Fission track dating is based on the microscopic observation and counting of etchable tracks left by the spontaneous fission of uranium in minerals. Since its development in 1963 the method attracted a steadily growing interest from geologists and geochronologists throughout the world. Apart from its relative experimental ease the success must be mainly ascribed to the specific ability of the method of unravelling the thermal and tectonic history of rocks, a potential which only became fully exploited during the last decade with the systematic introduction of track size analysis. The present work is the first one to deal entirely with fission track dating covering all of its aspects from the origin of the fission tracks, the basis of track etching and fading, the various dating techniques as well as practical procedures and the geologic interpretation to the most recent applications in geology and archaeology.

In the initial part of Phase III, myocardial infarct (MI) size limitation was attempted by reducing myocardial metabolic demands via either beta adrenergic or calcium channel blocking agents. We are currently several years into the second part of Phase III of coronary care where the principle means of limiting MI size is restoration of coronary blood flow.

Pain is unfortunately not an early symptom in neoplastic diseases. When it occurs, however, as it so often does in the advanced stages of the disease, then it can be particularly severe. Many physicians are not able to treat such pain efficiently with the standard methods familiar to them. Even in the oncological clinic, it is common for cancer patients not to receive adequate treatment of their pain; the therapeutic efforts are directed principally at the cancer, the pain often being neglected. This book fills a gap in the literature and should enhance the awareness of pain of all those who deal with cancer patients. For the patient, the symptoms of the disease are usually the direct cause of suffering, and pain is often the most severe symptom. The pain may be potentiated by knowledge of the threat posed by the cancer, or may itself considerably increase the patients existing anxiety. Thus there is a vicious circle of pain and psychological factors which will reduce the patient to a state of despair and distress. It is, therefore, obvious that efficient pain therapy is of utmost signi ficance to the patient, who will judge the doctor's ability to provide medical assistance according to the degree of pain relief achieved. SALUTIS UNITAS, Unity for Health, an organization 'Uniting physicians of the world to foster better health for all people through international exchange of technological information', was officially founded in 1972 after preceding years of preparation. One of its main objectives is the scientific communication, be it by meeting or by publications. So several scientific meetings could be held, mostly together with other scientific organizations, and resulted in the publication of the respective proceedinqs 1. Studies were commissioned 2 to investigate trends in health care delivery and their socio-economic consequences, which also provided the basis for further investigations 3. So also in 1978 an international congress was organized by SALUTIS UNITAS and sponsored by the international Menarini Foundation under its directorship of Dr. Gorini. This volume is based on the contributions of SALUTIS UNITAS mewbers of this meeting 'Man and his World, Technology and Health', supplemented by further studies and materials. The main objective was to look at various recipients of health care delivery: the individual, the community, the region and the nation.
