Performance Theories in Education - Power, Pedagogy, and the Politics of Identity (Hardcover): Bryant Keith Alexander, Gary L.... Performance Theories in Education - Power, Pedagogy, and the Politics of Identity (Hardcover)
Bryant Keith Alexander, Gary L. Anderson, Bernardo Gallegos
R3,896 Discovery Miles 38 960 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Performance Theories in Education: Power, Pedagogy, and the Politics of Identity breaks new ground by presenting a range of approaches to understanding the role, function, impact, and presence of performance in education. It is a definitive contribution to a beginning dialogue on how performance, as a theoretical and pragmatic lens, can be used to view the processes, procedures, and politics of education. The conceptual framework of the volume is the editors' argument that performance and performativity help to locate and describe repetitive actions plotted within grids of power relationships and social norms that comprise the context of education and schooling. The book brings together performance studies and education researchers, teachers, and scholars to investigate such topics as: *the relationship between performance and performativity in pedagogical practice; *the nature and impact of performing identities in varying contexts; *cultural and community configurations that fall under the umbrella of teaching, education, and schooling; and *the hot button issues of educational policies and reform as performances. With the aim of developing a clearer understanding of the effect, affect, and role of performance in education, the volume provides a crucial starting point for discourse among theorists and teacher practitioners who are interested in understanding and acknowledging the politics of performance and the practices of performative social identities that always and already intervene in the educational endeavor.

Advocacy Leadership - Toward a Post-Reform Agenda in Education (Hardcover): Gary L. Anderson Advocacy Leadership - Toward a Post-Reform Agenda in Education (Hardcover)
Gary L. Anderson
R4,448 Discovery Miles 44 480 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In this timely and important new book, Gary Anderson provides a devastating critique of why a managerial role for educational leaders is counterproductive, especially for improving opportunities for low-income students and students of color, and instead proposes ways of re-theorizing educational leadership to emphasize its advocacy role. Advocacy Leadership lays out a post-reform agenda that moves beyond the neo-liberal, competition framework to define a new accountability, a new pedagogy, and a new leadership role definition. Drawing on personal narrative, discourse analysis, and interdisciplinary scholarship, Anderson delivers a compelling argument for the need to move away from current inauthentic and inequitable approaches to school reform in order to jump-start a conversation about an alternative vision of education today.

The Action Research Dissertation - A Guide for Students and Faculty (Paperback, 2nd Revised edition): Kathryn G. Herr, Gary L.... The Action Research Dissertation - A Guide for Students and Faculty (Paperback, 2nd Revised edition)
Kathryn G. Herr, Gary L. Anderson
R2,496 Discovery Miles 24 960 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The first edition of this book was a first-of-its-kind reference, distilling the authors' decades of action research experience into a handy guide for graduate students. The Second Edition continues to provide an accessible roadmap that honors the complexity of action research, while providing an overview of how action research is defined, its traditions and history, and the rationale for using it. The authors demonstrate that action research is not only appropriate for a dissertation, but also is a deeply rewarding experience for both the researcher and participants. This practical book demonstrates how action research dissertations are different from more traditional dissertations and prepares students and their committees for the unique dilemmas they may face, such as validity, positionality, design, write-up, ethics, and dissertation defense.

Sonya Douglass Horsford, Janelle T. Scott, Gary L. Anderson
R1,107 Discovery Miles 11 070 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In a context of increased politicization led by state and federal policymakers, corporate reformers, and for-profit educational organizations, The Politics of Education Policy in an Era of Inequality explores a new vision for leading schools grounded in culturally relevant advocacy and social justice theories. This timely volume tackles the origins and implications of growing accountability for educational leaders and reconsiders the role that educational leaders should and can play in education policy and political processes. This book provides a critical perspective and analysis of today's education policy landscape and leadership practice; explores the challenges and opportunities associated with teaching in and leading schools; and examines the structural, political, and cultural interactions among school principals, district leaders, and state and federal policy actors. An important resource for practicing and aspiring leaders, The Politics of Education Policy in an Era of Inequality shares a theoretical framework and strategies for building bridges between education researchers, practitioners, and policymakers.

Gary L. Anderson, Martha Montero
R2,548 Discovery Miles 25 480 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Juan Carlos Tedesco, a prominent Argentinean sociologist argues that qualitative studies of education in Latin America represent a major challenge to current research. Latin American qualitative researchers are producing interpretive studies that focus on the realities of current developmental and educational reforms. Indigenous communities, women, students, and teachers are given voice in these studies, which represent the state of Latin American ethnographic, qualitative, and participatory research.
This is the first book in English to offer a state-of-the-art collection of educational qualitative research studies in Latin America. The first three chapters present an overview of qualitative research, while the remaining seven chapters provide studies that explore various aspects of education from public schools to informal educational programs.

An Interactive Tool for Refining Software Specifications from a Formal Domain Model (Paperback): Gary L. Anderson An Interactive Tool for Refining Software Specifications from a Formal Domain Model (Paperback)
Gary L. Anderson
R1,349 Discovery Miles 13 490 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This work examines the process for refining a software specification from a formal object-oriented domain model. This process was implemented with interactive software to demonstrate the feasibility and benefits of automating what has been a tedious and often error-prone manual task. The refinement process operates within the framework of a larger Knowledge-Based Software Engineering system. A generic object-oriented representation is used to store a domain model, which allows the specification tool to access, select, and manipulate the required objects to form a customized specification. The specification is also stored as an object-oriented model, which in turn can be accessed by a design tool to transform the specification into source code. The tool has been designed as an interactive program that helps guide the user through the process of building the specification. The tool has been named the Elicitor-Harvester because of the functions it performs. It elicits application requirements from the user and harvests pre-existing knowledge from the formal domain.
