinese is foolish. Yet, where does one begin? Getting a handle
on China, with its sweeping history and vast cultural diversity,
is, for most, a daunting task. China: Ancient Culture, Modern
Society provides a much-needed starting point for piecing together
the many parts of the complex puzzle that is China. More than
simply a guidebook or historical survey, this rich volume bridges
geography, culture, politics, and beliefs to present a nuanced
picture of a nation that is often misunderstood by those seeking to
view it through a Western lens. Whether one is approaching China
for the first time or seeking to fill the gaps in one's existing
understanding of things Chinese, this book provides an abundance of
useful information. - Brent Fulton, Ph.D., Director, ChinaSource

In search of the "ideal" man. What does it mean to be a real man?
One who can command both respect and affection. A man who
accomplishes worthy goals without ruining others or losing his
soul. We see too many "macho" types who swagger through life with
bravado, but with hollow hearts and confused minds. Others are kind
and sensitive, but lack the strength to lead with purpose and
passion. Far too many men are obsessed with their work, their play,
or their pleasures. Meanwhile, the women around them long for
someone who is caring, confident, and competent. Where can we find
a man who has it all, a well-rounded man who combines all the
qualities we look for in a leader and a lover? JESUS: The Complete
Man presents us with such a model. For almost two thousand years,
Jesus' influence has spread around the world. In almost every
country, men and women acknowledge him not only as the perfect
pattern of human goodness but also as the only savior from sin and
death.
